Antimicrobial Agents from Selected medicinal Plants in Libya

Objective： To test the in vitro antimicrobial efficacy of water and methanol extracts of 23 plant species that are commonly used in Libyan folk medicine. methods： The antimicrobial activity was determined using the well-diffusion method. Four test microorganisms were used namely, Escherichia coil, Salmonella species, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. The minimum inhibitory concentration （mIC） was determined for the high biologically active crude plant extracts. Results： Among 23 medicinal plants used in the study, only 5 methanolic extracts [Rosmarinus offcinalis L., Carduus marianium L., Lantana camara L., Rhus tripartite （ueria） Grande, and Thymus capitatus （L.） Hoffm （link）] showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella species, while 22 methanolic and aqueous extracts showed moderate to weak antimicrobial activity on all tested organisms. However 19 of the extracts showed no activity at all against Gram -ve and Gram ＋ve microorganisms. mIC was found to be 1.25 mg/mL （Thymus capitatus）, 3 mg/mL （Rhus tripartite）, 4 mg/mL （Carduus marianium）, 5 mg/mL （Rosamarinus officinalis） and 5 mg/mL （Lantana camara）, respectively. Condusions： The present results revealed that, crude methanolic extracts of the investigated Libyan folk medicinal plants exhibited mild to high in vitro antibactedal activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms.

An automated geo-spatial correction framework for transportation

In this paper, we present a framework to validate and to correct the location information in crash reports. The proposed system is composed of several modules: creation of intersection network and pre-processing, validation, snapping, updating, and *** proposed system utilizes GPS coordinates(latitude/longitude), primary and reference road names, primary direction, and distance to the reference road. The algorithm starts at an initial GPS coordinate provided in the crash report. Additional location information is utilized in case this coordinate does not satisfy certain criteria. After verification of the road names, the correct snapping location is determined using the primary direction and primary distance information. At the final stage, the attributes in the crash data are retrieved from the base map given the snapping point. We tested the proposed system by three different test data sets. The number of correctly identified matches and the average snapping error are calculated for assessment. The experiments show that the proposed framework is capable of geocoding the crashes up to 98% accuracy with the average of 37 feet of snapping error and 64% of the matching records have less than snapping error of 1 foot. However, we observed that considering highly specific cases as an outlier, the snapping error significantly drops. We discuss these cases in detail and propose a remedy as a future work.

The protection of Thymus vulgaris leaves alcoholic extract against hepatotoxicity of alcohol in rats

Cooperative communication through energy harvested relays in Cognitive Internet of Things(CIoT)has been envisioned as a promising solution to support massive connectivity of Cognitive Radio(CR)based IoT devices and to achieve maximal energy and spectral efficiency in upcoming wireless *** this work,a cooperative CIoT system is contemplated,in which a source acts as a satellite,communicating with multiple CIoT devices over numerous *** Aerial Vehicles(UAVs)are used as relays,which are equipped with onboard Energy Harvesting(EH)*** adopted a Power Splitting(PS)method for EH at relays,which are harvested from the Radio frequency(RF)*** conjunction with this,the Decode and Forward(DF)relaying strategy is used at UAV relays to transmit the messages from the satellite source to the CIoT *** developed a multi-Objective Optimization(mOO)framework for joint optimization of source power allocation,CIoT device selection,UAV relay assignment,and PS ratio *** formulated three objectives:maximizing the sum rate and the number of admitted CIoT in the network and minimizing the carbon dioxide *** mOO formulation is a mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming(mINLP)problem,which is challenging to *** address the joint optimization problem for an epsilon optimal solution,an Outer Approximation Algorithm(OAA)is proposed with reduced *** simulation results show that the proposed OAA is superior in terms of CIoT device selection and network utility maximization when compared to those obtained using the Nonlinear Optimization with mesh Adaptive Direct-search(NOmAD)algorithm.

Congenital diarrhea in a newborn infant: A case report

BACKGROUND microvillus inclusion disease(mVID)is a rare autosomal recessive cause of severe congenital diarrhea with significant morbidity and *** treatment involves bowel *** diagnosis of this condition can be challenging and a few genetic panels are available for the identification of the most common *** present the case of an infant with mVID due to a mutation not reported in the literature *** SUmmARY We report the case of an infant transferred to our institution with severe diarrhea of unknown etiology,failure to thrive,and significant metabolic *** extensive work-up including stool studies for common gastrointestinal pathogens,abdominal ultrasound,esophagogastroduodenoscopy with duodenal biopsy and flexible sigmoidoscopy failed to reveal a *** dietary and formula regimens were introduced but all resulted in voluminous *** remained on total parenteral nutrition(TPN)for the duration of her hospital *** testing was done and she was subsequently found to have a novel mutation in the mYO5B gene[homozygous mutation for mYO5B c.1462del,p.(Ile488Leufs*93)]giving us the diagnosis of *** remains on TPN while awaiting bowel transplant at the time of the compilation of this case *** We report a novel mutation involved in mVID and highlight the importance of considering this disease when faced with a newborn presenting with life threatening *** the time of this publication,232 allelic variations of this gene(mIm#606540)exist in National Center for Biotechnology Information’s *** patient’s mutation has not been reported in literature as a cause of mVID.

Extension of Direct Citation model Using In-Text Citations

Citations based relevant research paper recommendations can be generated primarily with the assistance of three citation models:(1)Bibliographic Coupling,(2)Co-Citation,and(3)Direct *** of new scholarly articles are published every *** flux of scientific information has made it a challenging task to devise techniques that could help researchers to find the most relevant research papers for the paper at *** this study,we have deployed an in-text citation analysis that extends the Direct Citation model to discover the nature of the relationship degree-ofrelevancy among scientific *** this purpose,the relationship between citing and cited articles is categorized into three categories:weak,medium,and *** an experiment,around 5,000 research papers were crawled from the *** research papers were parsed for the identification of in-text citation ***,0.1 million references of those articles were extracted,and their in-text citation frequencies were computed.A comprehensive benchmark dataset was established based on the user ***,the results were validated with the help of Least Square Approximation by Quadratic Polynomial *** was found that degreeof-relevancy between scientific papers is a quadratic increasing/decreasing polynomial with respect to-increase/decrease in the in-text citation frequencies of a cited ***,the results of the proposed model were compared with state-of-the-art techniques by utilizing a well-known measure,known as the normalized Discount Cumulative Gain(nDCG).The proposed method received an nDCG score of 0.89,whereas the state-of-the-art models such as the Content,Bibliographic-coupling,and metadata-based models were able to acquire the nDCG values of 0.65,0.54,and 0.51 *** results indicate that the proposed mechanism may be applied in future information retrieval systems for better results.

Ensemble and optimized hybrid algorithms through Runge Kutta optimizer for sewer sediment transport modeling using a data pre-processing approach

Uncontrolled sediment deposition in drainage and sewer systems raises unexpected maintenance *** this end,implementation of an accurate model relying on effective parameters involved is a reliable *** this study,three machine learning techniques,namely extreme learning machine(ELm),multilayer perceptron neural network(mLPNN),and m5P model tree(m5PmT);and three optimization approaches of Runge Kutta(RUN),genetic algorithm(GA),and particle swarm optimization(PSO) are applied for *** optimization and ensemble hybridization approaches are applied in the modeling *** the case of hybrid optimized models,the ELm and mLPNN models are hybridized with RUN,GA,and PSO algorithms to develop six hybrid models of ELm-RUN,ELm-GA,ELmPSO,mLPNN-RUN,mLPNN-GA,and *** hybrid models are developed through coupling the ELm and mLPNN models with the m5PmT *** data pre-processing approach is applied to find the best randomness characteristic of the utilized *** illustrate that the RUNbased hybrid models outperform the GA-and PSO-based *** the mLPNN-RUN and mLPNN-m5PmT hybrid models generate better results than their alternatives,mLPNN-m5PmT slightly outperforms mLPNN-RUN model with a coefficient of determination of 0.84 and a root mean square error of *** current study shows the superiority of the ensemble-based approach to the optimization *** investigation is needed by considering alternative optimization techniques to enhance sediment transport modeling.

Bio-fabrication of liver cancer stem cells and testing of gemcitabine

Aim:Cancer stem cells are cell populations that are essential in drug resistance and cancer *** liver cancer cells exhibit the characteristics of cancer stem cells,and it is crucial to study the activities and interactions of drugs in these ***7 is a human liver cancer cell with stem cell biomarkers and is used with induced pluripotent stem cells to form various cancer organoids through encapsulation *** to their ease of use without animal testing,bio-fabrication studies of cell-encapsulated models have gained importance in the pharmaceutical industry in recent *** study aimed to biofabricate Huh7 human liver cancer stem cells by alginate encapsulation and test gemcitabine’s ***:Huh7 cells were encapsulated with alginate(0.8%w/v)and fibronectin,and their viability was evaluated with 3.2μm gemcitabine on days 1,3,6,9,and ***,gene expressions of stem cell markers CD90 and AFP were evaluated in encapsulated Huh7 cells by *** addition,IL-6 secretion in the cell medium was measured by ELISA for the tumor ***:Encapsulation of Huh7 cells was found to maintain their viability and stem cell properties for up to 12 *** addition,alginate-encapsulated Huh7 cells were bio-fabricated to demonstrate long-term gemcitabine *** the effect of the gemcitabine was evaluated in alginate-encapsulated Huh7 cells,CD90 and AFP mRNA levels were significantly reduced in the cells and IL-6 secretion was decreased in the tumor ***:This study demonstrated that bio-fabrication of alginate-encapsulated Huh7 cells is a novel approach for long-term drug testing in liver cancer ***-fabricated alginate-encapsulated cancer stem cells may be a cheaper and faster method for the testing of many drugs.
