Degradation of Lindane (γ-HCH) in a Mollisol as Effected by Different Soil Amendments

Soil amendments play an important role in management of pesticide residues. In this study, incubation experiment was conducted using the surface (0 - 15 cm) sample of a mollisol supplied with different soil amendments (farmyard manure, cow-dung slurry, pyrite and gypsum) to investigate the effect of amendments on the dissipation of lindane in mollisols. Dissipation of lindane in soil was studied at eight consecutive samplings (0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 d). The results indicated that soil amendments could promote the degradation of lindane in soil. After 30 d of incubation 79% degradation was observed in the untreated soil (without any amendment) whereas, in the case of farmyard manure and cow-dung slurry amended soils, 83% and 91% degradation was observed, respectively. The pyrite and gypsum amendments also enhanced the degradation of lindane in soils, but the effect was less pronounced as compared to the organic amendments. Enhanced degradation in soil treated with organic amendments could be attributed to stimulated microbial activity after the addition of organic amendments. These addition, under different soil management conditions, minimize the persistence of lindane and consequently the risk of leaching and seepage into aquifers.

Field investigations were conducted for three seasons from July 2006-2007 to test the efficacy of Fantac (N-ATCA) in transplanted rice and also determine its harvest time residues in paddy grain, straw, husk and soil by HPLC. It was applied at the rate of 25, 50, 75 and 100 mL/100 L respectively. The results revealed that foliar spray of this agrochemical on rice crop did not produce any significant effect on the general growth parameters but increased the number of grains/panicle. The residues of fantac were found to be < 0.05 μg/g at the time of harvest which are below MRL and thus Fantac can be considered as environmentally safe.

The uptake of 14C-labeled fosthiazate (0.75 mg.L–1) by tomato plants was studied in solution culture both in the presence or absence of 2, 4 dinitrophenol (DNP, 1 × 10–2 mM), a metabolic inhibitor. Fosthiazate was rapidly taken up by tomato plants and nearly one third of the finally absorbed quantity was taken up in the first half an hour. The translocation of fosthiazate to the shoot part was under metabolic control during the initial stage of uptake. The kinetics of uptake both in the presence and absence of DNP conformed well to the dual phase than a single phase. In the presence of DNP, the uptake capacity (Vmax1) for the initial phase suffered, approximately three fold reduction in comparison to the absence of DNP while Vmax2 for the latter phase was statistically similar to the value observed in the absence of DNP signifying the metabolic dependence of the initial uptake phase. Autoradiography indicated that fosthiazate in the tomato plants tends to accumulate in the roots and at the root-shoot junction. In shoot, it is accumulated in the older leaves especially, near the leaf tip and margins.

Objective:To explore correlation of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR)to severity of coronary artery disease(CAD)and in-hospital clinical outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome(ACS).Methods:In this prospective and observational study,we recruited 500 patients with *** all the eligible patients,demographic details were collected,and laboratory parameters were *** CAD severity was evaluated in terms of the number of involved *** NLR was calculated based on neutrophils and lymphocytes and the correlation of various risk factors and severity and outcome of CAD was ***:77.2%of Patients was male,and 52%of the patients aged between 55-70 *** on the type of ACS,396 out of 500 patients had ST-elevation myocardial *** ascending trend in the white blood cell levels and NLR value was noted as the severity of the ACS increased and the highest white blood cell levels and NLR was noted among classⅣ*** mean NLR value among the non-survivors were higher compared to the survivors(9.52±5.72 vs.4.76±2.36;P<0.01).Receiver operating curve showed that the cut-off NLR value was 5.76 with a sensitivity of 75.0%and a specificity of 77.3%.Conclusions:The NLR can be used as an independent prognostic marker in *** elevated NLR value serves as a reliable predictor for short-term complications,notably in-hospital mortality.

A critical first step in establishing biosphere reserves--under the Man and Biosphere Programme of UNESCO--is to generate baseline information for future courses of action. The present study aims to assess the structure and composition of forests--along with anthro- pogenic pressures mounting on these forests in the buffer zone of one such biosphere reserves--the Pachmarhi bio- sphere reserve of India. The quadrat method was employed for sampling vegetation, and information on anthropogenic pressures was collected by conducting interviews with local people and forest officials and collecting it from secondary sources. A total of 39 tree species were sampled in 82 quadrats; of these 26 tree species were in standing stage, 25 in sapling, and 35 in seedling. Chloroxylon swi- etenia emerged as the most dominant tree species having highest importance value index, followed by Tectona grandis, Terminalia tomentosa, and Hardwickia binata. Nine tree species and their saplings, including Sterculia urens and Terminalia arjuna, were exploited so badly that they were only found in the seedlings stage. The unavail- ability of standing trees of 12 important tree species including Aegle marmelos and Phyllanthus emblicaindicates the intensity and gravity of anthropogenic pres- sures on these important tree species. If the present anthropogenic pressure continues, which has inhibited the regeneration of several tree species, then substantial neg- ative ecological and societal consequences can be expected.

Eeotourism aims to deliver the philosophy of sustainable development through environmental conservation as well as socio-economic development. Areas with rich biodiversity and scenic beauty, like the Indian Himalayan region, have been one of the major destination centers for nature lovers from historical time. In view of conserving the rich biodiversity and natural heritage of the Himalayan region 92 protected areas have been set aside, of these Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve （NDBR） is a well known world heritage site. Over a period of time establishing NDBR has invited conficts between the local people and reserve authorities on the management approaches and utilization criteria of the natural resources, especially banning the traditional bio-resource collection rights of local community, expeditions, trekking, and other anthropogenic activities in the core zones. The present study aims to understand and analyze the various people - park conflicts, and also to suggest ways to mitigate such conflicts in view of biodiversity conservation and improvement of economic status of local people by promoting eeotourism. With this view the study further discusses the various aspects of eeotourism, its pros and cons, and the avenues of developing appropriate strategies for promotion of ecotourism in buffer zone areas of NDBR.

The investigated area around Sarvapuram represents a part of the Karimnagar granulite terrane of the Eastern Dharwar Craton, India. Garnet–bearing gneiss is hosted as enclaves, pods within granite gneiss and charnockite. It is largely made up of garnet, orthopyroxene, cordierite, biotite, plagioclase, K–feldspar, sillimanite and quartz. The peak metamorphic stage is represented by the equilibrium mineral assemblage i.e. garnet, orthopyroxene, cordierite, biotite, plagioclase, sillimanite and quartz. Breakdown of the garnet as well as preservation of the orthopyroxene–cordierite symplectite, formation of cordierite with the consumption of the garnet + sillimanite + quartz represents the decompressional event. The thermobarometric calculations suggest a retrograde P–T path with a substantial decompression of c. 3.0 kbar. The water activity(XH2 O) conditions obtained with the win TWQ program for core and symplectite compositions from garnet–bearing gneiss are 0.07–0.14 and 0.11–0.16 respectively. The quantitative estimation of oxygen fugacity in garnet–bearing gneiss reveal log f O2 values ranging from-11.38 to-14.05. This high oxidation state could be one of the reasons that account for the absence of graphite in these rocks.
