Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GErD) affects an estimated 20% of the population in the United states. About 10%-15% of patients with GErD develop Barrett’s esophagus, which can progress to adenocarcinoma, currently the most prevalent type of esophageal cancer. The esophagus is normally lined by squamous mucosa, therefore, it is clear that for adenocarcinoma to develop, there must be a sequence of events that result in transformation of the normal squamous mucosa into columnar epithelium. This sequence begins with gastroesophageal reflux, and with continued injury metaplastic columnar epithelium develops. This article reviews the pathophysiology of Barrett’s esophagus and implications for its treatment. The effect of medical and surgical therapy of Barrett’s esophagus is compared.

The complexes of rare earth elements with 1,2-diphenyl-4-butyl-3,5-pyrazolidinedione （pBH, phenylbutazone） were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, Ir, UV-Vis, Epr and magnetic moment measurements. Based on these studies the complexes were formulated as [Ln（pB）3（H2O）2].nH2O, where Ln=Eu（III）, Gd（III）, Tb（III）, Dy（III） and Er（III）. From Ir spectra, it was found that pBH acted as a bidentate mono-ionic ligand coordinating through two carbonyl oxygen of the pyrazolidinedione ring. The thermal analysis of all the complexes was carried out at a heating rate of 10 oC/min. The kinetic aspects of the complexes were evaluated. The nega-tive entropy value of the complexes indicated a more ordered state for the activated complexes. The photoluminescence property of Tb（III） complex was investigated. It showed all the characteristic emission peaks of Tb^3＋ with a life time of 0.98914 ms.

In the analysis and design of important structures with relatively long life spans, there is a need to generate strong motion data for.p.s.ible large events. The source of an earthquake is characterized by the spatial distribution of slip on the fault plane. For future events, this is unknown. In this paper, a stochastic earthquake source model is developed to address this issue. Here, 1D and 2D stochastic models for slip distribution developed by Lavallée et al.(2006) are used. The random field associated with the slip distribution is heavy-tailed stable distribution which can be used for large events. Using 236 past rupture models, the spectral scaling parameter and the four stable or Levy's parameters against empirical relationship for known quantities like magnitude or fault length are developed. The model is validated with data from 411 stations of 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake. The simulated response spectrum showed good agreement to actual data. Further the pr.p.s.d model is used to generate ground motion for the 1993 Killari Earthquake where strong motion data is not available. The simulated mean peak ground velocity was in turn related to the intensity(MsK) and compared against values in the literature.

A full-scale, self-consistent, non-linear, large-signal model of double-drift hetero-structure IMpATT diode with general doping profile is derived. This newly developed model, for the first time, has been used to analyze the large-signal characteristics of hexagonal siC-based double-drift IMpATT diode. Considering the fabrication feasibility, the authors have studied the large-signal characteristics of si/siC-based hetero-structure devices. Under small-voltage modulation （~ 2%, i.e. small-signal conditions） results are in good agreement with calculations done using a linearised small-signal model. The large-signal values of the diode＇s negative conductance （5 × 106 s/m2）, susceptance （10.4 × 107 s/m2）, average breakdown voltage （207.6 V）, and power generating efficiency （15%, rF power： 25.0 W at 94 GHz） are obtained as a function of oscillation amplitude （50% of DC breakdown voltage） for a fixed average current density. The large-signal calculations exhibit power and efficiency saturation for large-signal （〉 50%） voltage modulation and thereafter decrease gradually with further increasing voltage-modulation. This generalized large-signal formulation is applicable for all types of IMpATT structures with distributed and narrow avalanche zones. The simulator is made more realistic by incorporating the space-charge effects, realistic field and temperature dependent material parameters in si and siC. The electric field snap-shots and the large-signal impedance and admittance of the diode with current excitation are expressed in closed loop form. This study will act as a guide for researchers to fabricate a high-power si/siC-based IMpATT for.p.s.ible application in high-power MM-wave communication systems.

We derive the basic canonical brackets amongst the creation and annihilation operators for a two(1 + 1)-dimensional(2D) gauge field theoretic model of an interacting Hodge theory where a U(1) gauge field(Aμ) is coupled with the fermionic Dirac fields(ψ andˉψ). In this derivation, we exploit the spin-statistics theorem, normal ordering and the strength of the underlying six infinitesimal continuous symmetries(and the concept of their generators) that are present in the theory. We do not use the definition of the canonical conjugate momenta(corresponding to the basic fields of the theory) anywhere in our whole discussion. Thus, we conjecture that our present approach provides an alternative to the canonical method of quantization for a class of gauge field theories that are physical examples of Hodge theory where the continuous symmetries(and corresponding generators) provide the physical realizations of the de rham cohomological operators of differential geometry at the algebraic level.
