Oxidized organic molecules in the tropical free troposphere over Amazonia

New particle formation(NPF) in the tropical free troposphere(FT) is a globally important source of cloud condensation nuclei, affecting cloud properties and climate. Oxidized organic molecules(OOMs)produced from biogenic volatile organic compounds are believed to contribute to aerosol formation in the tropical FT, but without direct chemical observations. We performed in situ molecular-level OOMs measurements at the Bolivian station Chacaltaya at 5240 m above sea level, on the western edge of Amazonia. For the first time, we demonstrate the presence of OOMs, mainly with 4–5 carbon atoms, in both gas-phase and particle-phase(in terms of mass contribution) measurements in tropical FT air from Amazonia. These observations, combined with air mass history analyses, indicate that the observed OOMs are linked to isoprene emitted from the rainforests hundreds of kilometers away. Based on particle-phase measurements, we find that these compounds can contribute to NPF, at least the growth of newly formed nanoparticles, in the tropical FT on a continental scale. Thus, our study is a fundamental and significant step in understanding the aerosol formation process in the tropical FT.

The technology, structures and magnetic properties of Nd4.5Fe76Co1B18.5 nanocomposite magnets were investigated. The effect of crystallizing treatment temperature and time on structures and magnetic properties of Nd4.5Fe76Co1B18.5 amorphous ribbons was studied. The results show that Nd4.5Fe76Co1B18.5 containing more analogue metals is easy to form amorphous. The magnetic properties of 16 m/s quenched ribbon for 710°C × 900 s crystallizing treatment are as follows: iHc=242.1 kA/m, Br=0.9410 T and (BH)max=59.64 kJ/m3. The even grain size is as follows: D(Fe3B)=34 nm and D (Nd2Fe14B)=23 nm.

Super-long span bridges demand high design requirements and involve many difficulties when constructed,which is an important indicator to reflect the bridge technical level of a *** the past three decades,a large percentage of the new long-span bridges around the world were built in China,and thus,abundant technological innovations and experience have been accumulated during the design and *** paper aims to review and summarize the design and construction practices of the superstructure,the substructure,and the steel deck paving of the long-span bridges during the past decades as well as the current operation status of the existing long-span bridges in China.A future perspective was given on the developing trend of high-speed railway bridge,bridge over deep-sea,health monitoring and maintenance,intellectualization,standard system,and information technology,which is expected to guide the development direction for the construction of future super long-span bridges and promote China to become a strong bridge construction country.

High-performance portable grating-based surface plasmon resonance sensor using a tunable laser at normal incidence

Surface plasmon resonance(SPr)sensors are among the most sensitive *** such devices,a grating is a compelling alternative to a prism for the excitation of a surface plasmon,especially in the development of sensors for point-of-care applications due to their compactness and ***,we demonstrate the use of a tunable laser in a grating-based SPr system for further miniaturization and *** tunable laser working at normal incidence replaces spectral and moving components,while also simplifying the optical *** incidence is conventionally avoided due to the complexity of the control of degenerated SPr *** investigate,both computationally and experimentally,the splitting of the SPr modes at small nonzero incidences,which is lacking in previously reported *** optimizing the grating configuration,we were able to diminish the SPr mode splitting phenomenon when the excitation was feasible with the normal incidence *** fabricated sensor showed a high sensitivity of 1101.6 nm/***,the figure of merit of the sensor,defined as the ratio between the sensitivity and bandwidth of the SPr dip,was *** experimental results were consistent with the simulation *** also demonstrate its capability for detecting low concentrations of glucose and creatinine with the limit of detection of 14.2 and 19.1 mmol/L,respectively.

Utility of Preoperative Positron Emission Tomography (pet) in Localizing Perforator Vessels of Anterolateral Thigh Free Flap

Objectives: The anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap is often considered the workhorse in soft tissue reconstruction of head and neck defects secondary to trauma, infection, or tumor resection. Despite its many advantages, ALT flaps have been criticized due to variability in vasculature, which may result in inadequate or non-existent perforators. This retrospective study aims to investigate the utility and validity of positron emission tomography (pet) scan to identify the location and characteristics of perforators to the ALT flap. Methods: We performed a 10-year retrospective review of ALT flaps at our institution to identify patients with preoperative pet scans available for analysis. Three reviewers (attending physician, fellow, and resident) were asked to identify the number, location, and characteristics (myocutaneous versus septocutaneous) of ALT perforators on imaging, and reviewer agreement was assessed. results were then compared to available operative data. results: One hundred twenty-one patients were identified who underwent ALT free flap surgery. Thirty-eight preoperative pet scans were identified for review. At least one perforator was identified in 92.1% of scans. Agreement percentages regarding the number of perforators ranged from 53% - 61% whereas agreement regarding the location of a single perforator ranged from 79% - 90%. However, reviewers did not agree regarding the type of perforator, with agreement ranging from 34% - 53%. Poor agreement was observed when compared to intraoperative data, with the number of perforators ranging from 26% - 34% and the type of perforator 11% - 24%. These findings are likely due to insufficient data available in operative reports. Conclusion: Although initial studies suggest that pet scan shows promising evidence to support the capacity to preoperatively identify ALT perforators, future prospective studies are warranted to fully validate these findings.

Purpose:The present work examines the associations of dietary habits,sedentarism,physical activity(PA)levels and sleep habits,with thyroid function in young euthyroid ***:A total of 105 young euthyroid adults participated in this cross-sectional *** function was determined in fasting conditions(>6 h).Dietary habits were measured by a food frequency questionnaire and three non-consecutive 24 h recalls,and different dietary intake and patterns were then *** time spent in sedentary,PA levels and sleep habits were objectively measured using a wrist-worn ***:Energy and carbohydrate intake were positively associated with thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)(β=0.222;r^(2)=0.102;P=0.022 andβ=0.425;r^(2)=0.129;P=0.007,respectively)whereas fat intake was negatively associated with TSH(β=-0.428;r^(2)=0.137;P=0.004).Energy intake was also positively associated with free triiodothyronine(β=0.277;r^(2)=0.137;P=0.004).Further,adherence to the Mediterranean diet was negatively related to TSH and free thyroxine(FT4)(β=-0.221;r^(2)=0.113;P=0.020 andβ=-0.268;r^(2)=0.071;P=0.007,respectively).Vigorous-intensity and overall PA were negatively associated with FT4(β=-0.227;r^(2)=0.052;P=0.022 andβ=-0.204;r^(2)=0.042;P=0.041,respectively).In contrast,no associations were found between sleep parameters and thyroid ***:Lifestyle factors such as dietary intake and PA levels seems to be related to thyroid function even in young euthyroid adults.

Effect of gap size and forest type on mineral nitrogen forms under different soil properties
