This work deals with a non-conventional use of a drum-type electrostatic separator. Indeed, the electrostatic separation process is used as a tool to evaluate the efficiency of different formulations of insulating coatings surrounding coarse and irregular conducting mineral particles. Our analysis is based on the change of the particle’s distribution in the conductive and the non-conductive pans after the electrostatic separation process. Different coating formulations were tested and we found that only hydrophobic components have to be used and that a composite formulation must be considered to sufficiently increase the coating thickness. Viscous hydrophobic oil combined with talc is a particularly relevant coating formulation for insulating hematite or ilmenite particles. The viscosity of the binder plays a crucial role as it guarantees the necessary cohesion of the coating itself. To evaluate the required thickness to obtain efficient insulating capabilities for the coating surrounding coarse and irregular mineral particles, we linked the experimental volume ratio between the coating and the particles and the theoretical ratio. The experimental volume ratio is calculated using the weights of all the materials used and their respective densities. Whereas, the theoretical one is calculated using the volume the mineral particles would have, considering them all identical, spherical, with a smooth surface and the volume of the coating being uniform with the same thickness on each mineral particle. We found that an efficient insulating coating for hematite particles means a thickness of 9.5% of the average mineral radius, ranging from 125 μm to 1250 μm, resulting in an equivalent insulating thickness of about 48 μm for particles of around 1 mm in diameter. Interestingly, all results originate from the analysis of the change occurring in the particle’s distribution in the different collecting pans of an electrostatic separator.

This paper presents a procedure from which information contained in 3-Dimensional single energy X-ray computed tomography (XR-CT) images of sedimentary rocks is converted into sub-mm scale resolution core scalar and core image logs. This new data provide a quantitative and compact (data volume reduction of ~90%) description of the XR-CT images. Density-related outputs are calibrated through automatic integration with continuous digital visual core description (VCD) and discrete moisture and density (mAD) property index measurements of selected samples. After lithology-based calibration of the X-ray attenuation coefficients into density values, quantitative displays include: 1) histogram of the distribution of density values and its related statistical parameters, 2) radial and angular distributions of core density values, 3) volume, average density and mass contributions of three core fractions defined by density thresholds corresponding to voids or vugs (VV, density ≤ ~1 g•cm−3), and a break in the histogram of distribution of the density values showing the limit between the damaged (Dm) and non-damaged (ND) fractions of the core material, and so, 4) providing a sub-mm scale bulk density core log free of any drilling disturbance. The procedure is illustrated on data from the 365 m deep Hole C9001C drilled off-shore Shimokita (northeast coast of Honshu, Japan). Usage of the outputs include: 1) derivation of sub-mm scale porosity core log, 2) correction of volume sensitive measurements in case of poor core quality and partially filled core liner, and 3) seismic modeling and well ties.

The Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis Pallas is considered as an invasive species in most territories where it has been introduced. Because aphid honeydew acts as an attraetant for many aphid predators and parasitoids, the objectives of this work were to collect and identify the volatile compounds released from the aphid excretory product to evaluate how these semiochemicals could affect the H. axyridis foraging behavior. Twelve volatile chemicals were identified from the megoura viciae Buckton honeydew including four alcohols, three ketones, three aldehydes, a pyrazine and a monoterpene. The volatiles 3-methyl-l-butanol and 3-methyl-butanal were highlighted as the two most abundant semiochemicals released from the m. viciae honeydew. Vieia faba L. plants treated with crude honeydew attracted more than 80% of the tested individuals with 40% of attracted beetles located on the plant. Four volatile compounds （3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 3-methyl-butanal, 3-methyl-1-butanol and limonene） were also highlighted to attract more than 75% of the coccinellids toward the odor source and to locate about 35% of them on the plants. Limonene was the most efficient attractant since 89% of the H. axyridis responded to this odor. The use of the identified semiochemicals as well as the composition of an artificial honeydew could certainly be helpful to control the dispersal of the Asian lady beetle H. axyridis.

Rheumatoid arthritis(RA) is an autoimmune disease affecting 1% of the world population and is characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints sometimes accompanied by extra-articular manifestations. K/Bx N mice, originally described in 1996 as a model of polyarthritis, exhibit knee joint alterations. The aim of this study was to describe temporomandibular joint(TmJ)inflammation and damage in these mice. We used relevant imaging modalities, such as micro-magnetic resonance imaging(μmRI)and micro-computed tomography(μCT), as well as histology and immunofluorescence techniques to detect TmJ alterations in this mouse model. Histology and immunofluorescence for Col-I, Col-II, and aggrecan showed cartilage damage in the TmJ of K/Bx N animals, which was also evidenced by μCT but was less pronounced than that seen in the knee joints. μmRI observations suggested an increased volume of the upper articular cavity, an indicator of an inflammatory process. Fibroblast-like synoviocytes(FLSs)isolated from the TmJ of K/Bx N mice secreted inflammatory cytokines(IL-6 and IL-1β) and expressed degradative mediators such as matrix metalloproteinases(mmPs). K/Bx N mice represent an attractive model for describing and investigating spontaneous damage to the TmJ, a painful disorder in humans with an etiology that is still poorly understood.

Preferences of different oil palm crosses in the station of Pobè in Benin were tested on Coelaenomenodera lameensis by monitoring the natural population for 7 consecutive years. Experiments monitoring of developmental stages of the insect were performed on material types Elaeis guineensis and Elaeis oleifera. Observations were performed every two weeks on leaves of different ranks (25, 17 or 9) depending on the degree of defoliation by counting the different stages of insect development on leaflets. The results showed that the evolution of pest density is a function of species and the origin of the materials being compared. Population densities of different stages of C. lameensis were more abundant in the crosses from Yocoboué where average population indices were higher at all stages of development from early observations. By contrast, in crosses La mé, Yangambi and Deli, the numbers of larvae, pupae and adults were lower. Among these three crosses infestation was more abundant in La mé, followed by Yangambi and Deli. E. oleifera is much less or not attacked. The stages of development (larvae and adults) were also differently held in oil palm origins in comparison. The larval population is significantly important during the short rainy season and lesser important during the dry season. These results may contribute to the development of suitable materials for the genetic improvement of breeding tolerant oil palm material to leaf miner.
