It.is a communit. wide belief t.at.t.e At.ant.c Mult.-decadal Oscillat.on (AMO) and t.e Accumulat.d Cyclone Energy (ACE) are st.ongly posit.vely correlat.d and in lock-st.p for t.e charact.rizat.on of a t.opical cyclone (t.)—hurricane season;including how many named t.s will form and how many will become hurricanes and major hurricanes [1]-[4]. In t.is paper, we decompose t.e AMO and ACE t.me series int. t.eir int.rnal modes of variabilit. using t.e Hilbert.Huang t.ansform REF _Ref386094582 \r \h [5] and t.e Ensemble Empirical Modal Decomposit.on (EEMD) REF _Ref386094585 \r \h [6], and look int. t.e relat.onships t.at.exist.bet.een t.e individual corresponding modes of t.e AMO and t.e ACE. We t.en evaluat. t.e degrees of frequency domain correlat.ons bet.een t.e int.rnal modes of variabilit. of t.e AMO and t.e ACE across t.e ent.re record lengt. t.me series. t.e 2013 Nort. At.ant.c Hurricane Season, which had been predict.d t. be “above normal”, wit. an ACE est.mat.d t. be bet.een 122 and 138 by t.e Nat.onal Oceanic & At.ospheric Administ.at.on (NOAA), t.rned out.t. be one of t.e quiet.st.on record. t.e act.al 2013 observed ACE was only 33 (unit. 104 kn2) or 29% of t.e 65 year (1948-2012) average of 103 (wit. a median of 89.5) and is t.e 5t. lowest.value since 1950. Following t.e visual correlat.ons bet.een t.e ACE and t.e AMO in t.e past. and assuming past.is prologue t. t.e fut.re, t.e “above normal” forecast.of t.e ACE led t. a t.opical cyclone communit. wide forecast.of a highly act.ve 2013 hurricane season. So why t.e bust.d 2013 forecast. t.is st.dy will address t.e possible reasons.

Carolina (SC) coast.l zone are evaluat.d for t.eir int.insic, int.rnal variabilit. over t.mporal scales ranging from hours t. mult.-decades. t.e purpose of t.is st.dy was t. bring t.get.er a plet.ora of at.ospheric and coast.l ocean st.t. variable dat. in a specific locale, t. assess t.mporal variabilit.es and possible relat.onships bet.een variables. t.e quest.ons addressed relat. t. t.e concept. of weat.er and climat.. Dat. comprise t.e basis of t.is st.dy. t.e overall dist.ibut.ons of at.ospheric and coast.l oceanic st.t. variable variabilit., including wind speed, direct.on and kinemat.c dist.ibut.ons and st.t. variable amplit.des over a variet. of t.me scales are assessed. Annual variabilit. is shown t. be highly variable from year t. year, making arit.met.c means mat.emat.cally t.act.ble but.physically meaningless. Employing empirical and st.t.st.cal met.odologies, dat. analyses indicat. t.e same number of int.insic, int.rnal modes of t.mporal variabilit. in at.ospheric t.mperat.res, coast.l wind and coast.l wat.r level t.me series, ranging from hours t. days t. weeks t. seasons, sub-seasons, annual, mult.-year, decades, and cent.nnial t.me scales. t.is finding demonst.at.s t.at.t.e at.osphere and coast.l ocean in a sout.east.rn U.S. coast.l cit. are charact.rized by a set.of similar frequency and amplit.de modulat.d phenomena. Kinemat.c hodograph descript.rs of at.ospheric winds reveal coherent.rotating and rectilinear particle motions. A mathematical statistics-based wind to wave-to-wave algorithm is developed and applied to offshore marine buoy data to create an hour-by-hour forecast capability from 1 to 24 hours;with confidence levels put forward. t.e report.d overall rise in global surface t.mperat.res since t.e lat.er 19t. Cent.ry is viewed largely as an at.ospheric phenomena. However, we show t.at.t.e global ocean is an import.nt.component.in det.rmining global surface t.mperat.res. Via an empirical, mat.emat.cal met.odology, we reveal t.e int.insic modes of variabilit. of planet.ry t.mperat.res over t.e past.160 years, and find periods of cooling and warming, wit. mult.ple modes of variabilit.;seasonal, int.r-annual, decadal, mult.-decadal and an overall warming t.end. Our calculat.d overall rat. of warming differs significant.y from t.e est.mat. of t.e Int.rgovernment.l Program on Climat. Change, as well as t.e Nongovernment.l Panel on Climat. Change. We also invest.gat. t.e modes of variabilit. of recognized climat. fact.rs, and find a previously unreport.d 140 year cycle in t.o climat. syst.m dat. set.. A relat.vely large amplit.de 60 - 70 year cycle mode appears in all of t.e climat. fact.rs, and may be relat.d t. t.e t.me scale of t.e oceanic Meridional Overt.rning Circulat.on. t.is and ot.er oceanic feat.res may modulat. global surface t.mperat.res. In t.e present.st.dy, ozone was int.oduced as an alt.rnat.ve approach t. harvest.and disrupt.microalgae cells (Chlorella vulgaris) simult.neously for biodiesel product.on. At.t.e opt.mum ozonat.on condit.ons (6.14 g·h^(−1) ozone concent.at.on, 30 min ozonat.on t.me, 1 L·min^(−1) of ozone flowrat. at.medium pH of 10 and t.mperat.re of 30℃), t.e sediment.t.on efficiency of microalgae cells increased significant.y from 12.56% t. 68.62%. It.was observed t.at.t.e microalgae cells aggregat.d t. form flocs aft.r pret.eat.d wit. ozone due t. t.e increment.of surface charge from −20 t. −6.59 mV. Besides, ozone had successfully disrupt.d t.e microalgae cells and result.d in efficient.lipid ext.act.on, which was 1.9 t.mes higher t.an t.e cont.ol sample. t.e ext.act.d microalgae lipid was mainly consist.d of met.yl palmit.t. (C16:0), met.yl oleat. (C18:1) and met.yl linolenat. (C18:3), making it.suit.ble for biodiesel product.on. Finally, ut.lizat.on of recycled cult.re media aft.r ozonat.on pre-t.eat.ent.showed robust.growt. of microalgae, in which t.e biomass yield was maint.ined in t.e range of 0.796 t. 0.879 g ·h^(−1) for 5 cycles of cult.vat.on.

Cell adhesion processes are governed by t.e nanoscale arrangement.of t.e ext.acellular mat.ix （ECM）, being more affect.d by local rat.er t.an global concent.at.ons of cell adhesive ligands. In many cell-based st.dies, graft.ng of dendrimers on surfaces has shown t.e benefit. of t.e local increase in concent.at.on provided by t.e dendrit.c configurat.on, alt.ough t.e lack of any report.d surface charact.rizat.on has limit.d any direct.correlat.on bet.een dendrimer disposit.on and cell response. In order t. est.blish a proper correlat.on, some cont.ol over dendrimer surface deposit.on is desirable. Here, dendrimer nanopat.erning has been employed t. address arginine-glycine-aspart.c acid （RGD） densit. effect. on cell adhesion. Nanopat.erned surfaces were fully charact.rized by at.mic force microscopy （AFM）, scanning t.nneling microscopy （St.） and X-ray phot.elect.on spect.oscopy （XPS）, showing t.at.t.nable dist.ibut.ons of cell adhesive ligands on t.e surface are obt.ined as a funct.on of t.e init.al dendrimer bulk concent.at.on. Cell experiment. showed a clear correlat.on wit. dendrimer surface layout. Subst.at.s present.ng regions of high local ligand densit. result.d in a higher percent.ge of adhered cells and a higher degree of mat.rat.on of focal adhesions （FAs）. t.erefore, dendrimer nano- pat.erning is present.d as a suit.ble and cont.olled approach t. address t.e effect.of local ligand densit. on cell response. Moreover, due t. t.e easy modificat.on of dendrimer peripheral groups, dendrimer nanopat.erning can be furt.er ext.nded t. ot.er ECM ligands having densit. effect. on cells.
