Patients with non-viral liver disease have a greater tumor burden and less curative treatment options when diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM To assess the impact of underlying liver disease etiology on the presenting features and outcomes in a large cohort of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). METHODS A prospective database of all patients with HCC was established from 1998 to March 2012. One thousand and seventy-eight patients were categorized into three groups, based on the etiology of their liver disease: hepatitis B virus(HBV), hepatitis C virus(HCV) and non-viral liver disease(NVLD). Overall survival was determined by Kaplan Meier analysis to time of death or last *** HCC patients with HCV(85%) were more likely to be diagnosed as part of a surveillance program, compared to HBV or NVLD(both 71%)(P < 0.001). Patients with NVLD were more likely to receive best supportive care(29%) compared to those with HBV(21%) or HCV(20%)(P < 0.02). Twelve percent of NVLD and 13% of HBV patients underwent liver transplantation compared to 21% of HCV patients(P = 0.001). Median survival from presentation was lowest in NVLD(1.7 years) when compared to HBV(2.8 years) and HCV(2.6 years)(P < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, independent predictors of survival included Child Turcotte Pugh score, size of dominant lesion, absence of vascular invasion, and management with surgical resection or liver transplantation. Patient age and the etiology of the underlying liver disease were not independent predictors of survival CONCLUSION Patients with NVLD and HCC were less likely to be enrolled in a HCC surveillance program and are less likely to have curative therapies such as liver resection and transplantation after diagnosis with HCC, when compared to patients with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

1 Introduction Transcatheter aortic valve implantation （TAVI） constitutes an established treatment in inoperable or high perioperative risk patients with severe aortic stenosis, demonstrating similar mortality rates （at 30 days and 1 year） with surgical aortic valve replacement （SAVR）. Various complications have been reported during TAVI, weeks or months post procedure. The most frequent causes of transcatheter heart valve （THV） failure are paravalvular regurgitation, infective endocarditis （IE）, thrombosis and late valve Migration.

SDS-PAGE analysis of whole cell protein and outer memrbane protein patterns of clinical isolates of Burkholderia pseudomallei

Objective:To investigate the banding patterns of whole cell protein(WCP) and outer membrane protein (OMP) of Burkholderia pseudomallei(***) in clinical isolates from patients with melioidosis. Methods:WCP and OMP of of *** in 50 clinical isolates,from 47 patients with melioidosis were prepared and separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(SDS-PAGE) using 10%gels and stained with Coomassie brilliant *** banding patterns were compared by using a laser densitometer and dendrogram. Results:There were 6 different banding patterns of WCP and 2 types of *** 1 -5 WCP had 8 common protein bands at 19.0 - 45.0 kDa with identical OMP *** banding patterns of WCP in type 6 were distinct from the others and also its OMP *** majority of clinical isolates(37/50,74%) were in type 1 *** the remaining isolates,8 were in type 2,2 in type 3,and one each was in type 4 to *** was no significant association between the WCP typing and the demographic or clinical features of the investigated ***:Despite the wide variation of clinical features of melioidosis,the results of this study show that *** had a few differences in the WCP and OMP *** typing of WCP and OMP,using SDS-PAGE analysis,could be an alternative method for phenotypic differentiation in clinical isolates of ***.

Treatment of large bone defects derived from bone tumor surgery is typically performed in multiple separate operations,such as hyperthermia to extinguish residual malignant cells or implanting bioactive materials to initiate apatite remineralization for tissue repair;it is very challenging to combine these functions into a ***,we report the first photothermal(PT)effect in bismuth(Bi)-doped *** the basis of this discovery,we have developed a new type of Bi-doped bioactive glass that integrates both functions,thus reducing the number of treatment *** demonstrate that Bi-doped bioglasses(BGs)provide high PT efficiency,potentially facilitating photoinduced hyperthermia and bioactivity to allow bone tissue *** PT effect of Bi-doped BGs can be effectively controlled by managing radiative and non-radiative processes of the active Bi species by quenching photoluminescence(PL)or depolymerizing glass *** vitro studies demonstrate that such glasses are biocompatible to tumor and normal cells and that they can promote osteogenic cell proliferation,differentiation,and *** illumination with near-infrared(NIR)light,the bioglass(BG)can efficiently kill bone tumor cells,as demonstrated via in vitro and in vivo *** indicates excellent potential for the integration of multiple functions within the new materials,which will aid in the development and application of novel biomaterials.

This study develops a method to use deep learning models to predict the mineral assemblages and their relative abundances in paleolake cores using high-resolution XRF core scan elemental data and X-ray diffraction(XRD)mineralogical results from the same core taken at coarser *** uses the XRF core scan data along with published mineralogical information from the Olduvai Gorge Coring Project(OGCP)2014 sediment cores 1A,2A,and 3A from Paleolake Olduvai,*** regression and classification models were developed using a Keras deep learning framework to assess the predictability of mineral assemblages with their relative abundances(in regression models)or at least the mineral assemblages(in classification models)using XRF core scan *** were created using the Sequential class and Functional API with different model *** correlation matrix of element ratios calculated from XRF element intensity records from the cores and XRD-derived mineralogical information was used to select the most useful features to train the models.1057 training data records were used for the *** classes were also used for some models using Wide&Deep neural networks since those combine the benefits of memorization and generalization for mineral *** results were validated using 265 validation data records unseen by the model and discuss the accuracy of models using six test *** optimized Deep Neural Network(DNN)classification model achieved over 86%binary accuracy while the regression models were also able to predict the relative mineral abundances of samples with high ***,the study shows the efficacy of a carefully crafted Deep Learning(DL)model for predicting mineral assemblages and abundances using high-resolution XRF core scan data.

Modelling the combined effect of surface roughness and topography on bacterial attachment

New guidance for using t-SNE:Alternative defaults,hyperparameter selection automation,and comparative evaluation

We present new guidelines for choosing hyperparameters for t-SNE and an evaluation comparing these guidelines to current *** guidelines include a proposed empirically optimum guideline derived from a t-SNE hyperparameter grid search over a large collection of data *** also introduce a new method to featurize data sets using graph-based metrics called scagnostics;we use these features to train a neural network that predicts optimal t-SNE hyperparameters for the respective data *** neural network has the potential to simplify the use of t-SNE by removing guesswork about which hyperparameters will produce the best *** evaluate and compare our neural network-derived and empirically optimum hyperparameters to several other t-SNE hyperparameter guidelines from the literature on 68 data *** hyperparameters predicted by our neural network yield embeddings with similar accuracy as the best current t-SNE *** our empirically optimum hyperparameters is simpler than following previously published guidelines but yields more accurate embeddings,in some cases by a statistically significant *** find that the useful ranges for t-SNE hyperparameters are narrower and include smaller values than previously reported in the ***,we also quantify the potential for future improvements in this area:using data from a grid search of t-SNE hyperparameters we find that an optimal selection method could improve embedding accuracy by up to two percentage points over the methods examined in this paper.

Lower extremity injury in female basketball players is related to a large difference in peak eversion torque between barefoot and shod conditions

Background： The majority of injuries reported in female basketball players are ankle sprains and mechanisms leading to injury have been debated. Investigations into muscular imbalances in barefoot versus shod conditions and their relationship with injury severity have not been performed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of wearing athletic shoes on muscular strength and its relationship to lower extremity injuries, specifically female basketball players due to the high incidence of ankle injuries in this population. Methods： During pre-season, 11 female collegiate basketball players underwent inversion and eversion muscle strength testing using an iso- kinetic dynamometer in both a barefoot and shod conditions. The difference between conditions was calculated for inversion and eversion peak torque, time to peak torque as well as eversion-to-inversion peak torque percent strength ratio for both conditions. Lower extremity injuries were documented and ranked in severity. The ranked difference between barefoot and shod conditions for peak torque and time to peak torque as well as percent strength ratio was correlated with injury ranking using a Spearman rho correlation （p） with an a level of 0.05. Results： The ranked differences in barefoot and shod for peak eversion and inversion torque at 120°/s were correlated with their injury ranking. Ranking of the athletes based on the severity of injuries that were sustained during the season was found to have a strong, positive relationship with the difference in peak eversion torque between barefoot and shod （p = 0.78; p = 0.02）. Conclusion： It is possible that a large discrepancy between strength in barefoot and shod conditions can predispose an athlete to injury. Nar- rowing the difference in peak eversion torque between barefoot and shod could decrease propensity to injury. Future work should investigate the effect of restoration of muscular strength during barefoot and shod exercise on injury rates

Application of enhanced oil recovery methods in Kazakhstan has been ongoing for decades alongside the continued discovery of new oil and gas fields in the Pre-Caspian *** objective of this review is to provide an overview of the hydrocarbon reserves and production,and the status of the petroleum industry in Kazakhstan,with a focus on the EOR methods and projects being applied to recover those reserves.A summary of the specific EOR methods in use was prepared,and existing enhanced recovery projects in Kazakhstan were reviewed and their successes and challenges were *** performance of these projects in the context of EOR performance indicators such as capillary number and mobility ratio,as well as operational and environmental issues,were *** for current and potential applications of EOR in Kazakhstan were also *** widespread application of thermal EOR methods,in use for decades in Kazakhstan’s older fields,was found to be successful,with very favorable impacts on mobility ratio from the addition of thermal energy to the *** EOR methods in Kazakhstan have had more limited success,with some significant challenges due to high concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the injected *** injection started in the late 1960s,achieving good results.A recent polymer injection pilot project has shown some promise,with a favorable impact on mobility ratio and oil production,although the project has not yet been expanded beyond two polymer *** results indicate the huge potential of existing and future EOR *** review is the first compilation of Kazakhstan’s existing oil and gas reserves,production,and EOR project performance,and should be seen as a guide to the existing applications of EOR methods in Kazakhstan.
