Minimally Invasive Surgical Approach for Spinal Canal Tumors—Technique Description and Experience from a Reference Center

Background: Spinal canal tumors are difficult to diagnose and treat. The traditional surgical approaches for attempting a complete excision of these lesions frequently involve big incisions and tissue dissection with high risk of postop instability and cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Also, there is a risk of neurological worsening, sometimes irreversible. Methods: We present our experience in a patient series with spinal canal tumors and describe the surgical approach with minimally invasive techniques (MIS). All of them were performed by the Neurosurgery team of the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio during the period of 2011-2016. Results: We reviewed forty patients with spinal canal tumors surgically treated with MIS techniques. 15 patients (37.5%) had Meningioma diagnosis (complete resection in 11 (73.3%), subtotal in 3 (20%) and biopsy in one patient), 10 patients (25%) with Schwannomas reached complete resection in 70% and subtotal in 30%. 5 patients had spinal cord metastasis, with complete resection in 4 patients (80%) and subtotal in 1 (20%). Other included ependymoma, astrocytoma, and miscellaneous. No patient has had cerebrospinal fluid leakage and no postoperative fusion has been required. Conclusions: The minimally invasive approach allowed complete tumors removal in a high number of patients and good postoperative results. These findings are similar and in some cases, better than the reported with traditional techniques. This MIS technique provides encouraging results. It requires a wide learning curve and a high degree of surgical experience.

Novel Sources of aus Rice for Zinc Deficiency Tolerance Identified Through Association Analysis Using High-Density SNP Array

Zinc （Zn） deficiency is a major soil constraint limiting rice crop growth and yield, yet the genetic control of tolerance mechanisms is still poorly understood. Here, we presented promising loci and candidate genes conferring tolerance to Zn deficiency and identified through association analysis using a 365 K single nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） marker array in a diverse aus （semi-wild type rice） panel. Tolerant accessions exhibited higher growth rate with relatively rare stress symptoms. Two loci on chromosomes 7 and 9 were strongly associated with plant vigor under Zn deficiency at a peak-stress stage. Based on previous microarray data from the same experimental plots, we highlighted four candidate genes whose expressions were accompanied by significant genotype and/or environment effects under Zn deficiency. Network-gene ontology supported known tolerance mechanisms, such as ascorbic acid pathway, and also suggested the importance of photosynthesis genes to overcome Zn deficiency symptoms.

Maintenance therapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer： a prime-time for change？

Lung cancer is the leading cancer in terms of incidence and mortality in China and its incidence in China is predicted to increase in the next 20 years.1 The majority of the lung cancer patients are diagnosed with advanced stage disease,for which chemotherapy or targeted therapies are the mainstay palliative *** the identification of single-driver mutations,like the epidermal growth factor receptor （EGFR） mutation,platinum-based doublet was the standard first line treatment for advanced stage nonsmall cell lung cancer （NSCLC） patients with a good performance status （PS）.However,patient prognosis remains poor and the modest treatment efficacy seems to have reached a plateau despite newer generation of platinum doublets.2 The recommendation for the duration of first line platinum doublet treatment is 4-6 cycles.3 The paradigm was based on the fact that a protracted course of chemotherapy did not prolong survival but introduced cumulative toxicities.4,5 The use of maintenance therapy （MT）,defined by Grossi et al6 as the prolongation of chemotherapy with the administration of additional drugs at the end of a defined number of initial chemotherapy cycles after achieving maximum tumor response,was not considered as a standard option in the past.

AIM: To compare the gene expression profile in a pair of HBV-infected ***: The gene expression profile was compared in a pair of HBV-infected ***: The twins displayed different disease outcomes. One acquired natural immunity against HBV,whereas the other became a chronic HBV carrier. Eightyeight and forty-six genes were found to be up- or downregulated in their PBMCs, respectively. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha-induced protein 1 (TNF-αIP1) that expressed at a higher level in the HBV-immune twins was identified and four pairs of siblings with HBV immunity by RTPCR. However, upon HBV core antigen stimulation,TNF-αIP1 was downregulated in PBMCs from subjects with immunity, whereas it was slightly upregulated in HBV carriers. Bioinformatics analysis revealed a K+channel tetramerization domain in TNF-αIP1 that shares a significant homology with some human, mouse, and C elegan ***: TNF-αIP1 may play a role in the innate immunity against HBV.

A thermodynamic study of the removal of HCI and H2S from syngas

Advanced integrated-gasification combined- cycle （IGCC） and integrated-gasification fuel cell （IFGC） systems require high-temperature sorbents that are capable of removing hydrogen chloride and hydrogen sulfide from coal derived gases to very low levels. HCI and H2S are highly reactive, corrosive, and toxic gases that must be removed to meet stringent environmental regulations, to protect power generation equipment and to control the emissions of contaminants. The thermodynamic behavior of 13 sorbents for the removal of HCI and H2S under various conditions including： initial toxic gas concentra- tion （1-10000 ppm）, operating pressure （0.1-11 Mpa）, temperature （300 K-1500 K）, and the presence of H2O were investigated. The correlation between HC1 and H2S was also examined. Thermodynamic calculations were carried out for the reactions of the 113 sorbents using a FaetSage 5.2 software package based on free energy minimization. The sorbents, Na2CO3, NaHCO3, K2CO3, and CaO are capable of completely removing chlorine at high temperatures （up to -1240 K） and at high pressures. Water vapor did not have any significant effects on the dechlorination capability of the sorbents. Nine of the sorbents namely; Cu20, Na2CO3, NaHCO3, K2CO3, CaO, ZnO, MnO, feo, and PbO, were determined to have great potential as desulfurization sorbents. Cu2Oand ZnO had the best performance in terms of the optimum operating temperature. The addition of water vapor to the reactant gas produces a slightly detrimental effi^ct on most of the sorbents, but feo exhibited the worst performance with a reduction in the maximum operating temperature of about 428K. The dechlorination performance of the alkali sorbents was not affected by the presence of H2S in the reactions. However, the desulfurization capability of some sorbents was greatly affected by the presence of HC1. Particularly, the performance of Cu2O was significantly reduced when HC1 was present, but the performance offeo improved remarkably. gather

Carbon-Coated Three-Dimensional MXene/Iron Selenide Ball with Core–Shell Structure for High-Performance Potassium-Ion Batteries

Two-dimensional(2D)MXenes are promising as electrode materials for energy storage,owing to their high electronic conductivity and low diffusion ***,similar to most 2D materials,MXene nanosheets easily restack during the electrode preparation,which degrades the electrochemical performance of MXene-based materials.A novel synthetic strategy is proposed for converting MXene into restacking-inhibited three-dimensional(3D)balls coated with iron selenides and *** strategy involves the preparation of Fe_(2)O_(3)@carbon/MXene microspheres via a facile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and subsequent selenization *** 3D structuring effectively prevents interlayer restacking,increases the surface area,and accelerates ion transport,while maintaining the attractive properties of ***,combining iron selenides and carbon with 3D MXene balls offers many more sites for ion storage and enhances the structural robustness of the composite *** resultant 3D structured microspheres exhibit a high reversible capacity of 410 mAh g^(−1) after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g^(−1) in potassium-ion batteries,corresponding to the capacity retention of 97% as calculated based on 100 *** at a high current density of 5.0 A g^(−1),the composite exhibits a discharge capacity of 169 mAh g^(−1).

Silicone oil-based solar-thermal fluids dispersed with PDMS-modified Fe3O4@graphene hybrid nanoparticles

One of the most challenging problems that limit the practical application of carbon-based photothermal nanofluids is their poor dispersion stability and tendency to form aggregation. Herein, by using Fe3O4@graphene hybrid nanoparticles as a model system, we proposed a new method to prepare stably dispersed silicone oilbased solar-thermal nanofluids that can operate at high temperatures than water-based fluids. The introduction of Fe3O4nanoparticles between graphene nanosheets not only physically increases the inter-plane distance of the graphene nanosheet but also provides numerous anchoring points for surface modification. Phosphate-terminated polydimethylsiloxane chains, which have high compatibility with the silicone oil base fluids and hightemperature stability, were synthesized and utilized to modify the Fe3O4nanoparticle surfaces. The attached chains create steric hindrance and effectively screen the strong inter-plane van der Waals attraction between graphene sheets. Dispersion stability of the nanofluids with different concentrations of surface-modified hybrid nanoparticles and heated under different temperatures was investigated. We have demonstrated that such fluids could maintain stable dispersion under a heating temperature up to 150 °C depending on the concentration of the hybrid nanoparticles. The resultant nanofluids maintained stable dispersion after repeated heating and were employed for consistent direct solar-thermal energy harvesting at 100 °C.
