Douglas-fir(Pseudotsuga menziesii(Mirb.)Franco),one of the most commercially important tree species in western North America and one of the most valuable timber trees worldwide,was introduced to Europe in *** became a major species for aff orestation in Western Europe after WWII,currently grows in 35 countries on over 0.83 million ha and is one of the most widespread nonnative tree species across the continent.A lower sensitivity to drought makes Douglas-fi r a potential alternative to the more drought-sensitive Norway spruce so its importance in Europe is expected to increase in the *** is one of the fastest growing conifer species cultivated in Europe,with the largest reported dimensions of 2.3 m in diameter and 67.5 m in *** stands have high productivity(up to 20 m 3 ha−1 a−1)and production(over 1000 m 3 ha−1).The species is generally regenerated by planting(initial stocking density from less than 1000 seedlings ha−1 to more than 4000 ha−1),using seedlings of European provenance derived from seed orchards or certifi ed seed *** the range of end-uses of its wood is very wide,the rotation period of Douglas-fi r is highly variable and ranges between 40 and 120 *** the production of large-sized,knotfree timber is targeted,thinnings are always coupled with pruning up to 6 *** is an increasing interest in growing Douglas-fi r in mixtures and managing stands through close-to-nature silviculture,but the species’intermediate shade tolerance means that it is best managed through group selection or shelterwood systems.

Black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia L.),a species native to the eastern North America,was introduced to Europe probably in 1601 and currently extends over2.3×10~6 *** has become naturalized in all sub-Mediterranean and temperate regions rivaling Populus *** the second most planted broadleaved tree species worldwide after Eucalyptus *** wide-spreading planting is because black locust is an important multipurpose species,producing wood,fodder,and a source of honey as well as bio-oil and *** is also important for carbon sequestration,soil stabilization and re-vegetation of landfills,mining areas and wastelands,in biotherapy and *** Europe,black locust is drought tolerant so grows in areas with annual precipitation as low as 500-550 *** tolerates dry,nutrient poor soils but grows best on deep,nutrient-rich,well-drained *** is a fast-growing tree and the height,diameter and volume growth peak before the age of *** mostly regenerates vegetatively by root suckers under a simple coppice system,which is considered the most cost-effective management *** also regenerates,but less frequently,by stool *** early silviculture in production forests includes release cutting to promote root suckers rather than stool shoots,and cleaning-respacing to remove low-quality stems,reduce the number of shoots per stool,and adjust spacing between root *** addition,early,moderate and frequent thinning as well as limited pruning are carried out focusing on crop *** species is regarded as invasive in several European countries and its range here is expected to expand under predicted climate changes.

Melanoma is a highly aggressive tumor and almost always fatal when ***,we discuss recent findings on the mechanisms of resistance of human cutaneous *** achieve a precision medicine approach,the heterogeneity and plasticity of tumor cells are two crucial aspects to be investigated in *** fact,to understand the mechanisms that cells use to acquire a resistant phenotype after chemotherapy or how resistant cells inside the tumor are selected,it is the most important issue for a successful *** new therapeutic strategies are trying to go in this direction,we discuss here the state of the art of the research and the clinical impact of these *** also discuss and suggest future research directions to develop approaches able to define the best concentration and time of exposure of the drug or the cocktails of drugs for each specific patient based on his/her biological features.

Background:Tenodesis of the long head of the biceps(LHB)is commonly undertaken during arthroscopic rotator cuff *** assessed the clinical and structural outcomes after high arthroscopic tenodesis(HAT)or mini-open subpectoral tenodesis(ST).We hypothesized that the clinical and structural results after HAT and ST are ***:We included 40 patients with rotator cuff tear and LHB *** patients(7 women and 13 men;mean age:57.9 years;range:56-63 years)were treated using HAT,and 20 patients(8 women and 12 men;mean age:58.5 years;range:55-64 years)were treated using *** evaluation was performed preoperatively and at 6 weeks,6 months,and 1 year after surgery,using the Constant Murley Score and Simple Shoulder Test scores;the LHB was evaluated using the LHB score.A Visual Analogue Scale was administered to all patients preoperatively and 2 days after ***:The postoperative total and pain subscale’s Constant scores were significantly higher in the ST ***,2 LHB score values were significantly different between the *** postoperative LHB total score in the ST and HAT groups averaged 86.9±4.1(mean±SD)points and 73.3±6.4 points,*** Pain/Cramps subscale in the ST and HAT groups averaged 47.1±5.9 and 33.2±4.6 points,*** 2 groups showed no difference in Visual Analogue Scale values(5.5 in the HAT group;5.8 in the ST group)*** patient in the HAT group reported a secondary onset of Popeye ***:Both high arthroscopic and mini-open ST of the LHB tendon produced reliably good functional results,but the ST group was associated with better postoperative clinical outcomes.

Thoughts about cancer stem cells in solid tumors

Cancer chemotherapy efficacy is frequently impaired by either intrinsic or acquired tumor resistance.A fundamental problem in cancer research is identifying the cell type that is capable of sustaining neoplastic growth and its origin from normal tissue *** recent years,the cancer stem cell(CSC) theory has changed the classical view of tumor growth and therefore the therapeutic *** intrinsic and acquired resistance of cancer stem/progenitor cells to current clinical treatments represents a major challenge in treating and curing the most aggressive and metastatic *** the other hand,the identification of CSCs in vivo and in vitro relies on specific surface markers that should allow the sorting cancer cells into phenotypically distinct *** the present review,recent papers published on CSCs in solid tumors(breast,prostate,brain and melanoma) are discussed,highlighting critical points such as the choice of markers to sort CSCs and mouse models to demonstrate that CSCs are able to replicate the original tumor.A discussion of the possible role of aldehyde dehydrogenase and CXCR6 biomarkers as signaling molecules in CSCs and normal stem cells is also *** author believes that efforts have to be made to investigate the functional and biological properties of putative CSCs in *** diagnostic/prognostic tools to follow cancer development is also a *** this connection it would be useful to develop a multidisciplinary approach combining mathematics,physics and biology which merges experimental approaches and *** models alone are probably unable to resolve the problem completely.

Solids that are also liquids: elastic tensors of superionic materials

Superionics are fascinating materials displaying both solid- and liquid-like characteristics: as solids, they respond elastically to shearstress;as liquids, they display fast-ion diffusion at normal conditions. In addition to such scientific interest, superionics aretechnologically relevant for energy, electronics, and sensing applications. Characterizing and understanding their elastic propertiesis, e.g., urgently needed to address their feasibility as solid-state electrolytes in all-solid-state batteries. However, static approachesto elasticity assume well-defined reference positions around which atoms vibrate, in contrast with the quasi-liquid motion of themobile ions in fast ionic conductors. Here, we derive the elastic tensors of superionics from ensemble fluctuations in the isobaric-isothermal ensemble, exploiting extensive Car-Parrinello simulations. We apply this approach to paradigmatic Li-ion conductors,and complement with a block analysis to compute statistical errors. Static approaches sampled over the trajectories oftenoverestimate the response, highlighting the importance of a dynamical treatment in determining elastic tensors in superionics.

General invariance and equilibrium conditions for lattice dynamics in 1D,2D,and 3D materials

The long-wavelength behavior of vibrational modes plays a central role in carrier transport,phonon-assisted optical properties,superconductivity,and thermomechanical and thermoelectric properties of ***,we present general invariance and equilibrium conditions of the lattice potential;these allow to recover the quadratic dispersions of flexural phonons in low-dimensional materials,in agreement with the phenomenological model for long-wavelength bending *** also prove that for any low-dimensional material the bending modes can have a purely out-of-plane polarization in the vacuum direction and a quadratic dispersion in the long-wavelength *** addition,we propose an effective approach to treat invariance conditions in crystals with non-vanishing Born effective charges where the long-range dipole-dipole interactions induce a contribution to the lattice potential and stress *** approach is successfully applied to the phonon dispersions of 158 two-dimensional materials,highlighting its critical relevance in the study of phonon-mediated properties of low-dimensional materials.

Thermal conductivity of glasses: first-principles theory and applications

Predicting the thermal conductivity of glasses from first principles has hitherto been a very complex *** established Allen-Feldman and Green-Kubo approaches employ approximations with limited validity—the former neglects anharmonicity,the latter misses the quantum Bose-Einstein statistics of vibrations—and require atomistic models that are very challenging for first-principles ***,we present a protocol to determine from first principles the thermal conductivityκ(T)of glasses above the plateau(i.e.,above the temperature-independent region appearing almost without exceptions in theκ(T)of all glasses at cryogenic temperatures).The protocol combines the Wigner formulation of thermal transport with convergence-acceleration techniques,and accounts comprehensively for the effects of structural disorder,anharmonicity,and Bose-Einstein *** validate this approach in vitreous silica,showing that models containing less than 200 atoms can already reproduceκ(T)in the macroscopic *** discuss the effects of anharmonicity and the mechanisms determining the trend ofκ(T)at high temperature,reproducing experiments at temperatures where radiative effects remain negligible.
