Low prevalence of epilepsy and onchocerciasis after more than 20 years of ivermectin treatment in the Imo River Basin in Nigeria

Background:High epilepsy prevalence and incidence have been reported in areas with high onchocerciasis *** findings suggest that proper community-directed treatment with ivermectin(CDTI)is potentially able to prevent onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy(OAE).We assessed the epilepsy prevalence and onchocerciasis transmission in two Nigerian villages following more than 20 years of ***:A cross-sectional door-to-door survey was performed in two villages in the Imo River Basin reported to be mesoendomic for onchocerciasis(Umuoparaodu and Umuezeala).Individuals were screened for epilepsy using a validated 5-item *** suspected to have epilepsy were examined by a neurologist or a physician with training in epilepsy for *** was investigated via skin snip microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests for Ov16 *** were compared with previous findings from the Imo river ***:A total of 843 individuals from 257 households in the two villages were *** detected four persons with epilepsy(PWE)giving a crude epilepsy prevalence of 0.5%.This finding differs from observations reported 14 years ago which showed an epilepsy prevalence of 2.8%in the neighbouring village of Umulolo(P=0.0001),and 1.2%from 13 villages in the Imo river basin(P=0.07).The seroprevalence of Ov16 antibodies was found to be 0%.Only 4.6%of skin snips were positive compared to 26.8%in previous surveys(P<0.0001).Ivermectin mass distribution coverage in the study sites in 2017 was 79.7%.Conclusions:A low epilepsy and onchocerciasis prevalence was observed following more than 20 years of CDTI in the Imo River *** of Ov16 antibodies indicates minimal transmission of *** results contrast with observations from areas of high onchocerciasis transmission,where epilepsy prevalence and incidence remain *** from this study suggest that sustained efforts could eventually achieve elimination of onch

Dietary Fibre and Fatty Acid Evaluation of Boiled, Roasted, Germinated and Fermented Breadnut (Ukwa bekee) Seed Flours

Evaluation of dietary fiber and fatty acid composition of boiled, roasted, fermented and germinated breadnut seed flour was investigated. The seeds were dehulled and washed. It was divided into four equal parts for different processing techniques: boiled, roasted, germinated and fermented. They were analyzed for dietary fibre and fatty acid composition using standard methods. Data were subjected to statistical analysis using Statistical Product for Service Solution (SPSS) version 23.0. Values were expressed as means and standard deviation, Duncan multiple range test was used in separating the means at 95% confidence interval. Dietary fibre composition showed that breadnut seed flours range from 4.94%(fermented breadnut seed flour) to 5.42%(roasted breadnut seed flour). Fatty acid profile showed that breadnut seed flours contain a greater amount of non-essential fatty acids which were highly significant (p < 0.05) in oleic acid (57.93%) for roasted breadnut seed flour followed by linoleic acid (25.76%) in fermented breadnut flour. Stearic acid was the only prominent non-essential fatty acid in the breadnut seed flour and ranged from 4.40%(fermented breadnut seed flour) to 6.27%(germinated breadnut seed flour). The study revealed that all the processed breadnut seed flours have appreciable quantities of dietary fibre and essential fatty acids than non-essential fatty acids. Breadnut seed should be recommended in wheat substitution in bakery industry and culinary uses. It is also recommended for weight loss program.

Pancreatic cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality *** investigating effective management strategies for pancreatic cancer is *** E,consisting of both tocopherol and tocotrienol,has demonstrated debatable effects on pancreatic cancer ***,this scoping review aims to summarize the effects of vitamin E on pancreatic *** October 2022,a literature search was conducted using PubMed and Scopus since their *** studies on the effects of vitamin E on pancreatic cancer,including cell cultures,animal models and human clinical trials,were considered for this *** literature search found 75 articles on this topic,but only 24 articles met the inclusion *** available evidence showed that vitamin E modulated proliferation,cell death,angiogenesis,metastasis and inflammation in pancreatic cancer ***,the safety and bioavailability concerns remain to be answered with more extensive preclinical and clinical *** in-depth analysis is necessary to investigate further the role of vitamin E in the management of pancreatic cancers.

Black women have always been likened to being a less physically active group compared to women of other races/ethnicity,with reports of a high prevalence of obesity and other cardiometabolic diseases among *** purpose of this study is to examine the health benefits of physical activity on women of color,as well as barriers that inhibit their *** searched PubMed and Web of Science databases for relevant research *** articles were:Published in the English Language from 2011 to February 2022;conducted predominantly on black women,African women,or African American *** were identified,screened,and data extracted following the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis(PRISMA)*** electronic search produced 2043 articles,and 33 articles were reviewed after meeting the inclusion criteria.13 articles focused on the benefits of physical activity while 20 articles addressed the barriers to physical *** was found that physical activity has various benefits for black women participants but they are being hindered from participation by some *** factors were grouped into four themes,namely Individual/Intrapersonal barriers,Socio-economic barriers,Social barriers,and Environmental *** studies have examined the benefits and barriers of physical activity among women of different racial and ethnic backgrounds,but there have been very few studies of African women,with the majority focusing on one geographical *** addition to exploring these benefits and barriers,this review offers recommendations on the areas researchers should focus on to promote physical activity in this population.

Objective:To determine the effect of Trypanosoma brucei(***)on blood sugar level of infected ***:The experiment was done with 42 albino rats grouped into 3 groups of 14 members *** A was uninfected(control group),Group B was infected with *** and treated with diminazene aceturate,and Group C was infected with *** and treated with imidocarb *** samples were collected from the media canthus of the experimental rats on Days 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 for the assessment of change in blood sugar *** blood sugar levels were determined with a glucometer(Accu-chek active serial ***:10023338).Results:By 4 to 5 days post infection,there was a significant increase(P0.05)was observed in the groups when compared with the control group till Day 12 of the ***:*** caused a significant increase in blood sugar of infected rats.

浙江是一个地质灾害频发的省。滑坡地质灾害频发,对全省经济建设和人民群众生命财产安全造成重大危害。因此,滑坡灾害的监测预警工作极为重要。开发新的滑坡灾害监测预警技术是地质灾害防治领域中的热点问题。选取浙江地区的典型岩石试样,开展岩石单轴压缩、岩桥剪切以及岩体结构面剪切等多种加载条件下的室内试验,对不同加载条件下岩石破裂产生的次声波信号进行采集和处理分析,以研究浙江地区典型岩石发生不同形式破坏时产生的次声波信号特征,并以此为基础初步提出浙江地区岩质滑坡灾害的次声波监测预警关键技术。主要得到以下结论:(1)不同岩性的岩石在单轴压缩、岩桥剪切及结构面剪切过程中均出现多次大于本底信号峰值的次声波现象,岩石单轴抗压强度和加载历时不同主要与岩性及岩样的完整程度有关。灰岩、凝灰岩、砂岩及玄武岩均表现出在竖向应力接近峰值时次声波幅值逐渐达到最大,产生的次声波信号主频范围主要集中于1～8Hz。次声波信号频率特征与岩性及加载方式之间均不存在明显的相关性。(2)不同岩性的岩石在单轴压缩、岩桥剪切及结构面剪切过程中,表现出累计振铃计数在逐渐增加,并在应力达到峰值之前,累计振铃数显著增加。累计振铃计数特征与岩性及加载方式之间未发现存在明显的相关性。(3)基于四种典型岩石在单轴压缩、岩桥剪切及结构面剪切等多种不同岩体破坏条件下的次声波特征,提出浙江地区岩质滑坡灾害监测预警系统需达到总体设计目标,包括(1)次声特征频率范围为1Hz～8Hz;(2)次声传感器具有高灵敏度;(3)硬件系统需设带通滤波功能;(4)可实时直观显示并查看监测数据;(5)可完成长期监测下的数据管理工作。同时完成了岩质滑坡次声监测预警硬件系统和软件系统的总体架构方案设计,其中硬件系统主要由声波传感器、次声数据采集模块、GPRS通信模块、报警模块和计算机远程监控系统组成,而软件系统主要由数据处理单元和数据存储单元组成,以实现对所采集信号的分析处理以及对原始监测数据的存储备份。研究成果将为浙江省岩性滑坡灾害的防治提供有力的技术支持,也将提高该地区滑坡灾害的预警和预报水平。

Effect of experimental single Ancylostoma caninum and mixed infections of Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma congolense on the humoural immune response to anti-rabies vaccination in dogs

Objective:To determine the effect of Ancylostoma caninum(***)and trypanosome parasites on the immune response to vaccination in dogs in endemic ***:Sixteen dogs for the experiment were grouped into 4 of 4 members *** I was the uninfected control one,and GPII was infected with ***;GPIII was infected with ***/Trypanosoma congolense(***),and GPIV was infected with Trypanosoma brucei(***)/*** dogs were first vaccinated with antirabies vaccine before infecting GPII,GPIII and GPIV with *** which were done 4 weeks after *** 2-week post-vaccination,trypanosome parasites were superimposed on both GPIII and GPIV.A secondary vaccination was given to GPI,GPII,GPIII,and GPIV by Week 12 of the experiment(4 weeks post treatment).Results:The prepatent period was(3.00±1.40)days,in the conjunct infection of ***/*** was(9.00±1.10)days,in conjunct ***/*** prepatent period of *** was(14.0±2.0)days in the single *** group and(13.0±1.0)days in the conjunct trypanosome/*** the 1st week after vaccination,the antibody titer in all the vaccinated groups(GPI,GPII,GPIII,and GPIV)significantly increased(P<0.05)and peaked at the 3rd week after *** infections,there were marked significant decreases(P<0.05)in the antibody production against rabies in GPII,GPIII and *** significant decrease(P<0.05)in antibody titer was highest in the conjunct groups(GPIII and GPIV)compared to the single infection(GPII).Treatment with diminazene aceturate and mebendazole did not significantly improve antibody response in the dogs.A secondary vaccination administered at the 12th week after the primary vaccination significantly increased(P<0.05)the antibody titer with a peak at the 3rd week after the secondary ***:It was therefore concluded that ***,*** and *** induced immunosuppression in antirabies vaccination in dogs.

Assessment of Lipid Profile and Atherogenic Indexes of Hepatitis B Virus Carriers amongst Volunteer Blood Donors in Nigeria

Introduction: Infectious agents such as hepatitis B virus can constitute major public health problems as ii affects the liver resulting into inflammatory conditions. This study was designed to assess plasma lipid profile and atherogenic indexes of hepatitis B virus carriers among voluntary blood donors in North Central, North East and South-South regions of Nigeria. Materials & Methods: A total of 183 blood samples were collected from subjects in North Central consisting of 137 males and 46 females;176 blood samples from the North East consisting of 129 males and 47 females and 173 blood samples from subjects in South-South region consisting of 123 males and 50 females. The mean ages of the subjects were 34.89 ± 9.19 years, 39.81 ± 9.60 years and 39.92 ± 9.27 years for North Central, North East and South-South regions respectively. The specimens were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All specimens were analyzed for total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and triglycerides with standard biochemical procedures. The atherogenic indexes were computed using established ratios. The data was analyzed statistically and p-value Results: The mean values of total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides did not vary significantly (p > 0.05) between the hepatitis B positive carriers and hepatitis B negative subjects across the geo-political zones studied although in some of the parameters the values were on the high normal range between the male and female subjects. The AIP and CRR-1 and CRR-11 of the blood donors in the zones in both the HBsAg positive and negative subjects were within the reference range. The atherogenic coefficient value of >3.0 was obtained for some HBsAg negative and positive subjects in some of the zones. Conclusion: The findings thus indicate that asymptomatic HBV infection may be associated with low risk of dyslipidaemia in the population.
