Response of Sorghum Accessions from Four African Countries against <i>Colletotrichum sublineolum</i>, Causal Agent of Sorghum Anthracnose

Seventy-two sorghum accessions were randomly selected from the Ethiopia, Mali, Sudan, and Uganda germplasm collections maintained by the US National Plant Germplasm System to evaluate variation in anthracnose resistance. The accessions were planted in a randomized complete block design in College Station, Texas during the 2007 and 2008 growing seasons. Twenty-six accessions exhibited a resistant response across growing seasons with 8 accessions showing a susceptible response. Twenty-nine accessions showed variation in disease response within and between experiments. Seven accessions were rated as resistant in 2007 but showed a susceptible reaction in 2008. The frequency of resistant germplasm varied based on country of origin with 80% of the accessions from Mali, 48% of the accessions from Uganda, 24% of the accessions from Sudan, and 7% of the accessions from Ethiopia exhibiting a resistance response. When the same accessions were evaluated in Isabela, Puerto Rico, 100% of the accessions from Mali, 43% of the accessions from Uganda, and 28% of the accessions from Sudan exhibited a resistant response. All the accessions from Ethiopia were susceptible to anthracnose when evaluated in Isabela, Puerto Rico. In both locations, 22 accessions exhibited a resistant response. Four accessions rated as resistant in Texas were found to be susceptible in Puerto Rico;whereas, five accessions rated as resistant in Puerto Rico showed a susceptible response in Texas. These results indicated that the Mali, Sudan, and Uganda sorghum collections may be an important source of anthracnose resistance. However, the identification of anthracnose resistant germplasm from many diverse regions could result in the identification of new sources of genetic variation for resistance. Also, greater genetic variation for resistance could be present in regions with a high frequency of resistant germplasm.

Objective:To evaluate the antimicrobial properties of tissues extracts of different nudibranchs such as Phyllidia varicosa,Plakobranchus ocellatus,Phyllidiella rosans and Halgerda stricklandi against bacterial and fungal ***:Nudibranchs tissue samples were subjected to organic solvent extraction for antimicrobial activity by well diffusion ***:The crude extract 50μL(0.2 mg)of Phyllidia varicosa showed the maximum inhibitory zone(22 mm)against Shigella *** ocellatus extract of 50μL(0.2 mg)showed the maximum inhibitory zone against Shigella flexneri(22 mm)and Staphylococcus aureus(19 mm)and no significant activity was found against the fungal ***:This work reveals that nudibranch tissues contain the antimicrobial secondary metabolites,which leads the significant activity against bacterial pathogens and further emphasizes detailed study on novel drug discovery from nudibranch tissues against certain human bacterial infections.

Objective:To investigate the antimalarial and larvicidal activities of seaweeds against Plasmodium falciparum strain andAnopheles stephensi mosquito larva. Methods: The three different seaweeds,Jania rubens,Turbinaria ornata (T. ornata) and Ulva fasciata were collected from Southeast India. The seaweeds were extracted using hexane and ethyl acetate solvents and evaluated for their mosquito-larvicidal and antiplasmodial property. The bioactive compounds of the seaweed extract were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results:The hexane extract ofT. ornata (HTO) has shown significant inhibitory effects at the IC50 value 22.98 μg/mL, when compared to the positive control, chloroquine (12.32 μg/mL). The larvicidal activity of HTO on the fourth instar larvae of Anopheles stephensi was found to be effective with the LC50 and LC90 values (μg/mL) of 1.38 and 3.34. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis ofHTO revealed the presence of alkenes, aromatics, amides and amines groups, whereas in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, 11 different bioactive components were recorded. The bioactive component, hentriacontane in the HTO might be responsible for the recorded antiplasmodial and larvicidal activities. Conclusions:The finding of the present study reveals that the constituents of T. ornata have new sources of antimalarial and larvicidal agents in future.

Analysis of Functional and Radiological Outcome of Total Hip Replacements in Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis Patients

Introduction: Outcomes of total hip arthroplasties in rheumatoid are commonly considered as poor and with high rates of complication. Keeping in mind these conflicts of opinions we are going to analyse the functional and radiological outcomes of total hip arthroplasty between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthtitis. Patients and Method: Retrospective midterm study of thirty four patients who underwent total hip replacement in Sri Ramachandra medical center for rheumatoid and osteoarthritis (primary and secondary). Of the 44 hips, the indications are rheumatoid arthritis in 20 patients and osteoarthritis in 24 patients. We used the Harris hip score (Modified) for clinical and functional evaluation and plain X-ray pelvis with both hips and proximal femur—AP view and X-ray of the operated hip lateral view for radiological evaluation. Mean follow up is 9 years (8-13 years). Results: The mean pre and latest harris hip score are 44 and 88 respectively. The mean harris hip score in 1st, 3rd and 5th years are 86, 87 and 87 respectively. The mean pre and latest harris hip score in osteoarthritis is 49 and 92, in rheumatoid arthritis is 35 and 74. Conclusion: The results in patients who underwent total hip replacement for osteoarthritis are better than those for rheumatoid arthritis, however the gain in harris hip score is the same. As far as complications are concerned there is no difference between rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Complications are mostly due to the faulty technique. Both uncemented and cemented total hip replacement give good results in non traumatic indications. In bilateral hip diseases there is considerable pain relief and improvement after the first THR, but the optimal improvement is not seen until the second replacement.

Objective:To evaluate the antimicrobial potential of partially purified leaf,bark and root extracts obtained from two mangrove species Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza from South Andaman against clinical bacterial and fungal ***:Roots,bark and leaves were dried in the shade and subjected to organic solvent *** and antifungal activities were performed by agar well diffusion *** purified extracts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography for compound ***:Results of the partially purified extracts were analyzed by column *** collected by high performance liquid chromatography exhibited a wide range of antimicrobial activities against several bacterial and fungal *** pathogen Aspergillus niger(25 mm)was found to be more sensitive against the mangrove extracts as compared with Klebsiella pneumoniae(23 mm),Escherichia coli,Shigella flexneri,Salmonella typhi(22 mm).Active fractions were identified as tannin compounds based on the peaks obtained by high performance liquid ***:Present findings reveal that mangrove bark,roots,and leaves contain valuable metabolites,which have significant importance in the pharmacological ***,this study suggests that these two mangrove plants Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza are potential candidates for discovering antimicrobial compounds against clinical pathogens.

We analyzed the radiolarian assemblages (pelagic sediments) and geochemical studies of 15 samples collected from Meluri district Nagaland, Naga Hills Ophiolite belt (NHO) and it consists of the Flysch Naga-Arakan-Yoma trough beyond the Indo-Myanmar border. It reflects one of the many components of the Himalayan Orogenic systems of Tethyan oceanic crust discovered in Nagaland at Meluri district of India and they have very well-preserved studies and can be identified to Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian-mid-Tithonian). As well as a continuous sequence of Kimmeridgian-mid-Tithonian, five radiolarian assemblages have been identified in this study. This is so far the first recovery of pelagic sediment assemblages (Radiolarians) from the Naga Hills Ophiolite complex. Samples of Naga Hills Ophiolite belts fell in the Sublitharenite, Litharenite, and Fe-shale Fe-sand area, and the A-CN-K diagram indicates that these sediments in the source region were exposed deep to moderate weathering conditions. In the discriminant plot, the Naga Hill-Ophiolite-Chert samples occupy the field of origin of the sediment quartzose, and the log (K2O/Na2O) versus SiO2 samples fall into the active continental marginal field, and only one sample falls into an island arch, suggesting that the tectonic framework of the Naga Hills-Chert samples was deposited in the active continental margin and the diagrams K2O/Al2O3 and MgO/Al2O3 illustrated the tectonic setting of the marine environment from Naga Hill Ophiolite Chert. Such findings have been consistent with the current geology of Naga Hills in the province of Nagaland.

A 25m target-aligned research heliostat with closed-loop control,with a theoretical concentration of 80 suns,has been built at CSIR in South *** heliostat has four degrees of freedom:Azimuth,Elevation,Rotation and Pitch. A control system making use of a solar tracker has been developed and tested on a 1.25m target-aligned mini- heliostat.A tracking accuracy of 3.3 milliradians was obtained.A good focal spot has been obtained with the 25m target-aligned research heliostat.

Transparent thin films of CdO has been deposited on to glass substrates employing chemical bath deposition. The prepared films are reproducible, adherent to the substrate, pinhole free and uniform. Amongst the different process parameters, the deposition time plays a significant role in obtaining device quality transparent CdO thin films. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) studies indicated that the thin films are polycrystalline in nature with cubic phase with a cell constant of a = 4.638 ?. The surface morphology of the prepared CdO thin films was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The films deposited at 24 hrs exhibited highest optical transmittivity (>80%) and the direct band gap energy was found to vary from 2.50 to 2.91 eV with a rise deposition time from 6 to 30 hrs. The electrical resitivity variations of these films were measured in the temperature range between 30?C and 150?C by four-probe technique.
