The incidence of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) has grown by a factor of 6.4 between 1973 and 2012 (1). According to the United States Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER), some 50% of all NEN, 3.56×10^5, are gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) in origin, including 1.05, 10.4, 0.48×10^5 of the small intestine, rectum, and pancreas, respectively. Like the Spanish group, others have reported a higher incidence of pancreatic NEN (P-NEN) (2). Given its typically indolent course, GEP-NENs are the second most prevalent tumors of the digestive system, surpassed only by colorectal cancer, underscoring the importance of understanding them, their diagnosis, and efficient treatment strategies.

According to the List of Hazardous Substances of the Agency of the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry(ATSDR 2017), some metallic elements such as Pb or Cd are still considered as the most polluting elements in the world. These elements accumulate in sediments, and there are various methods available that differentiate lithogenic sources from anthropogenic sources. For that, the natural geochemical background is required, however, its definition is far from unanimous: it can be a global or local value,single or statistically estimated value, depending on the studies. Our study is focused on the Subae River in the state of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil, which was historically contaminated by lead metallurgy. The river sediments were sampled at 21 locations: one at the discharge point of the plant’s rainwater basin,ten upstream, and ten downstream. The total contents of Fe, Ti, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, particle-size distribution, and organic matter were analyzed. The conventional geochemical indexes, i.e., the pollution degree(m Cd), pollution load index, and enrichment factor indicated contamination by Zn, Pb, Cr, and ***, a new enrichment factor is introduced, assuming that the sediments come from erosion of soils in the watershed. After obtaining the natural concentrations of metals in the clay, silt, and sand fractions of uncontaminated reference soils, we corrected the pollution indexes by calculating a new individual background in each sediment sample, according to its grain size distribution. This new approach provided more precise indexes in the assessment of sediment pollution, by highlighting higher contamination of Zn and Pb(around 50%) and at the same time the absence of Cr and Cu contamination, two metals not involved with the metallurgical activity.

In the last years,colorectal cancer(CRC)has been increasing substantially in developing *** the consumption of fat and meat have been linked with increased CRC risk,fruits intake can be *** addition,since CRC’s chemotherapy may be accompanied with adverse effects,natural plant products have been postulated as alternative or complementary therapeutic *** fruits are rich sources of bioactive compounds,mainly phenolic compounds,with antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and anticancer benefits,thus,future candidates for CRC ***,this narrative review aims to present and discuss the potential of native Brazilian fruits(e.g.,açaí,cocoa,jaboticaba,passionfruit)on *** studies performed from 2001 to present were ***-rich powders and extracts from Brazilian fruits are the most promising products for CRC *** with açaí(Euterpe oleracea)and cocoa(Theobroma cacao)are more numerous and their effects on CRC models in vitro and in vivo are demonstrated with more complexity in terms of molecular *** main signaling pathways modulated by the effects of native Brazilian fruits,so far studied on CRC,are associated with:***(B-cell lymphoma 2-and caspase 3-related proteins),***(pro-inflammatory interleukins and enzymes),and *** stress(antioxidant enzymes).In addition,adhesion molecules and nuclear factor kappa B have been shown to be downregulated,which can interfere positively in several cellular processes,including proliferation,angiogenesis,and *** investigation of signaling pathways of great relevance for CRC initiation and progression is still necessary.

The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

The campo rupestre sensu lato is a vegetation type that occurs in South American mountains,supports a distinctive flora characterized by high rates of endemism,high herbaceous species richness and often-neglected but also species-rich of the arboreal *** aimed to investigate how environmental factors and elevation are associated with the distribution and diversity of woody species in different rupestrian vegetation types across South *** a database of 2,049 woody species from 185 sites across four vegetation types within the campo rupestre,we assessed how the vegetation types were grouped according to their floristic composition and number of shared indicator species,as well as by using different beta diversity *** most important variables from a set of 27 variables(***,geo-edaphic and climatic)explaining species distribution were identified using redundancy analysis(RDA)and variation partitioning *** distribution of vegetation types was related to both environmental and spatial fractions,with a set of 17 variables retained(***,grass cover and temperature seasonality as the most important variables).There was an association between the floristic composition of each vegetation type and the elevation *** the identified vegetation types are floristically related,they are distinguished by exclusive and habitat-specialist woody *** uniqueness of vegetation types should be considered in terms of complementarity for the conservation of campos rupestres.

Drought is considered the main environmental factor limiting productivity in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. However, recent studies have reported that exposure to water deficit conditions enables plants to respond to subsequent stresses. Thus, this study investigates the ecophysiological acclimatization of eucalyptus clones submitted to recurrent water deficit cycles. Eucalyptus seedlings were submitted to three recurrent water deficit cycles and anatomical, morphological and physiological changes were analyzed. The results were:(1) Eucalyptus seedlings responded to water deficits by directing carbohydrates to root and stem growth;(2) Size and number of stomata were reduced;(3) Stomatal conductance decreased which allowed the plants to reduce water losses through transpiration,increasing instantaneous water use efficiency;(4) The relationship between gas exchanges and available water contents allowed the seedlings to uptake the retained soil water athigher tensions;and,(5) Physiological recovery from subsequent water deficits became faster. As a result of these changes, the eucalyptus seedlings recovered from the same degree of water stress more rapidly.
