Objective: The aim of our study is to assess the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women, and to evaluate the effect of severity of anemia on maternal and perinatal outcome. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from hospital records. Study population of all pregnant women who had delivered in our hospital after twenty weeks gestation between July 2014 and December 2016. Results: A total of 2654 pregnant women fulfilled the inclusion criteria, 42% were anemic, 83.3% mild anemia group (I) which represents the majority of patients and 16.7% moderate to severe anemia group (II). The majority of cases were due to iron deficiency anemia 92.8%, while 7.2% were due to sickle cell trait, B-thalassemia intermedia, and other causes. The incidence of postpartum hemorrhage, cesarean delivery, and infections was significantly higher in group II compared to group I (5.4%, 40.3%, 3.8% Vs, 2.9%, 31.0%, 2.0%;p = 0.007, 0.041, 0.043 respectively). Low Apgar score, preterm labor, and low birth weight babies were significantly higher in group II compared to group I (11.8%, 12.9%, 11.3% Vs 8.7%, 9.0%, 7.4%;p = 0.034, 0.046, 0.032). Conclusions: This study clarified that anemia is prevalent among pregnant women particularly mild anemia. Early diagnosis and treatment from first trimester has an essential role in managing maternal anemia and it reflects directly on the perinatal outcome. prematurity, low birth weight infants, and postpartum hemorrhage are the commonest maternal and neonatal complications.

phytosynthesis of metal nanoparticles is gaining importance due to their biocompatibility,low toxicity and eco-friendly *** the present study,an aqueous extract of Jatropha seedcake(JSC)is assessed as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles(AgNps).The maximum reduction of silver ions occur when 1 mM AgNO_(3) solution is treated with 0.1 volume fraction of JSC extract in boiling water bath for 10 *** synthesis of AgNps is monitored by the excitation of surface plasmon resonance using UV-vis *** AgNps are found to be mono-dispersed,spherical with average particle size of 10.48±74 nm when analyzed by transmission electron *** selected area electron diffraction(SAED)ring pattern indicated the polycrystalline nature of the *** x-ray diffraction data further confirm the presence of characteristic(111),(200),(220),(311)and(222)diffraction planes of face centered cubic structure,and the calculated lattice parameter comes out to be 4.083Å.FTIR analysis reveals the involvement of proteins and phenols in reduction and stabilization of *** synthesized AgNps have significant antibacterial action on both the Gram positive and negative bacteria.

The Impact of Third Trimester Maternal Serum Vitamin B12 and Folate Status on Fetal Birth Weight. Is Maternal Serum Homocysteine a predictor of Low Birth Weight Infants?

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate vitamin B12, folate, and homocysteine status in pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy and their relationship to fetal birth weight and their correlation to corresponding neonatal cord blood levels, and in addition, to evaluate the possibility of maternal serum homocysteine level as a predictor of low birth weight infants. Subjects and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of two hundred pregnant women in third trimester (≥28 weeks) were recruited. After a detailed obstetrical and medical history, and clinical assessment, participants were subdivided into two groups: Group (A)—pregnant women who delivered average birth weight (ABW) infants and Group (B) for those who delivered low birth weight (LBW) infants between completed 37 and 42 weeks. Results: Vitamin B12 deficiency was observed in 24.1% of the total cohort. The mean vitamin B12 level was significantly lower in group (B) compared to group (A) (195.2 ± 38.9 vs. 225.9 ± 66.59 respectively p = 0.008). The mean level of homocysteine for women in group (B) was significantly higher than those determined from women in group (A) (9.10 ± 5.9 vs. 7.6 ± 3.83 respectively, p = 0.042). On the other hand, the mean folate levels showed statistically insignificant differences between both groups. The mean cord vitamin B12 level was significantly lower in LBW infants in comparison to ABW infants (277 ± 61.93 vs. 312.03 ± 81.87 respectively, p = 0.015), while the mean level of cord homocysteine for LBW infants was significantly higher than those levels determined from ABW infants (7.9 ± 3.79 vs. 6.6 ± 2.09 respectively p = 0.0049). Conclusion: Maternal micronutrients particularly cobalamin deficiency could be significant risk for LBW infants. Hyperhomocysteinemia has been shown to be a predictor for adverse pregnancy outcomes particularly LBW.

Some properties of Si,Ge,and α-Sn Using pseudopotential Theory

The pseudopotential theory beyond second order with our well established single parametric model potential is employed to compute total crystal energy, static bulk modulus, energy band gap at the point X on the Jones-zone face and pressure-volume relation （equation of state under pressure） of Si, Ge and α-Sn using Nagy＇s static local field correction function. The results are compared with those obtained using few other local field correction functions. The present results of total energy are in good agreement with the experimental data. Bulk modulus calculated by Nagy＇s screening function is perfectly matching with the experimental results for Ge and α-Sn. Some deviation is found in the value of energy band gap.

A novel approach of characterizing single parametric model potential is proposed by equating total pair wise force to zero. Our well-established single parametric model potential is characterized using the proposed idea and compared the obtained parameter with parameters computed by previously used approaches. Thus characterized pseudopotential is then tested to compute total energy of alkali metals. The results establish the reliability of proposed idea of making total pair wise force to zero in determining the parameter of the pseudopotential.

Meta-analysis comparing differing methods of endoscopic therapy for colorectal lesions

AIM： To compare the outcomes of endoscopic mucosal resection （EMR） and endoscopic submucosal dissection （ESD） of colorectal ***： An electronic systematic literature search of four computerized databases was performed in July 2014 identifying studies reporting the outcomes of colorectal ESD and EMR. The primary outcome measures were en-bloc resection rate, endoscopic clearance rate and lesion recurrence rate of the patients followed up. The secondary outcome was the complication rate （including bleeding, perforation and surgery post EMR or ESD rate）. Statistical pooling and random effects modelling of the studies calculating risk difference, heterogeneity and assessment of bias and quality were ***： Six observational studies reporting the outcomes of 1324 procedures were included. The en-bloc resection rate was 50% higher in the ESD group than in the EMR group （95%CI： 0.17-0.83, p 〈 0.0001, I2 = 99.7%）. Endoscopic clearance rates were also signifcantly higher in the ESD group （95%CI： -0.06-0.02, p 〈 0.0001, I2 = 92.5%）. The perforation rate was 7% higher in the ESD group than the EMR group （95%CI： 0.05-0.09, p 〉 0.05, I2 = 41.1%） and the rate of recurrence was 50% higher in the EMR group than in the ESD group （95%CI： 0.20-0.79, p 〈 0.001, I2 = 99.5%）. Heterogeneity remained consistent when subgroup analysis of high quality studies was performed （with the exception of piecemeal resection rate）, and overall effect sizes remained unchanged for all ***： ESD demonstrates higher en-bloc resection rates and lower recurrence rates compared to colorectal EMR. Differences in outcomes may beneft from increased assessment through well-designed comparative studies.

Tetracycline-inducible protein expression in pancreatic cancer cells: Effects of CapG overexpression

AIM: To establish stable tetracycline-inducible pancreatic cancer cell lines. METHODS: Suit-2, Miapaca-2, and panc-1 cells were transfected with a second generation reverse tetracycline-controlled transactivator protein (rtTA2S-M2), under the control of either a cytomegalovirus (CMV) or a chicken β-actin promoter, and the resulting clones were ***: Use of the chicken (β-actin) promoter proved superior for both the production and maintenance of doxycycline-inducible cell lines. The system proved versatile, enabling transient inducible expression of a variety of genes, including GST-p, CYp2E1, S100A6, and the actin capping protein, CapG. To determine the physiological utility of this system in pancreatic cancer cells, stable inducible CapG expressors were established. Overexpressed CapG was localised to the cytoplasm and the nuclear membrane, but was not observed in the nucleus. High CapG levels were associated with enhanced motility, but not with changes to the cell cycle, or cellular proliferation. In CapG-overexpressing cells, the levels and phosphorylation status of other actin-moduating proteins (Cofilin and Ezrin/Radixin) were not altered. However, preliminary analyses suggest that the levels of other cellular proteins, such as ornithine aminotransferase and enolase, are altered upon CapG induction. CONCLUSION: We have generated pancreatic-cancer derived cell lines in which gene expression is fully controllable.

Impact of transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunt on post liver transplantation outcomes: Study based on the United Network for Organ Sharing database

AIMTo determine the impact of transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunt (TIpS) on post liver transplantation (LT) outcomes. METHODSUtilizing the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database, we compared patients who underwent LT from 2002 to 2013 who had underwent TIpS to those without TIpS for the management of ascites while on the LT waitlist. The impact of TIpS on 30-d mortality, length of stay (LOS), and need for re-LT were studied. For evaluation of mean differences between baseline characteristics for patients with and without TIpS, we used unpaired t-tests for continuous measures and χp>2p> tests for categorical measures. We estimated the impact of TIpS on each of the outcome measures. Multivariate analyses were conducted on the study population to explore the effect of TIpS on 30-d mortality post-LT, need for re-LT and LOS. All covariates were included in logistic regression analysis. RESULTSWe included adult patients (age ≥ 18 years) who underwent LT from May 2002 to September 2013. Only those undergoing TIpS after listing and before liver transplant were included in the TIpS group. We excluded patients with variceal bleeding within two weeks of listing for LT and those listed for acute liver failure or hepatocellular carcinoma. Of 114770 LT in the UNOS database, 32783 (28.5%) met inclusion criteria. Of these 1366 (4.2%) had TIpS between the time of listing and LT. We found that TIpS increased the days on waitlist (408 ± 553 d) as compared to those without TIpS (183 ± 330 d), p p p = 0.001) by TIpS to LOS. CONCLUSIONTIpS did increase time on waitlist for LT. More importantly, TIpS was not associated with 30-d mortality and re-LT, but it did lengthen hospital LOS after transplantation.
