Context: Obesity is associated with.atrial enlargement and ventricular diastol ic dysfunction, both.known predictors of atrial fibrillation(AF). h.wever, it is unclear wh.th.r obesity is a risk factor for AF. Objective: To examine th. asso ciation between body mass index(BMI) and th. risk of developing AF. Design, Sett ing, and Participants: Prospective, communitybased observational coh.rt in Fra mingh.m, Mass. We studied 5282 participants(mean age, 57[SD, 13] years; 2898 wom en[55%]) with.ut baseline AF(electrocardiograph.c AF or arterial flutter). Body mass index(calculated as weigh. in kilograms divided by square of h.igh. in met ers) was evaluated as both.a continuous and a categorical variable(normal define d as h., 25.0 to h.iques, we also examined mod els including ech.cardiograph.c left atrial diameter to examine wh.th.r th. infl uence of obesity was mediated by ch.nges in left atrial dimensions. Main Outcome Measure: Association between BMI or BMI category and risk of developing newon set AF. Results: During a mean followup of 13.7 years, 526 participants(234 wo men) developed AF. Age adjusted incidence rates for AF increased across th. 3 BM I categories in men(9.7, 10.7, and 14.3 per 1000 personyears) and women(5.1, 8 .6, and 9.9 per 1000 personyears). In multivariable models adjusted for cardio vascular risk factors and interim myocardial infarction or h.art failure, a 4%i ncrease in AF risk per 1-unit increase in BMI was observed in men(95%confidenc e interval[CI], 1%-7%; P=.02) and in women(95%CI, 1%-7%; P=.009). Adjuste d h.zard ratios for AF associated with.obesity were 1.52(95%CI, 1.09-2.13; P=. 02) and 1.46(95%CI, 1.03-2.07; P=.03) for men and women, respectively, compare d with.individuals with.normal BMI. Laminin is a glycoprotein wh.ch.h.s an important role in th. mech.nism of fibrogenesis and is,th.s,related to h.patic fibrosis in addition to presenting increased levels in several types of neoplasias. h.wever,its determination is not routinely considered in th. study of h.patic fibrosis. In th.s review,th. auth.rs critically comment on th. role of th.s glycoprotein compared to oth.r markers of fibrosis th.ough.non-invasive procedures(Fibroscan). Th.y also consider its clinical investigational potential and believe th.t th. continuation of th.se investigations migh. contribute to a better understanding of th. fibrogenic mech.nism,wh.ch.could in turn eith.r lead to th. identification of patients at risk of developing fibrosis non-alcoh.lic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) and non-alcoh.lic steatoh.patitis(NASh. or at least be used as an indicator for h.patic biopsy in such.patients. Finally,th. auth.rs believe th.t serum laminin determination migh. contribute to th. diagnosis of epith.lial tumor metastasis and peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Oleuropein-Specific-β-Glucosidase Activity Marks th. Early Response of Olive Fruits (Olea europaea) to Mimed Insect Attack

Olive fruits are seriously deteriorated by pre and posth.rvest damage due to th. attack of insects, such.as Bactrocera olaea, wh.ch.strongly alters th. quality of olives. Defence response in olive fruits injured both.by path.gens and by mech.nical damages h.s been associated with.th. enzyme β-glucosidase, wh.ch.specifically h.drolyses oleuropein, producing h.gh.y reactive aldeh.de molecules. In situ detection of ^-glucosidase activity in olive fruit tissues following injury, wh.ch.simulates Bactrocera oleae punctures, is reported. Th. assay was performed in two cultivars sh.wing different degrees of susceptibilities to fly infestation. In both.cultivars, th. h.stoch.mical assay for β-glucosidase sh.wed th.t with.n 20 min after th. injury, a strong ^-glucosidase activity could be observed in th. damaged tissues. Th.reafter a progressive enzyme inactivation occurred starting from tissues around th. boundary of th. injury with.decrease of th. enzyme activity and stopped after 3 h. Wh.reas th. mass of active cells reach.d a distance of （300±50） μm from th. edge of th. injury. Bioch.mical analyses sh.wed th.t in extracts of th. injured fruit, β-glucosidase activity rapidly increased with.n 20 min from injury, th.reafter decreasing and reach.ng values comparable with.th.se in intact fruits. Following puncture, th. oleuropein contents did not ch.nge significantly in th. h.gh.susceptibility cultivar, wh.reas it rapidly decreased in th. cultivar sh.wing low susceptibility. Th. results strongly suggest th.t olive fruits susceptible towards fly infestation could be related to th. ability of th. oleuropein-degrading-β-glucosidase to produce th. h.gh.y reactive molecules in th. damaged tissues. As a consequence of puncture, h.gh.level of peroxidase activity was detected. Th.s feature also suggested th.t th.s enzyme could play a key role in th. defence response against insect injuries.
