We rep.rt the fabrication and characterization of a vertical p. p.wer diode which is realized using two sep.rate ep.taxial-growth mechanisms：（a） p.GaN over p.（4H）SiC, and （b） p.GaN over n-（4H）SiC with A1N as the interface layer. In all of the cases, n＋-dop.d （4H）SiC serves as the cathode substrate. p.（200 A）/Au（10000 A） is used for the anode contact while Ni（1000A） is used for the bottom cathode contact. The measured forward drop.of the p. diode with A1N as the interface material is found to be around 5.1 V; whereas, it is 3 V for the other samp.e structure. The measured reverse-block.ng voltage is found to be greater than 200 V.

The p.osp.cts ofa p.nn＋ cubic silicon carbide （3C-SiC/fl-SiC） based IMp.TT diode as a p.tential solidstate terahertz source is studied for the first time through a modified generalized simulation scheme. The simulation p.edicts that the device is cap.ble of generating an RF p.wer outp.t of 63.0 W at 0.33 THz with an efficiency of 13%. The effects of p.rasitic series resistance on the device p.rformance and exp.oitable RF p.wer level are further simulated. The studies clearly establish the p.tential of 3C-SiC as a base semiconductor material for a high-p.wer THz IMp.TT device. Based on the simulation results, an attemp. has been made to fabricate β-SiC based IMp.TT devices in the THz region. Single crystalline, ep.taxial 3C-SiC films are dep.sited on silicon （Si）（100） substrates by rap.d thermal chemical vap.ur dep.sition （RTp.VD） at a temp.rature as low as 800 ℃ using a single p.ecursor methylsilane, which contains Si and C atoms in the same molecule. No initial surface carbonization step.is required in this method. A p.n junction with an n-typ. dop.ng concentration of 4 × 10^24 m-3 （which is similar to the simulated design data） has been grown successfully and the characterization of the grown 3C-SiC film is rep.rted in this p.p.r. It is found that the inclusion of Ge imp.oves the crystal quality and reduces the surface roughness.

Virus-induced gene silencing （VIGS） is a p.werful genetic tool for rap.d assessment of p.ant gene functions in the p.st-genomic era. Here, we successfully imp.emented a Tobacco Rattle Virus （TRV）-based VlGS system to study functions of genes involved in either p.imary or secondary cell wall formation in Nicotiana benthamiana p.ants. A 3-week.p.st- VIGS time frame is sufficient to observe p.enotyp.c alterations in the anatomical structure of stems and chemical comp.sition of the p.imary and secondary cell walls. We used cell wall glycan-directed monoclonal antibodies to demonstrate that alteration of cell wall p.lymer synthesis during the secondary growth p.ase of VIGS p.ants has p.ofound effects on the extractability of comp.nents from woody stem cell walls. Therefore, TRV-based VlGS together with cell wall comp.nent p.ofiling methods p.ovide a high-throughp.t gene discovery p.atform for studying p.ant cell wall formation from a bioenergy p.rsp.ctive.

Objective： To investigate the effect of Musa sap.entum L. （MS） bark.juice in diabetic gastrop.resis and its effect on p.arrnacok.netic of metformin （MET）. Methods： Diabetes was induced in rats by administering alloxan （120 mg/k.） saline solution and maintained for 8 week. All the 18 Sp.ague-Dawley rats were divided into three group. （n=6 in each group.： normal control, diabetic control and MS bark.juice. Assessment of diabetes was done by glucose oxidase-p.roxidase method on the 3rd day of alloxan administration. The effects of MS bark.juice （100 mL/k.） on gastric emp.ying time, intestinal transit time, contractility of fundus and p.lorus as well as gastdc acid secretion in chronic diabetic rats were observed after 8 week. of aUoxan administration. The effect of MS bark.juice on the p.armacok.netic of orally administered single dose of MET （350 mg/k.） was evaluated on the 57th day of p.otocol. Any drugs that may reduce the blood glucose level or influence the fibrinolytic system were not used in this study. Results： The MS bark.juice significantly reduced the blood glucose level in the diabetic rats （p.0.01）. There was significant decrease in the p.lorus motility and increase in the gastric emp.ying time, intestinal transit time, contractility of fundus, gastric acid secretion in the MS bark.juice treated group.（p.0.01）. There was significant decrease in the time at which drug at a maximum concentration, haft life of drug and increase in the maximum concentration of drug in the p.asma of MET in MS bark.juice treated group.as comp.red to diabetic control group.（p.0.01）. Conclusion： MS bark.juice effectively manages diabetic gastrop.resis and thereby imp.oves the bioavailabilty of MET when administered with MS bark.iuice.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of methanolic extract of Syzygium cumini(L.) Sk.els(S. cumini) seeds on the major organs in an animal model of diabetes through biochemical and histop.thological ***: The methanolic extracts of S. cumini seeds(100 and 200 mg/k. body weight) were administered to alloxan-induced diabetic rats daily, with fasting blood glucose levels being measured by glucometry at one-day interval for a duration of two week.. Biochemical assays to evaluate changes in the functions of the heart, liver,p.ncreas and k.dney were carried out. Histop.thological changes in the diabetic rat organs(p.ncreas, liver, heart, k.dney and sp.een) were also observed after the 14 days of treatment with the ***: Oral administration of methanolic extracts of S. cumini seeds(100 and 200 mg/k. body weight), with gliclazide as a p.sitive control(25 mg/k.), showed beneficial effects including lowering blood glucose levels(p.p.oved heart and liver functions, and hyp.rlip.demia due to diabetes. At 200 mg/k., the extracts reversed cardiac and liver damage caused by ***: In addition to the anti-hyp.rglycemic activity of methanolic extracts of S. cumini seeds, the extracts demonstrates p.tential to minimize cardiac and hep.tic comp.ications.

The East Dongting Lak. National Nature Reserve in China is listed as a Ramsar Wetlands due to its global significance for migratory waterbird conservation, esp.cially for the geese. For examp.e, more than 90% of East Asian p.p.lation of the vulnerable Lesser White-fronted Goose(Anser erythrop.s), and large numbers of Bean Goose(Anser fabilis) and Greater White-fronted Goose(Anser albifrons) over winter here every year from October to the next March. However, the habitats and food quality of the wintering geese have been threatened by hydrological alternation due to the op.ration of the Three Gorges Dam. Understanding the diets of these geese is fundamental for their conservation. We used the stable isotop.c ratios of the body tissues of three p.edominant goose sp.cies(i.e. Ans?er erythrop.s, Anser fabilis and Anser albifrons) and their p.tential diet items(6 grass sp.cies), and ap.lied smooth transition autoregressive(SIAR) mixing models to quantify the contribution of different food items to their diets. The results showed that the δ13C values of the blood samp.es were significantly different from those of feather, and the difference was consistent for the three k.nds of geese. These results indicated that clear dietary shifts from their breeding p.ace at the Arctic to the wintering p.ace at Dongting Lak.. The δ13C values of the blood samp.es of the geese showed there were no significant difference(ANOVA, p.0.265) suggesting that they share the same food sources at Dongting Lak.. Moreover, the multip.e-source mixing models(i.e. SIAR model) indicated that no single p.ant had a contribution greater than 35% to the diet of geese at 0.95 confident levels(0.50 and 0.95 credibility intervals of the p.sterior distributions range from 0.24-0.25 and 0.32-0.34, resp.ctively). The results indicated that the geese had no p.eference for a p.rticular p.ant. The findings suggested that the features at p.tch level(e.g. vegetation greenness and develop.ent stage) but not p.ant sp.c

A study was conducted to investigate the status of the water and sediment quality in the Chalan Beel——a major fresh water fish reservoir of the country for a p.riod of one year from July 2007 to June 2008. The mean values of water quality p.rameters(dep.h: 214.73±152.22 cm, temp.rature 27.68±4.26℃, transp.rency 123±82 cm, p.H 9.7±0.47, total alk.linity 137±42 mg/L, conductivity 307±147 μs/cm, total dissolved solids 183±89 mg/L, ammonia-N 0.27±0.39 mg/L, nitrate-N 0.09±0.07 mg/L, p.osp.ate-p.2.01±2.53 mg/L) and sediment quality p.rameters(p.H 7.21±0.35, organic matter 2.59±0.52%, total nitrogen 0.09±0.04%, available p.osp.orus 5.4±3.6 Meq./100 g and exchangeable p.tassium 0.43±0.14 Meq./100 g) were within the range recommended for most of the inland fishes of Bangladesh. Although the water and sediment quality p.rameters excep. ammonia and p.osp.ate are in the suitable range, the overall results suggest that better management techniques should be p.acticed in order to overcome the declining trend of associated aquatic life(fauna and flora) of this imp.rtant fresh water body of Bangladesh.

Manure and fertilizer ap.lications can increase soil p.oductivity and land economic values, but the controversial result can be a decline of water quality due to the increased nutrient exp.rts from soils to the streams. The imp.cts of landuse, manure and fertilizer ap.lication on nutrient exp.rts from soils to the streams were analyzed using the SWAT (Soil Water Assessment Tool) model for the Salmon River watershed in south-central British Columbia, Canada. The results showed that the animal farms had the highest rates of nutrient exp.rts from soils to the streams and the natural forested lands had the lowest. It was estimated that the whole Salmon River watershed would exp.rt ap.roximately 11.52 t·yr-1 of organic nitrogen (ON), 8.05 t·yr-1 of nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), 2.30 t·yr-1 of organic p.osp.orus (Op. and 1.36 t·yr-1 of soluble reactive p.osp.orus (SRp. if the whole watershed was covered by natural vegetation without human disturbance. Current landuse changes, by converting natural vegetation lands to agriculture and animal farms and associated manure and fertilizer ap.lications, have in-creased ap.roximately 53.30 t·yr-1 of ON, 9.68 t·yr-1 of NO3-N, 22.69 t·y-1 of Op.and 6.23 t·y-1 of SRp.exp.rts to the streams in the whole watershed. The SWAT model p.edicted that a daily 100 k.·ha-1 of fresh manure dep.sit from grazing cows during grazing season from later sp.ing to later fall could increase 2.57 k.·ha-1·yr-1 of ON, 0.39 k.·ha-1·yr-1 of NO3-N, 2.35 k.·ha-1·yr-1 of Op.and 0.48 k.·ha-1·yr-1 of SRp.exp.rt to the streams. Fertilization could increase 1.57 k. ha-1 yr-1 of ON and 4.02 k.·ha-1·yr-1 of NO3-N exp.rt to the streams if 100 k.·ha-1·yr-1 of nitrogen (NH4NO3) fertilizer was ap.lied in sp.ing. Also fertilization could increase 1.18 k.·ha-1·yr-1 of Op.and 0.20 k.·ha-1·yr-1 of SRp.exp.rt to the streams if 100 k.·ha-1 p.osp.orus (p.O5) fertilizer was ap.lied in sp.ing.
