Occupational and environmental exposures to industrial chemicals are well known to cause hepatotoxicity and liver injury.However,despite extensive evidence showing that exposure can lead to disease,current research approaches and regulatory policies fail to address the possibility that subtle changes caused by low level exposure to chemicals may also enhance preexisting conditions.In recent years,the conceptual understanding of the contribution of environmental chemicals to liver disease has progressed significantly.Mitochondria are often target of toxicity of environmental toxicants resulting in multisystem disorders involving different cells,tissues,and organs.Here,we review persistent maladaptive changes to mitochondria in response to environmental toxicant exposure as a mechanism of hepatotoxicity.With better understanding of the mechanism(s) and risk factors that mediate the initiation and progression of toxicant-induced liver disease,rational targeted therapy can be developed to better predict risk,as well as to treat or prevent this disease.

Objective:To investigate anti-multidrug resistance(MdR)activity and safety of the bioactive fraction(CL11)from Codiaeum luzonicum crude leaf extract.Methods:Cytotoxic activity of CL11 against MdR and nonresistant colon cancer cells was assessed using MTT assay.Mode of cell death was investigated by annexin V-propidium iodide staining,TUNEL,and JC-1 assays.To examine mechanism of action,the effect on the expression and function of the MdR-implicated protein P-glycoprotein was tested using Western blotting and calcein assay,respectively.Results:CL11 had an EC50 of 0.18,1.03 and 38.52µg/mL against HCT-15,HCT-15/dox and HCT116,respectively.Cytotoxicity was mediated by inhibition of P-glycoprotein function and expression.The mode of cell death involved mitochondrial membrane depolarization and was mostly non-apoptotic at EC50 concentrations against HCT-15 and HCT-15/dox.Conclusions:Fraction CL11 of Codiaeum luzonicum induces nonapoptotic cell death in MdR cancer cells by overcoming MdR through inhibition of P-glycoprotein expression and function.

In most countries around the globe,adolescent girls are less physically active than boys.However,the majority of studies have been conducted in high-income countries,while there is less evidence from low-and middle-income countries.1 The reasons for this gender difference in physical activity(PA)participation are poorly understood.A recently published article by Ricardo et al.2 on gender inequalities in adolescent PA from 64 global south countries seeks to close this knowledge gap.

英语是纳米比亚学校中第二教学语言,也是纳米比亚官方语言。本文探讨了导致纳米比亚卡万戈西部地区三年级学生英语阅读理解能力低下的原因。研究目标在于确定影响学生英语阅读理解能力低下的因素并提出相应的解决方案,具体而言,企在明确学生阅读理解中的困难和问题,了解不同的阅读理解方法,提高学习者的阅读技能,并提供改进建议。作者采用了描述性研究方法进行定性研究,并利用在线访谈和问卷调查收集数据,使用案例研究法和目的性抽样法选择受访者,随后对数据进行编码,并根据研究问题进行呈现、总结。研究发现,英语阅读理解课程中涉及到的一些方法包括构建心理图像、激活先验信息、总结和提问题法,学生要学会在阅读中理解内容。研究还发现,学校班级人数太多,每个班有40到50名学生,教师与学生的比例为1:40-50,这意味着教师与个别学生没有互动,也没有特别关注那些存在阅读问题的学生。而且,学校缺乏阅读材料,原因在于教育部只提供了有限数量的阅读材料。此外,小学没有图书馆,有些儿童也没有去过幼儿园。孩子们进入小学时在语言知识和技能的某些方面存在不足,诸如一般口头表达能力、在语音与语义分离时的语言处理能力、对阅读基本目的和机制的理解力以及字母熟悉度。为此,作者建议,课程开发人员和教师在设计教学时应考虑到孩子们的家庭语言(第一语言)。此外,在1-3年级,家庭或当地的语言应该作为教学语言,而英语只作为一门学科进行教学。减少读写技能不足的学龄孩子数量是提高阅读理解能力的重要一步。教育部应向每所小学提供足够的阅读材料。作者还建议缩小班级规模和师生比例,并招收上过幼儿园的学生,使教师能够与所有学生进行一对一交流。

Nitrogen enhanced drainage of CO2 rich coal seams for mining

Coal seams with high CO_2 gas contents can be difficult to drain gas for outburst management. Coal has a high affinity for CO_2 with adsorption capacities typically twice that of CH_4. This paper presents an analysis of nitrogen injection into coal to enhance drainage of high CO_2 gas contents. Core flooding experiments were conducted where nitrogen was injected into coal core samples from two Australian coal mining basins with initial CO_2 gas contents and pressures that could be encountered during underground mining. Nitrogen effectively displaced the CO_2 with mass balance analysis finding there was only approximately 6%–7% of the original CO_2 gas content residual at the end of the core flood. Using a modified version of the SIMEd II reservoir simulator, the core flooding experiments were history matched to determine the nitrogen and methane sorption times. It was found that a triple porosity model(a simple extension of the Warren and Root dual porosity model) was required to accurately describe the core flood observations. The estimated model properties were then used in reservoir simulation studies comparing enhanced drainage with conventional drainage with underground in seam boreholes. For the cases considered, underground in seam boreholes were found to provide shorter drainage lead times than enhanced drainage to meet a safe gas content for outburst management.

The proposed technique demonstrates a fiber ring resonator interrogated by an optical time domain reflectometer(OTdR),for intensity sensing.By using this methodology,a cavity round trip time of 2.85ms was obtained.For a proof of concept,a long-period grating was inserted in the resonant cavity operating as a curvature sensing device.A novel signal processing approach was outlined,regarding to the logarithmic behavior of the OTdR.Through analyzing the experimental results,an increase in the measured sensitivities was obtained by increasing applied bending.With curvatures performed from 1.8 m^(-1) to 4.5 m^(-1),the sensitivity values ranged from 2.94 dB·km^(-1) to 5.15 dB·km^(-1).In its turn,the sensitivities obtained presented a linear behavior when studied as a function of the applied curvature,following a slope of 0.86×10-3 dB.The advantages of applying this technique were also discussed,demonstrating two similar fiber rings multiplexed in a series of configurations.

Background Supporting therapies that provide stress and pain control of preterm and term newborns infants contribute positively to the neuropsychomotor development.Non-pharmacological interventions that involve manual techniques are described,considering protocols that can be reproduced by physical therapists,with positive and negative outcomes reports.data sources Systematic review follows PRISMA 2020 statements guidelines.Primary and specific health sciences databases(Science direct,Pubmed,Scielo,Embase and Scopus)were consulted between October 2021 and May 2022.Articles con-sidered were clinical trials,randomized or not,that included descriptions of the type of intervention as non-pharmacological and that studied the following outcomes:"pain"and"stress".Results Fifteen articles were selected for analysis,reaching a methodological quality of at least 3 on the Jadad Scale for the Quality of Researched Sources.The non-pharmacological therapies most applied in isolation were massage,swaddling or wrapping,gentle touch and kinesthetic stimulation,and the combined therapies were non-nutritive sucking and swad-dling,oral sucrose and swaddling,sensory stimulation and familiar odors,and sensory saturation.The outcomes found were relaxation,pain,and stress reduction after the application of painful procedures.The behavioral changes included crying,grimacing,yawning,sneezing,jerky arm or leg movements,startles,and finger flaring.The vital signs included heart rate,blood oxygen saturation level,and pulse respiration.Conclusions Combined techniques lead to better results in controlling neonatal pain when compared to isolated techniques.They can be applied both in preterm and term infants in a safe way and are reproducible in any health unit in a simple and economical way.

BACKGROUNd Brucellosis is the most common zoonosis worldwide and is endemic in the Middle East,Africa,Asia,and Latin America.However,it is uncommon in Central Europe,and periprosthetic infections caused by Brucella are therefore rare.due to the low prevalence and nonspecific clinical presentation of the disease,accurate diagnosis can be challenging;no gold standard currently exists for treating brucellosis.CASE SUMMARY Here,we present a 68-year-old Afghan woman living in Austria with a periprosthetic knee infection caused by Brucella melitensis.The interval from total knee arthroplasty to septic loosening was five years.A profound medical history and examinations suggested that the patient had been suffering from unrecognized chronic osteoarticular brucellosis prior to total knee arthroplasty.She was successfully treated by two-stage revision surgery and combined antibiotic therapy over three months.CONCLUSION Clinicians should consider brucellosis as a possible cause of chronic arthralgia and periprosthetic infection in patients originating from countries with a high brucellosis burden.

The results of studies carried out using a computer programme simulating the coagulation of suspensions containing spherical sol particles and spherical coagulant particles are reported.The influence of the degree of dispersion of the system on the coagulation reaction kinetics was investigated. The obtained results of kinetic studies were tested in the light of classical Müller–Smoluchowski equations. The influence of the physical properties of the coagulant,such as size, density and mass, on the coagulation rate was tested. It was found that within the range described in this paper, the rate of the simulated coagulation process fulfils both the kinetic equation of a first-order reaction, and the kinetic equation of a second-order reaction.Within the tested range, a significant influence of the mass and size of the coagulant on the coagulation rate was ascertained. The kinetic Müller–Smoluchowski dependence is fulfilled in a broader range of the degree of dispersion, when the coagulant particle mass and the sol particle mass are equal. When the particle mass increases with an increase in the particle radius, the coagulation rate increases faster that it would result from the Müller＇s dependence.
