AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of John Cunningham virus(JC virus) in a small cohort of patients with colon cancer and to assess its presence in hepatic ***: Nineteen consecutive patients with histologically diagnosed colon cancer were included in our study, together with ten subjects affected by histologically and serologically diagnosed hepatitis C virus infection. In the patients included in the colon cancer group, JC virus was searched for in the surgical specimen; in the control group, JC virus was searched for in the hepatic biopsy. The difference in the prevalence of JC virus in the hepatic biopsy between the two groups was assessed through the χ2 ***: Four out of 19 patients with colon cancer had a positive polymerase chain reaction(PCR) test for JC virus, and four had liver metastasis. Among the patients with liver metastasis, three out of four had a positive PCR test for JC virus in the surgical specimen and in the liver biopsy; the only patient with liver metastasis with a negative test for JC virus also presented a negative test for JC virus in the surgical specimen. In the control group of patients with hepatitis C infection, none of the ten patients presented JC virus infection in the hepatic biopsy. The difference between the two groups regarding JC virus infection was statistically significant(χ2 = 9.55, P = 0.002).CONCLUSION: JC virus may play a broader role than previously thought, and may be mechanistically involved in the late stages of these tumors.

Greetings on behalf of the new editorial team of Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts(JB&B).Launched at the University of New Brunswick(UNB)in Fredericton Canada in 2016 with the inaugural volume appearing in February 2016,JB&B has successfully published 95 articles in total,included in 3 volumes(12 issues).In spite of the limited space over the published issues,a broader spectrum of interesting topics has been covered to the best of the editors’*** November 2018,JB&B has been published jointly by Nanjing Forestry University(China)and UNB,and the journal has undergone some minor changes in personnel and *** the present time,the new editorial team is transitioning into its new responsibilities,whereas the scopes of the journal remain similar with very minor *** are very thankful to the authors,reviewers,editorial board members,the publishing staffs,last but not least,our readers for making JB&B a *** ask for your indulgence and encouragement while the transition is *** thanks are also due to the previous editorial board members who have made tremendous contributions to our journal.

The analysis of space-time surface deformation during earthquakes reveals the variable state of stress that occurs at deep crustal levels, and this information can be used to better understand the seismic cycle. Understanding the possible mechanisms that produce earthquake precursors is a key issue for earthquake prediction. In the last years, modern geodesy can map the degree of seismic coupling during the interseismic period, as well as the coseismic and postseismic slip for great earthquakes along subduction zones. Earthquakes usually occur due to mass transfer and consequent gravity variations, where these changes have been monitored for intraplate earthquakes by means of terrestrial gravity measurements. When stresses and correspondent rupture areas are large, affecting hundreds of thousands of square kilometres（as occurs in some segments along plate interface zones）, satellite gravimetry data become relevant. This is due to the higher spatial resolution of this type of data when compared to terrestrial data, and also due to their homogeneous precision and availability across the whole *** gravity missions as GOCE can map the Earth gravity field with unprecedented precision and resolution. We mapped geoid changes from two GOCE satellite models obtained by the direct approach,which combines data from other gravity missions as GRACE and LAGEOS regarding their best characteristics. The results show that the geoid height diminished from a year to five months before the main seismic event in the region where maximum slip occurred after the Pisagua Mw = 8.2 great megathrust earthquake. This diminution is interpreted as accelerated inland-directed interseismic mass transfer before the earthquake, coinciding with the intermediate degree of seismic coupling reported in the region. Ezetimibe is the f irst member of a new family of lipid- lowering drugs that inhibits uptake of dietary and bili- ary cholesterol. It was approved by the FDA in 2002 for hypercholesterolemia alone or in combination with statins. Its use has been spreading over the last years. Ezetimibe was considered a safe drug. We report a case of a woman who developed a serious hepatocellular drug-induced liver disease after 4 mo therapy with 10 mg daily of ezetimibe. After withdrawal of the drug, the patient recovered slowly. Ezetimibe may produce seri- ous toxic hepatitis and prompt withdrawal is mandatory in case of a signif icant abnormality in liver testing after beginning or during treatment with ezetimibe.

BACKGROUND:Hypertriglyceridemia is an unusual cause of acute pancreatitis and sometimes considered to be an *** study aimed to investigate the clinical and analytical features and the APOE genotypes in patients with acute pancreatitis and severe ***:We undertook a one-year,prospective study of patients with acute pancreatitis whose first laboratory analysis on admission to the emergency department included measurement of serum *** APOE genotype was determined and the patients answered an established questionnaire within the first 24 hours concerning their alcohol consumption,the presence of co-morbidities and any medications being *** patients’ progression,etiological diagnosis,hospital stay and clinical and radiological severity were all ***:Hypertriglyceridemia was responsible for 7 of 133 cases of pancreatitis (5%);the remaining cases were of biliary (53%),idiopathic (26%),alcoholic (11%) or other (5%) *** with these remaining cases,the patients with hypertriglyceridemia were significantly younger,had more relapses,and more often had diabetes *** usually consumed alcohol or consumed it excessively on the days before ***,the ε4 allele of the APOE gene was more common in this group (P<0.05).CONCLUSION:One of 20 episodes of acute pancreatitis is caused by hypertriglyceridemia and it is linked to genetic (ε4 allele) and comorbid factors such as diabetes and,especially,alcohol consumption.

To maintain genomic integrity and avoid diseases, the DNA-damage response(DDR) not only detects and repairs DNA lesions, but also contributes to the resistance to DNA-damaging *** the DDR plays a significant role in drug discovery using the principle of synthetic lethality. The incomplete current knowledge of the DDR encouraged us to develop new strategies to identify and study its components and pathways. Polycarcin V, belonging to the C-aryl glycoside natural products, is a light-activatable DNA-intercalating agent that causes DNA damage by forming a covalent [2+2]cycloadduct with thymine residue under 365–450 nm of light irradiation in a DNA-sequence-independent manner. Taking advantage of the light-activatable feature and temporal control of DDR, we designed and synthesized polycarcin V-based bifunctional chemical probes, including one that cross-links DNA to DNA-binding protein to explore the DDR induced by polycarcin V and uncover novel DNA–protein interactions. Utilizing this chemical probe and activity-based protein profiling-stable isotope labeling with amino acids in cell culture, we identified 311 DNA-binding protein candidates, including known DDR factors and additional proteins that may be of interest in discovering new biology. We validated our approach by showing that our probe could specifically cross-link proteins involved in nucleotide excision repair(NER) that repair bulky DNA adducts. Our studies showed that the [2+2] cycloadduct formed by polycarcin V could indeed be repaired by NER in vivo. As a DNA-damaging agent, polycarcin V or its drug-like derivative plus blue light showed promising properties for psoriasis treatment, suggesting that it may itself hold promise for clinic applications.

In contemporary entrepreneurial environment based on customer retention, the growth of the internet has pushed the most dynamic businesses to compete in the electronic market. In literature, there are many studies showing how a company＇s brand affects customer loyalty. Less attention has been paid to the relationship between e-commerce website loyalty and e-customer loyalty. This paper can be included in a stream of research that applies the construct of loyalty to e-commerce. Thus, this study aims to analyze, within the electronic market, the elements influencing and determining the trust and loyalty of the e-customers. This research consists of a descriptive study carried out utilizing the survey method. The population in this study includes 421 e-customers of Italian online multi-brand portals. The instrument of data gathering was a web-questionnaire and the data analysis was based on regression. Findings show a positive relationship between three factors （website technological level, e-service quality, and brand） and e-customer trust. Furthermore, the correlation, among the three variables, trust as mediating variable, and e-customer＇s loyalty, has been revealed. Therefore, it can be basically assumed that trust builds e-customer loyalty.

Inflammatory and oxidative stress in rotavirus infection

Rotaviruses are the single leading cause of life-threatening diarrhea affecting children under 5 years of age. Rotavirus entry into the host cell seems to occur by sequential interactions between virion proteins and various cell surface molecules. The entry mechanisms seem to involve the contribution of cellular molecules having binding, chaperoning and oxido-reducing activities. It appears to be that the receptor usage and tropism of rotaviruses is determined by the species, cell line and rotavirus strain. Rotaviruses have evolved functions which can antagonize the host innate immune response, whereas are able to induce endoplasmic reticulum(ER) stress, oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling. A networking between ER stress, inflammation and oxidative stress is suggested, in which release of calcium from the ER increases the generation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species(ROS) leading to toxic accumulation of ROS within ER and mitochondria. Sustained ER stress potentially stimulates inflammatory response through unfolded protein response pathways. However, the detailed characterization of the molecular mechanisms underpinning these rotavirus-induced stressful conditions is still lacking. The signaling events triggered by host recognition of virusassociated molecular patterns offers an opportunity for the development of novel therapeutic strategies aimed at interfering with rotavirus infection. The use of N-acetylcysteine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and PPARγ agonists to inhibit rotavirus infection opens a new way for treating the rotavirus-induced diarrhea and complementing vaccines.
