Assessment of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the Atlantic Ocean through an Algorithm Based on Precipitation

The Intertropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ)is a key atmospheric system on a global scale,primarily driven by trade wind convergence near the *** ITCZ plays a crucial role in modulating the climate of the borders of tropical continental *** instance,Northeastern Brazil experiences a climate influenced by the ITCZ over the Atlantic *** some periods,the ITCZ exhibits double bands,known as the double *** the features of the ITCZ have been described using various approaches and atmospheric variables,there is still a lack of regional studies focusing on the ITCZ and double ITCZ in the Atlantic *** this context,the main goals of this study are(1)to describe a simple algorithm based on precipitation to identify the ITCZ and double ITCZ,(2)to present a climatology(1997-2022)of the position,width,and intensity of these two convective bands,and(3)to investigate variabilities in the ITCZ characteristics associated with anomalies of sea surface temperature(SST)in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic *** double ITCZ typically occurs southward of the main cloud band,and between February and April,both bands are more distant(~4.5°).In the western sector of the Atlantic Ocean,the ITCZ and its double band extend to more southerly latitudes in austral *** the entire Atlantic basin,the annual mean of the latitudinal position,width,and intensity of the ITCZ is 4.9°N,4.2°,and 11 mm/day,respectively,while for the double ITCZ,it is 0.4°N,2.6°,10.3 mm/day,*** the SST anomalies in the Pacific Ocean(El Niño and La Niña episodes)affect more the ITCZ width,the SST anomalies in the Tropical South Atlantic affect both its position and width.

Brazilian biomes are home to a significant portion of the world’s biodiversity,with a total of 14%of existing species and still concentrate 20%of the world’s water ***,changes in biomes have a direct impact on rainfall patterns and water *** on this,the objective was to evaluate the variability of rainfall in the four existing biomes in the Northeast Brazil(NEB)and their interaction with the ENSO climate variability mode and regional scale meteorological systems via CHELSA *** this,monthly rainfall data were used from 1979 to 2013,with a spatial resolution of 1 km×1 km of the CHELSA product,and seasonal and annual rainfall patterns were extracted via *** was found that the rainy season in the Amazon,Caatinga and Cerrado biomes occurred between January and April,with varying intensities,except for the Atlantic *** seasonality patterns are associated with the NEB meteorological systems,with emphasis on ITCZ(all Biomes),UTCV(Amazon,Caatinga and Cerrado),Frontal Systems(extreme south of Caatinga,Cerrado and Atlantic Forest)and EWD/TWD in the(Atlantic Forest).In the inter-annual scale,the remarkable influence of ENSO was verified,mainly in the years 1983,1985,1989,1993,1998,2009 and *** is noteworthy that 1985 was the wettest year of the period,with a surplus in all biomes,while the driest year differs between the Amazon(1983),Atlantic Forest and Caatinga(1993)and Cerrado(2012)*** study via orbital product in NEB showed that anthropogenic processes and natural variability interfere with the forms of rain interception in the biomes and hence in rainfall patterns and water recycling in NEB.

Evaluation of Storage Potential of <i>Jatropha curcas</i>L. Seeds

Ensuring the physiological quality of the seeds depends on storage conditions. Since their quality cannot be improved, good conditions during this period will contribute on keeping them viable for a longer time, delaying the deterioration process. In the present study, the effect of five storage periods in a refrigerated chamber at 15℃± 1℃, on the seeds viability during 30, 60, 90, 150 and 240 days of storage in glass containers was evaluated. Four replicates of twenty-five seeds per treatment were used and the data were compared by regression equation. It verified that, regardless of the storage time, the seeds when submitted to the drying temperature of 35℃and 40℃showed a significant linear reduction of germination, GSI and seed vigor after storage.

The Prevalence and Outcomes of Influenza Virus Infection in Heart Failure Patients in Brazil: Influenza Infection in Heart Failure

Background: Respiratory tract infections were associated with acute exacerbations of heart failure (HF). However, the role of the influenza virus, a major agent of such infections, in this population remained unclear. Method: During the influenza virus seasons of 2013 and 2014 we prospectively assessed influenza respiratory illnesses in a cohort of adults primarily hospitalized for management of acute decompensated HF and a cohort of HF outpatients. Qualitative RT-PCR for?influenza?A (A/H1, A/H12009pdm, A/H3) and B virus testing was performed on nasopharyngeal swab samples. Result: A total of 121 patients were included, 58.3% males (n?= 70), mean age 57.7 years old (±14.0), mean left ejection fraction 35.3 (±9.8). Of these, 50.4% were inpatients (n?= 61). The prevalence of symptoms of respiratory infections was 28.0% (n?= 34) and 4.9% (n?= 6) of all samples were positive for influenza virus. Only influenza A was detected and all cases were among inpatients. Influenza-positive patients had a greater need for antimicrobials (83.3%,?n?= 5;16.3%,?n= 9;?p?= 0.001) and for mechanical ventilation (50.0%,?n?= 3;3.6%,?n?= 2;?p?< 0.001) than Influenza-negative patients. The prevalence of influenza virus was not related to mortality (OR 4.58;?p?= 0.16). Conclusion:?Although not common, the influenza virus infection resulted in worst outcomes, with a greater need for antimicrobials and mechanical ventilation. Immunization and antiviral treatment in high risk patients may positively impact their outcomes.

Acute pancreatitis complicated with splenic rupture: A case report

Atraumatic splenic rupture is an uncommon complication of acute pancreatitis. This report describes the case of a 30-year-old man with acute pancreatitis and splenic vein thrombosis complicated by splenic rupture. The patient was admitted to the emergency department with pain in the upper abdomen that had been present for six hours and was associated with vomiting and sweating. He was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis of alcoholic etiology. Upon computed tomography(CT) of the abdomen, the pancreatitis was scored as Balthazar C grade, and a suspicious area of necrosis affecting 30% of the pancreas with splenic vein thrombosis was revealed. Seventytwo hours after admission, the patient had significant improvement in symptoms. However, he showed clinical worsening on the sixth day of hospitalization, with increasing abdominal distension and reduced hemoglobin levels. A CT angiography showed a large amount of free fluid in the abdominal cavity, along with a large splenic hematoma and contrast extravasation along the spleen artery. The patient subsequently underwent laparotomy, which showed hemoperitoneum due to rupture of the splenic parenchyma. A splenectomy was then performed, followed by ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage.

Potassium Fertilization and Physiological Soybean Seed Quality

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of increased application rates of potassium on the physiological quality of seeds from different soybean cultivars. Seeds from two locations (S?o Gotardo, MG and Lavras, MG, Brazil) were used. After harvest, the seeds were sent to the Central Seed Analysis Laboratory of the Federal University of Lavras. We used a randomized design in a 4 × 6 factorial arrangement of four cultivars and six doses of potassium. All tests were performed with two replicates of 50 seeds (300 seeds per treatment). Germination, emergence under controlled conditions, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and tetrazolium tests were performed. Data were subjected to analysis of variance. In soybean seed production fields with high potassium content in the soil, higher application rates of potassium do not increase the physiological quality of seeds.

The soybean crop has great economical importance in Brazil and in the world. In order to make the crop production profitable, several factors must be considered. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of spacing between soybean crop rows (Glycine max). The experiment was installed in the Mutuca farm (Arapoti—PR, southern Brazil), in the crop seasons of 2012/2013 (four seeding seasons) and 2013/2014 (two seeding seasons), in a completely randomized blocks design. We used four treatments and six replicates. The treatments were the spacing between rows as follow: 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 m. The variables evaluated were: initial and final plant population, plant height, number of internodes, viable internodes, pods per plant, grains per pod, mass of thousand grains and crop productivity. We concluded that the reduction of the spacing between rows significantly increased, in most part of the crop seasons, the number of pods per plants and the crop productivity.

Alternatives of Control of Dawn Crop and Crop Mole in Pre-Harvest in Peasant Fruit

Fruit rot, besides causing losses in production, reduces the final quality of the product interfering in the commercialization. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of alternative products applied to pre-harvest for control of brown rot (Monilinia fructicola) and soft rot (Rhizopus spp.) In peaches. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Nepomuceno-MG, in a peach orchard of the cultivar Diamante. The experimental design was a randomized block design with 7 treatments and 3 replicates, with field plots formed by 12 plants (arranged in 3 rows), being considered for the evaluations only the two central plants. Three applications were made at flowering and at 21;7 and 3 days before harvest, with solutions containing the following treatments: 1-Clove oil 0.1%;2-silicate clay 1.5%;3-Phosphite K 0.20%;4-Benzalkonium chloride 0.25%;5-Azoxystrobin 0.02%;6-Iprodione 0.15%;7-Witness (water only). Treatments 4 and 5 were applied only at 21 and 7 days before harvest. Ten fruits were selected and placed in sterile trays under uncontrolled conditions, with disease evaluations at 3 and 6 days after the beginning of storage in 2005 and at 3;6 and 9 days in 2006. The iprodione controlled the incidence of M. fructicola and had no effect on Rhizopus spp. Clove oil controlled the incidence and severity of M. fructicola by the fifth day and Rhizopus spp. by the sixth day. The phosphites of k, benzalkonium chloride and azoxystrobin were efficient in controlling the incidence and severity of Rhizopus spp. and had no effect on M. fructicola.

Background: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease classified into two subgroups for therapeutic purposes:paucibacillary(PB)and multibacillary(MB),closely related to the host immune *** this context it is noteworthy looking for immunological biomarkers applicable as complementary diagnostic tools as well as a laboratorial strategy to follow-up leprosy household ***:: The cross-sectional study enrolled 49 participants,including 19 patients and 30 healthy *** blood mononuclear cells(PBMC)were isolated and incubated in the presence of Mycobacterium leprae *** cells were prepared for surface(CD4+and CD8+)and intracytoplasmic cytokine staining(IFN-γ,IL-4 and IL-10).Multiple comparisons amongst groups were carried out by ANOVA,Kruskal–Wallis,Student T or Mann–Whitney *** analysis of categorical variables was performed by *** biomarker signature analysis was conducted using the global median values for each biomarker index as the cut-off edge to identify the proportion of subjects with high biomarker ***: The cytokine signature analysis demonstrated that leprosy patients presented a polyfunctional profile of T-cells subsets,with increased frequency of IFN-γ+T-cell subsets along with IL-10+and IL-4+from CD4+T-cells,as compared to health Controls(Venn diagram report).Moreover,statistical analysis was carried out using parametric or non-parametric variance analysis followed by pairwise multiple comparisons,according to the data normality distribution.L(PB)displayed a polyfunctional profile characterized by enhanced percentage of IFN-γ+,IL-10+and IL-4+produced by most T-cell subsets,as compared to L(MB)that presented a more restricted cytokine functional profile mediated by IL-10+and IL-4+T-cells with minor contribution of IFN-γproduced by CD4+*** was that HHC(MB)exhibited enhanced frequency of IFN-γ+T-cells,contrasting with HHC(PB)that presented a cytokine profile limited t
