The increasing awareness of the general society toward the seismic safety of structures has led to more restrictive performance requirements hence, many times, to the need of using new and more accurate methods of analysis of structures. Among these, nonlinear static procedures are becoming, evermore, the preferred choice of the majority of design codes, as an alternative to complete nonlinear time-history analysis for seismic design and assessment of structures. The many available software tools should therefore be evaluated and well understood, in order to be easily and soundly employed by the practitioners. The study presented herein intends to contribute to this need by providing further insight with respect to the use of commonly employed structural analysis software tools in nonlinear analysis of bridge structures. A comparison between different nonlinear modeling assumptions is presented, together with the comparison with real experimental results. Furthermore, alternative adaptive pushover procedures are proposed and applied to a case study bridge, based on a generic plastic hinge model. The adopted structural analysis program proved to be accurate, yielding reliable estimates, both in terms of local plastic hinge behavior and global structural behavior.

In this paper,we address the long-term generation and transmission expansion planning for power systems of regions with very high solar *** target the power systems that currently rely mainly on thermal generators and that aim to adopt high shares of renewable *** propose a stochastic programming model with expansion alternatives including transmission lines,solar power plants(photovoltaic and concentrated solar),wind farms,energy storage,and flexible combined cycle gas *** model represents the longterm uncertainty to characterize the demand growth,and the short-term uncertainty to characterize daily solar,wind,and demand *** use the Saudi Arabian power system to illustrate the functioning of the proposed model for several cases with different renewable integration *** results show that a strong dependence on solar power for high shares of renewable sources requires high generation capacity and storage to meet the night demand.

The servo motor’s flexible acceleration/deceleration(acc/dec) control is an emerging research topic in the automation field. A velocity control algorithm based on trigonometric function is proposed in this *** required parameters, it transforms trigonometric calculations into elementary mathematical operations and calculates the velocity controlling values iteratively, which could avoid trigonometric calculation and reduce the computation time. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is suitable for implementation on field programmable gate arrays and achieves a flexible controlling, enhancing both the equipment’s stability and reliability. It is promising to significantly improve the high-speed computerized numerical control equipment’s controlling accuracy, without a huge hardware resource consumption.

The"Crime of Flores Street"is one of the most famous cases of poisoning to divide public opinion in Portugal in the late 19th century, and it also demonstrated the weaknesses of the Portuguese medicolegal system and attested to the importance of toxicological analysis. Vicente Urbino de Freitas was a prominent doctor, graduating from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra in 1875. He later became Professor of Physiology at the Porto Medical-Surgical School and author of a number of books on leprosy. In 1877, he married Maria das Dores Basto Sampaio Freitas, and this was followed by the death of a number of her close relatives in suspicious circumstances, notably her brother José António Sampaio Junior and nephew Mário guilherme Augusto de Sampaio. This review aims to retell the story of Portugal's first significant medicolegal case as well as the accompanying judicial drama that gave birth to Forensic Toxicology in Portugal and prompted the medicolegal organization that exists today. This research was carried out over a 10-year period and repre-sents undeniable historical value given the rarity of the facts compiled. At the heart of this forensic case was the use of toxicological analyses in court for which the Chemist Antònio Joaquim Ferreira da Silva played a key role. This toxicological report revealed high concen-trations of morphine, delphinine and narceine in viscera and in Mario's urine. The Mario's cause of death was attributed to poisoning by opium alkaloids. Despite the strong judicial evidence, doubts still remains as to whether Vicente Urbino de Freitas was a"monster"or a victim of circumstances and a hapless martyr.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most frequent primary liver cancer and presents together with cirrhosis in most *** addition to commonly recognized risk factors for HCC development,such as hepatitis B virus/hepatitis C virus infection,age and alcohol/tobacco consumption,there are nutritional risk factors also related to HCC development including high intake of saturated fats derived from red meat,type of cooking(generation of heterocyclic amines)and contamination of foods with *** the contrary,protective nutritional factors include diets rich in fiber,fruits and vegetables,n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and *** the patient is being evaluated for staging and treatment of HCC,special attention should be paid to nutritional support,including proper nutritional assessment and therapy by a multidisciplinary *** must be considered that these patients usually develop HCC on top of long-lasting cirrhosis,and therefore they could present with severe *** complications should be properly addressed and considered for nutritional *** addition to traditional methods,functional testing,phase angle and computed tomography scan derived skeletal muscle index-L3 are among the most useful tools for nutritional *** therapy should be centered on providing enough energy and protein to manage the increased requirements of both cirrhosis and *** with branched-chain amino acids is also recommended as it improves response to treatment,nutritional status and survival,and finally physical exercise must be encouraged and adapted to individual needs.

AIM To evaluate the efficacy of peripheral blood concentrations of angiopoietins(Ang) as cirrhosis biomarkers of chronic hepatitis C(CHC).METHODS Ang1 and Ang2 serum levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELISA) in samples from 179 cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic CHC patients, classified according to the METAVIR *** were compared by non-parametric MannWhitney U test. Subsequently, the association of peripheral concentrations of angiopoietins with the stage of fibrosis was analyzed using Spearman correlation test. Finally, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of circulating angiopoietins for cirrhosis diagnosis were determined by the study of the respective area under the curve of receiver operator characteristics(AUC-ROC).RESULTS Peripheral blood concentrations of Ang1 and Ang2 in CHC patients were significantly related to fibrosis. While Ang1 was decreased in cirrhotic subjects compared to non-cirrhotic(P g2 was significantly increased as CHC progressed to the end stage of liver disease(P g2/Ang1 ratio was notably amplified and significantly correlated with fibrosis(P gly, the individual performance of each angiopoietin for the diagnosis of cirrhosis reached notable AUC-ROC values(above 0.7, both), but the Ang2/Ang1 ratio was much better(AUC-ROC = 0.810) and displayed outstanding values of sensitivity(71%), specificity(84%) and accuracy(82.1%) at the optimal cut-off(10.33). Furthermore, Ang2/Ang1 ratio improved the performance of many other previously described biomarkers or scores of liver cirrhosis in *** Ang2/Ang1 ratio might constitute a useful tool for monitoring the progression of chronic liver disease towards cirrhosis and play an important role as therapeutic target.
