Soil chemical fertility change over four decades in the Morvan Mountains and influence of tree species (Burgundy, France)

Background: Intensive silvicultural practices and the planting of monospecific forests of coniferous, that are more productive compared to hardwoods may threaten over the mid to long-term the sustainability of soil chemical fertility of forest ecosystems, and are a major concern for forest managers and ***: We investigated the tree species effect(Quercus sessiliflora Smith, Fagus sylvatica L., picea abies Karst.,pseudotsuga menziesii Mirb. Franco., Abies nordmanniana Spach. and pinus nigra Arn. ssp. laricio poiret var. corsicana) on the change over time of soil chemical properties and nutrient pool sizes in the mineral and organic layers of the soil during the 45 years after the plantation of the Breuil-Chenue common garden experiment(Burgundy,France). The organic and mineral soil layers down to 70-cm depth were sampled in the different monospecific plots in 1974, 2001 and ***: Exchangeable Ca and Mg pools and soil pH increased on average over time in the 0–70 cm soil profile in most stands. However, in the topsoil layers(0–15 cm), the decrease of pH, the increase of exchangeable acidity over time under the coniferous stands and the decrease of exchangeable K pools in most stands highlighted that soil acidification is still on-going at Breuil-Chenue site but the intensity of this process depends on the tree ***, three groups of species could be distinguished: i) Nordmann fir(Abies nordmanniana Spach.)/Norway spruce(picea abies Karst.) where acidolysis and chelation occurred, resulting in the most pronounced pH decrease in the topsoil, ii) Douglas fir(pseudotsuga menziesii Mirb. Franco.)/Laricio pine(pinus nigra Arn. ssp. laricio poiret var. corsicana) where acidification caused by elevated nitrification rates is probably currently compensated by larger weathering and/or atmospheric depositions fluxes, and iii) oak(Quercus sessiliflora Smith)/beech(Fagus sylvatica L.) where soil acidification was less intense. Our goal is to decipher which DNA sequences are required for tissue-specific expression of epididymal genes. At least 6 epididymis-specific lipocalin genes are known. These are differently regulated and regionalized in the epididymis. Lipocalin 5 （Lcn5 or mE-RABp） and Lipocalin 8 （Lcn8 or mEp17） are homologous genes belonging to the epididymis-specific lipocalin gene cluster. Both the 5 kb promoter fragment of the Lcn5 gene and the 5.3 kb promoter fragment of the Lcn8 gene can direct transgene expression in the epididymis （Lcn5 to the distal caput and Lcn8 to the initial segment）, indicating that these promoter fragments contain important cis-regulatory element（s） for epididymisspecific gene expression. To define further the fragments regulating gene expression, the Lcn5 promoter was examined in transgenic mice and immortalized epididymal cell lines. After serial deletion, the 1.8 kb promoter fragment of the Lcn5 gene was sufficient for tissue-specific and region-specific gene expression in transgenic mice. Transient transfection analysis revealed that a transcription factor forkhead box A2 （Foxa2） interacts with androgen receptor and binds to the 100 bp fragment of the Lcn5 promoter between 1.2 kb and 1.3 kb and that Foxa2 expression inhibits androgen-dependent induction of the Lcn5 promoter activity. Immunohistochemistry indicated a restricted expression of Foxa2 in the epididymis where endogenous Lcn5 gene expression is suppressed and that the Foxa2 inhibition of the Lcn5 promoter is consistent with the lack of expression of Lcn5 in the corpus and cauda. Our approach provides a basic strategy for further analysis of the epididymal lipocalin gene regulation and flexible control of epididymal function. （Asian j Androl 2007 july; 9： 515-521）

AIM: To evaluate the treatment of pediatric functional chronic intestinal constipation (FCIC) with a probiotic goat yogurt. METHODS: A crossover double-blind formula-controlled trial was carried out on 59 students (age range: 5-15 years) of a public school in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, presenting a FCIC diagnostic, according to Roma Ⅲ criteria. The students were randomized in two groups to receive a goat yogurt supplemented with 109 colony forming unit/mL Bifidobacterium longum (***) (probiotic) daily or only the yogurt for a period of 5 wk (formula). Afterwards, the groups were intercrossed for another 5 wk. Defecation frequency, stool consistency and abdominal and defecation pain were ***: Both treatment groups demonstrated improvement in defecation frequency compared to baseline. However, the group treated with probiotic showed most signif icant improvement in the f irst phase of the study. An inversion was observed after crossing over, resulting in a reduction in stool frequency when this group was treated by formula. probiotic and formula improved stool consistency in the f irst phase of treatment, but the improvement obtained with probiotic was significantly higher (p = 0.03). In the second phase of treatment, the group initially treated with probiotic showed worseningstool consistency when using formula. However, the difference was not signif icant. A signif icant improvement in abdominal pain and defecation pain was observed with both probiotic and formula in the first phase of treatment, but again the improvement was more signif icant for the group treated with B. longum during phase I (p probiotic yogurt and yogurt only for defecation frequency (p = 0.012), defecation pain (p = 0.046) and abdominal pain (p = 0.015).

Magnesium and its alloys are the most investigated materials for solid-state hydrogen storage in the form of metal hydrides,but there are still unresolved problems with the kinetics and thermodynamics of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of this group of *** plastic deformation(SpD)methods,such as equal-channel angular pressing(ECAp),high-pressure torsion(HpT),intensive rolling,and fast forging,have been widely used to enhance the activation,air resistance,and hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials by introducing ultrafine/nanoscale grains and crystal lattice *** severely deformed materials,particularly in the presence of alloying additives or second-phase nanoparticles,can show not only fast hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics but also good cycling *** was shown that some materials that are apparently inert to hydrogen can absorb hydrogen after SpD ***,the SpD methods were effectively used for hydrogen binding-energy engineering and synthesizing new magnesium alloys with low thermodynamic stability for reversible low/room-temperature hydrogen storage,such as nanoglasses,high-entropy alloys,and metastable phases including the high-pressureγ-MgH2 *** work reviews recent advances in the development of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials by SpD processing and discusses their potential in future applications.

Heterogeneous catalytic partial oxidation of lower alkanes(C_1–C_6) on mixed metal oxides

This review paper aims at analysing the state of the art for partial oxidation and oxidative dehydrogenation（ODH） reactions of lower alkanes C–Cinto olefins and oxygenated products（aldehydes, anhydrides,carboxylic acids） on metal oxide catalysts with cations of variable oxidation state, such as Mo and V in particular. Key parameters to be met by the catalysts, such as their redox properties, their structural aspects, active sites composed of ensembles of atoms isolated one from the others, mechanisms of reactions, are discussed. Main features of the different reactions of C–Calkanes and catalysts are analysed and their generalisation for determining more active and more selective catalysts is attempted. prospective views for the future of the domain are proposed.

Optimizing the dataset size of a topo-bathymetric survey for Hammam Debagh Dam, Algeria

The capacity of water reservoirs may be considerably reduced by sediment transport and *** phenomenon may occur quickly in regions prone to erosion, such as Hammam Debagh Dam region in Algeria. For better management of water resources, it is important to estimate the volume of a reservoir by regular and frequent topo-bathymetric surveys. Topo-bathymetric surveys with a high point measurement density are expensive and time-consuming. To reduce this expense and to increase the frequency of topo-bathymetric surveys, it is required to optimize their size and density. The complete survey of the reservoir created by the Hammam Debagh Dam in Algeria was examined in comparison with 19 reduction subsets using geostatistics. The study showed that the complete dataset of 32,164 points, corresponding to a density of 42 points ha-1could be reduced to 10,000 points, i.e. 13 points ha-1,without affecting the estimation of the water volume in the reservoir. This reduction could considerably simplify the work load, reduce the expenses to do these surveys, and, therefore, allow for an increased frequency of topo-bathymetric surveys.

The oxidation of porous Ni-yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ)and Ni-gadolinia-doped ceria(GDC)ceramicmetal(cermet)electrodes in H_(2)O and CO_(2)atmospheres was studied by near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(NAp-XpS).We show that the oxidation of nickel by the two gases is not similar,as is commonly believed,but it depends on the ceramic *** is vulnerable to oxidation in H_(2)O but it resists to CO_(2)in Ni-GDC,as compared to the Ni-YSZ *** by this observation we conceptualize and fabricate Ni-YSZ electrodes modified by ceria nanoparticles,which show significantly higher resistance to CO_(2)oxidation as compared with conventional Ni-YSZ *** preparation of tailormade cermet electrodes with identical bulk/mechanical characteristics but very different surface properties offers a promising fabrication strategy for high-performance and durability solid oxide electrolysis cells for CO_(2)conversion.

Ag_(3)pO_(4) as a novel photoanode material,despite its arguably highest photoactivity,suffers for its poor light absorption and stability for photoelectrochemical(pEC)water *** this work,4.54.5 cm^(2) Ag_(3)pO_(4) microcrystalline films are grown via a room-temperature solution process,and vacuum annealing is proposed to solve the stability and light absorption *** is found that the major process below 400℃ of vacuum annealing is the|Recovery|process for Ag_(3)pO_(4) microcrystals,when lattice defects and Ag0 surface species get ***,|Recrystallization|stage occurs at>40℃.The recovery of native defects of silver vacancies,with both density functional theory calculation and experimental results,could simultaneously improve the light absorption and catalytic activity of Ag_(3)pO_(4).The 400℃-annealed Ag_(3)pO_(4) photoanode,with enhanced light harvesting and crystal quality,exhibits 88% increase in(jlight-jdark)value(1.94 mA cm^(-2))than non-annealed photoanode(1.03 mA cm^(-2)).Moreover,it retains>99% current density after a 4000-s stability *** results suggest that vacuum annealing can substantially improve the pEC performance of Ag_(3)pO_(4) microcrystalline film photoanodes due to mitigated effects of native defects,improved light harvesting,and inhibited Ag_(3)pO_(4) decomposition during water oxidation reaction.
