Disastrous Persistent Extreme Rainfall Events of the 2022 Pre-Flood Season in South China:Causes and Subseasonal Predictions

Two persistent extreme rainfall events(PEREs) with record-breaking amounts of rainfall and long duration caused disastrous impact during the 2022 pre-flood season in South China. Atmospheric intraseasonal variability played a key role in triggering and maintaining both PEREs, but its major impact on each event was associated with different modes. For the first PERE(10-15 May;PERE1), the tropical and extratropical quasi-biweekly oscillations jointly contributed to the extreme rainfall intensity. In contrast, the long duration(6-21 June) of the heavy rainfall during the second PERE(PERE2) was closely related to prolonged convection and moisture transport anomalies induced mainly by the tropical 30-90-day variability. Subseasonal-to-seasonal predictions by the model of the ECMWF showed limited skill in relation to the rainfall intensity of PERE1 and PERE2 beyond 1–2 weeks. Further assessment suggested that the fidelity of the PERE predictions was linked to model skill in predicting the phase evolution and intensity of tropical and extratropical intraseasonal variabilities. Thus, efficient monitoring and accurate prediction of the various modes of atmospheric intraseasonal variability are fundamental to reducing the hazard associated with PEREs in South China.

Cancer is a major threat to human life worldwide. Traditional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and surgery, have major limitations and can cause irreversible damage to normal tissues while killing the cancer cells. Magnesium(Mg) alloys are widely reported novel potential biomedical materials with acceptable mechanical properties and good osteogenic and angiogenic properties. In this review, we summarize the Mg alloys for antitumor applications, including pure Mg and Mg alloys(Mg-Ag, Mg-Gd, Mg-Li-Zn, Mg-Ca-Sr-Zn, et al.) fabricated by casting and extruding, selective laser melting methods. Mg alloys can exhibit antitumor effect on bone tumor, breast cancer, and liver tumor,etal. What's more, after tumor tissue is eliminated, Mg alloys prevent tumor recurrence, fill tissue defects and promote tissue *** antitumor effects of Mg alloys are mainly due to their degradation products. Overall, Mg alloys show great potential in tumor treatments due to the dual function of antitumor and tissue regeneration.

Multifocal intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas-A case report

Cystic neoplasms of the pancreas are relatively rare, comprising 10 percent of pancreatic cysts and only 1 percent of pancreatic cancers. Cystic neoplasms include mucinous cystic neoplasms, serous cystadenomas, papillary cystic tumors, cystic islet cell tumors and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas (IPMNs). IPMN was first described in 1982. It has been most commonly described in 60 to 70 years old males, and represents a relatively ''new'' but increasingly recognized disease. The improvement and widespread use of modern imaging equipments and heightened awareness of physicians contribute to the increasing incidence of IPMN. The majority of IPMNs are located in the pancreatic head (75%) while the rest involves the body/tail regions. Multifocal IPMNs have been hypothesized, but the true presence of multifocality is unknown. Here we present a 72-yearold male diagnosed with IPMN (carcinoma in situ ) in the pancreatic head and a branch duct type IPMN (duct atypia) in the pancreatic body and tail. The patient underwent a Whipple intervention and a distal pancreatectomy. A three-year disease-free survival has been observed so far.

Effective purification of oily wastewater using lignocellulosic biomass:A review

Due to the frequent occurrence of oil spills and the large-scale production of oily wastewater, the treatment of oily sewage has become an important issue for sustainable development. Recently, materials prepared from lignocellulosic biomass(LCB) for oil-water separation have been found to be effective due to their high separation efficiency, good recyclability, and superior sustainability. However, few reviews have focused on the advantages and limitations of LCB for sewage treatment. This review summarizes the performance of modified LCB in oily wastewater treatment, in terms of the advanced modification methods applied and the structural dimensions of LCB materials according to the principle of superwetting oil-water separation. Research on the preparation technologies, separation mechanisms, and treatment efficiency of different LCB materials are briefly summarized, along with the characteristics of different LCB material types for oily wastewater treatment. Finally, the future prospects and challenges faced in the development of LCB materials are discussed.

Risk factors and prediction score for chronic pancreatitis: A nationwide population-based cohort study

AIM To explore the risk factors of developing chronic pancreatitis(CP) in patients with acute pancreatitis(AP) and develop a prediction score for *** Using the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan, we obtained large, population-based data of 5971 eligible patients diagnosed with AP from 2000 to 2013. After excluding patients with obstructive pancreatitis and biliary pancreatitis and those with a follow-up period of less than 1 year, we conducted a multivariate analysis using the data of 3739 patients to identify the risk factors of CP and subsequently develop a scoring system that could predict the development of CP in patients with AP. In addition, we validated the scoring system using a validation *** Among the study subjects, 142 patients(12.98%) devel-oped CP among patients with RAP. On the other hand, only 32 patients(1.21%) developed CP among patients with only one episode of AP. The multivariate analysis revealed that the presence of recurrent AP(RAP), alcoholism, smoking habit, and age of onset of portant risk factors for CP. We developed a scoring system(risk score 1 and risk score 2) from the derivation cohort by classifying the patients into low-risk, moderate-risk, and high-risk categories based on similar magnitudes of hazard and validated the performance using another validation cohort. Using the prediction score model, the area under the curve(AUC) [95% confidence interval(CI)] in predicting the 5-year CP incidence in risk score 1(without the number of AP episodes) was 0.83(0.79, 0.87), whereas the AUC(95%CI) in risk score 2(including the number of AP episodes) was 0.84(0.80, 0.88). This result demonstrated that the risk score 2 has somewhat better prediction performance than risk score 1. However, both of them had similar performance between the derivation and validation *** In the study,we identified the risk factors of CP and developed a prediction score model for CP.

Exploring the Experiences of Personal Recovery among Mental Health Consumers and Their Caregivers Receiving Strength- Based Family Interventions

Background:This study explored the personal recovery of consumers and their caregivers receiving the strength-based family ***:A three-year project was implemented with 43 dyads from 5 community psychiatric rehabilitation agencies in northern,central,and Southern *** paper presents qualitative analysis with a focus on describing the experiences of personal *** gain a deeper understanding of the participants’personal experiences and perspectives,semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted on three occasions(six months after the inception of the experiment,18 months after,and when the participants left the services of this study).Over the three occasions,a total of 27 consumers and 28 caregivers were *** analysis was conducted based on grounded ***:Consumers expressed positive experiences in the domain of the recovery process(positive sense of self,taking responsibility,and better coping)and on the objective indicators of recovery(functioning,interpersonal interaction,and family relationship).Caregivers experienced lessened psychological *** also revealed improvements to their sense of self(recovery process)and subjective indicators of recovery outcomes,including feeling empowered and having a better quality of ***,they had better interaction with consumers(objective domain of recovery).Conclusion:These findings suggest that the strength-based perspective is an acceptable,culturally-compatible approach among Chinese mental health consumers and their *** investigators suggest that additional resources would be necessary to support a change in the service system in Taiwan so that family-based services can be provided to promote the recovery of mental health consumers and their family caregivers.
