Assembly of a core–shell MOF with stability into polyacrylamide hydrogel for boosting extraction of uranium from seawater

Efficient and selective extraction of uranium(U(VI))from seawater is essential for sustainable nuclear power production.This study reports a novel adsorbent zeolitic imidazolate framework(ZIF)-67@SiO_(2)-A/polyacrylamide(PAM)which was synthesized by grafting the core–shell metal–organic frameworks(MOFs)-based nanostructures coated with the 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane(APTES)functionalized SiO_(2)(SiO_(2)-A)onto PAM hydrogel.The SiO_(2) shell was grown on the surface of MOF,which improved the acid-base resistance of MOF.The introduction of ZIF-67@SiO_(2)-A enhances the specific surface area and adsorption efficiency of the PAM.The ZIF-67@SiO_(2)-A/PAM shows remarkable adsorption capacity,fast adsorption kinetics,and good reusability for uranium.It has excellent adsorption property(6.33 mg·g^(-1),30 d)in natural seawater.The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),Fourier transform infrared(FTIR),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)mappings,and density functional theory reveal that the coordination by N and O in ZIF-67@SiO_(2)-A/PAM with uranium is the main mechanism of uranium adsorption.Thus,ZIF-67@SiO_(2)-A/PAM has great potential to capture uranium from natural seawater.

Monitoring Surface Water Change in Northeast China in 1999–2020:Evidence from Satellite Observation and Refined Classification

As a typical region with high water demand for agricultural production,understanding the spatiotemporal surface water changes in Northeast China is critical for water resources management and sustainable development.However,the long-term variation characteristics of surface water of different water body types in Northeast China remain rarely explored.This study investigated how surface water bodies of different types(e.g.,lake,reservoir,river,coastal aquaculture,marsh wetland,ephemeral water) changed during1999–2020 in Northeast China based on various remote sensing-based datasets.The results showed that surface water in Northeast China grew dramatically in the past two decades,with an equivalent area increasing from 24 394 km^(2) in 1999 to 34 595 km^(2) in 2020.The surge of ephemeral water is the primary driver of surface water expansion,which could ascribe to shifted precipitation pattern.Marsh wetlands,rivers,and reservoirs experienced a similar trend,with an approximate 20% increase at the interdecadal scale.By contrast,coastal aquacultures and natural lakes remain relatively stable.This study is expected to provide a more comprehensive investigation of the surface water variability in Northeast China and has important practical significance for the scientific management of different types of surface water.

Bacillus anthracis lethal toxin(LT)is a determinant of lethal anthrax.Its function in myeloid cells is required for bacterial dissemination,and LT itself can directly trigger dysfunction of the cardiovascular system.The interplay between LT and the host responses is important in the pathogenesis,but our knowledge on this interplay remains limited.Tumor necrosis factor-a(TNF-a)is a pleiotropic pro-inflammatory cytokine induced by bacterial infections.Since LT accumulates and cytokines,predominantly TNF,amass during B.anthracis infection,co-treatment of TNF+LT in mice was used to mimic in vivo conditions for LT to function in inflamed hosts.Bone marrow transplantation and genetically engineered mice showed unexpectedly that the death of intestinal epithelial cells(IECs)rather than that of hematopoietic cells led to LT+TNF-induced lethality.Inhibition of p38a mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)signaling by LT in IECs promoted TNF-induced apoptosis and necroptosis of IECs,leading to intestinal damage and mouse death.Consistently,p38a inhibition by LT enhanced TNF-mediated cell death in human colon epithelial HT-29 cells.As intestinal damage is one of the leading causes of lethality in anthrax patients,the IEC damage caused by LT+TNF would most likely be a mechanism underneath this clinical manifestation and could be a target for interventions.

In the green energy and carbon-neutral technology,electrochemical energy storage devices have received continuously increasing attention recently.However,due to the unavoidable volume expansion/shrinkage of key materials or irreversible mechanical damages during application,the stability of energy storage and delivery as well as the lifetime of these devices are severely shortened,leading to serious performance degradation or even safety issues.Therefore,the utilization of self-healable gels into electrochemical energy storage devices,such as electrodes,binders,and electrolytes,is proven as an effective method to realize long-term stable operation of these devices via the self-repairing of mechanical and electrochemical characteristics.Herein,this review first summarizes the feature and fabrication of different gels,paying special attention to hydrogels,organohydrogels,and ionogels.Then,basic concepts and figure of merit of self-healable gels are analyzed with a detailed discussion at the healing mechanisms,from reversible dynamic bonds to physical molecular diffusion,and to external healing trigger.Then we introduce all the important parts of electrochemical energy storage devices,which could be replaced by healable gels to enhance the durability,including electrodes,binders,and electrolytes.Finally,the critical challenges and future perspectives regarding the future development of healable gels based high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices or electronics are provided.

Noncovalent cross-linked engineering hydrogel with low hysteresis and high sensitivity for flexible self-powered electronics

In this study,the hydrogel network was reinforced by covalent-like hydrogen bonding,and the strong binding ability of boron-nitrogen coordination served as the main driving force.Among them,acrylamide(AM)and 3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid(AAPBA)were the main body,and the numerous hydroxyl groups in the trehalose(Treh)molecule and other polymer groups formed strong hydrogen bonding interactions to improve the mechanical properties of the PAM/PAAPBA/Treh(PAAT)hydrogel and ensured the simplicity of the synthesis process.The hydrogel possessed high strain at break(1239%),stress(64.7 kPa),low hysteresis(100%to 500%strain,corresponding to dissipation energy from 1.37 to 7.80 kJ/m^(3)),and outstanding cycling stability(retained more than 90%of maximum stress after 200 ten-sile cycles).By integrating carbon nanotubes(CNTs)into PAAT hydrogel(PAATC),the PAATC hydrogel with excellent strain response performance was successfully constructed.The PAATC conductive hydro-gel exhibited high sensitivity(gauge factor(GF)=10.58 and sensitivity(S)=0.304 kPa^(-1)),wide strain response range(0.5%-1000%),fast response time(450 ms),and short recovery time(350 ms),excellent fatigue resistance,and strain response stability.Furthermore,the PAATC-based triboelectric nanogener-ator(TENG)displayed outstanding energy harvesting performance,which shows its potential for appli-cation in self-powered electronic devices.

Real-time porosity reduction during metal directed energy deposition using a pulse laser

Porosity is a challenging issue in additive manufacturing and is detrimental to the quality of the additively manufactured products.In this study,a real-time porosity reduction technique was developed by incorporating a pulse laser into a laser metal powder directed energy deposition(DED)system.The incorporated pulse laser can accelerate fluid flow within the melt pool and facilitate the escape of pores before complete solidification.It achieves this real-time porosity reduction by inducing accelerated and turbulent Marangoni flow,ultrasonic waves,and shock waves into the melt pool.The uniqueness and advantages of the proposed technique include the following:(1)For a laser metal powder DED process,this study proposed a noncontact,nondestructive,and real-time porosity reduction technique at the melt pool level.(2)It was experimentally and numerically validated that the developed technique did not alter the geometry and the grain structure of the manufactured Ti-6Al-4V samples.(3)Because the porosity reduction is accomplished at the melt pool level,its application is not limited by the size,shape,or complexity of the printing target.(4)The developed technique can be readily incorporated into the existing DED systems without any modification of the original tool-path design.The experimental results showed that the pore volume fraction decreased from 0.132%to 0.005%,no pores larger than 6×10^(4)μm^(3) were observed,and a 91%reduction in the total pore number was achieved when the pulse laser energy reached 11.5 mJ.

Early embryonic transcriptomes of Zeugodacus tau provide insight into sex determination and differentiation genes

Zeugodacus tau(Walker)is an invasive pest.The sterile insect technique is an environment-friendly method for pest control.Understanding the mechanism of sex determination will contribute to improving efficiency of this technique.In this study,we identified the transformer(tra)gene in Z.tau.One female-specific and two male-specific isoforms of tra were found in Z.tau,and the male-specific splicing pattern of tra was found to occur 5 h after egg laying.We performed transcriptome sequencing at 1 h(E1),5 h(E5),and 9 h(E9)after egg laying and obtained high-quality transcriptome libraries of early embryo development.We identified 13297 and 11713 differentially expressed genes(DEGs)from E5 versus E1 and E9 versus E1 comparisons,respectively.To explore the potential functions of the DEGs during embryonic development,Gene Ontology,Clusters of Orthologous Groups of proteins,and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses were performed.Twenty-six genes potentially involved in sex determination or differentiation,including Maleness-on-the-Y(MoY),were identified in Z.tau.To verify the transcriptome results,15 genes were selected for quantitative real-time PCR validation.The results were consistent with the transcriptome sequencing results.Moreover,U2 small nuclear riboprotein auxiliary factor(U2AF-50),female lethal d(fl(2)d),and virilizer(vir)were highly expressed at E5,indicating that they may be related to the sex-specific splicing of tra.Further functional analysis is needed to confirm this speculation.Our data provide an insight into the mechanism underlying sex determination and differentiation in tephritid species.

Two-step growth of β-Ga_(2)O_(3) on c-plane sapphire using MOCVD for solar-blind photodetector

In this work,a two-step metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD)method was applied for growingβ-Ga_(2)O_(3) film on c-plane sapphire.Optimized buffer layer growth temperature(T_(B))was found at 700℃ and theβ-Ga_(2)O_(3) film with full width at half maximum(FWHM)of 0.66°was achieved.A metal−semiconductor−metal(MSM)solar-blind photodetector(PD)was fabricated based on theβ-Ga_(2)O_(3) film.Ultrahigh responsivity of 1422 A/W@254 nm and photo-to-dark current ratio(PDCR)of 10^(6) at 10 V bias were obtained.The detectivity of 2.5×10^(15) Jones proved that the photodetector has outstanding performance in detecting weak signals.Moreover,the photodetector exhibited superior wavelength selectivity with rejection ratio(R_(250 nm)/R_(400 nm))of 105.These results indicate that the two-step method is a promising approach for preparation of high-qualityβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)films for high-performance solar-blind photodetectors.

Nitrogen(N)-doped carbon materials as metal catalyst supports have attracted signifi cant attention,but the eff ect of N dopants on catalytic performance remains unclear,especially for complex reaction processes such as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis(FTS).Herein,we engineered ruthenium(Ru)FTS catalysts supported on N-doped carbon overlayers on TiO_(2)nanoparticles.By regulating the carbonization temperatures,we successfully controlled the types and contents of N dopants to identify their impacts on metal-support interactions(MSI).Our fi ndings revealed that N dopants establish a favorable surface environment for electron transfer from the support to the Ru species.Moreover,pyridinic N demonstrates the highest electron-donating ability,followed by pyrrolic N and graphitic N.In addition to realizing excellent catalytic stability,strengthening the interaction between Ru sites and N dopants increases the Ru^(0)/Ru^(δ+)ratios to enlarge the active site numbers and surface electron density of Ru species to enhance the strength of adsorbed CO.Consequently,it improves the catalyst’s overall performance,encompassing intrinsic and apparent activities,as well as its ability for carbon chain growth.Accordingly,the as-synthesized Ru/TiO_(2)@CN-700 catalyst with abundant pyridine N dopants exhibits a superhigh C_(5+)time yield of 219.4 mol CO/(mol Ru·h)and C_(5+)selectivity of 85.5%.
