Stress-rupture measurements of cast magnesium strengthened by in-situ production of ceramic particles

We have introduced a polymer precursor into molten magnesium and then in-situ pyrolyzed to produce castings of metal matrix composites(P-MMCs)containing silicon-carbonitride(SiCNO)ceramic ***-rupture measurements of as-cast P-MMCs was performed at 350 ℃(0.69TM)to 450 ℃(0.78TM)under dead load condition corresponding to tensile stress of 2.5 MPa to 20 *** time-to-fracture data were analyzed using the classical Monkman–Grant *** time-to-fracture is thermally activated and follows a power-law stress exponent exhibiting dislocation *** analysis revealed that while pure magnesium appears to fracture by dislocation slip,the P-MMCs fail from the nucleation and growth of voids at the grain boundaries.

Mitsugumin 29 (MG29) is a transmembrane protein that is normally found in the triad junction of skeletal muscle. Our previous studies have shown that targeted deletion of mg29 from the skeletal muscle resulted in abnormality of the triad junction structure, and also increased susceptibility to muscle fatigue. To elucidate the basis of these effects, we investigated the properties of Ca2+-uptake and -release in toxin-skinned Extensor Digitorium Longus (EDL) muscle fibers from control and mg29 knockout mice. Compared with the control muscle, submaximal Ca2+-uptake into the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) was slower and the storage of Ca2+ inside the SR was less in the mutant muscle, due to increased leakage process of Ca2+ movement across the SR. The leakage pathway is associated with the increased sensitivity of Ca2+/caffeine -induced Ca2+ release to myoplasmic Ca2+. Therefore, the increased fatigability of mutant EDL muscles can result from a combination of a slowing of Ca2+ uptake, modification of Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR), and a reduction in total SR Ca2+ content.

Evaluation of wound healing and antimicrobial potentials of Ixora coccinea root extract

Objective:To evaluate the wound healing and antimicrobial activity of root extracts of Ixora coccinea(***).Methods:To investigate the wound healing efficacy of root extract of *** Linn,five groups of animals were divided each containing six *** wound models including incision and excision wound models were used in this *** parameters studied were tensile strength on incision wound model and in terms of wound contraction for excision wound model were compared with standard Nitrofurazone(NFZ) ointment(0.2%w/w). Six extracts(***,petroleum ether,benzene,chloroform and ethyl acetate ) of I. coccinea were screened for in vitro growth inhibiting activity against different bacterial strains riz. Staphylococcia *** pumilius,Enterococcus *** coli,Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungi Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger were compared with the standard drugs ciprofloxacin and chloramphenicol for antibacterial and griscofulvin for antifungal *** serial dilution and cup(or) well plate methods were used for the antimicrobial study and MIC was ***:The ethanolic extract showed significant (P<0.001) wound healing activity when compared to standard drug NFZ with respect to normal control *** *** extract showed highly significant antibacterial activity against all bacterial strains used in this study when compared to *** aqueous extract showed moderate significant inhibition against all bacterial strains when compared to standard. All the extracts were shown negligible activity against the fungal strains used in this study. A series of some new 2-imino-5-[（Z）-1-（4-methylphenyl）methylidene]-3-[5-（2-oxo-2H-3-chromenyl）-1,3-oxazol-2-yl]-1,3- thiazolan-4-ones 5a-j has been synthesized and assayed for their antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria *** subtilis（ATCC 6633）,Staphylococcus aureus（ATCC 6538p） and Micrococcus luteus（IFC 12708）,and Gram-negative bacteria viz. Proteus vulgaris（ATCC 3851）.Salmonella typhimurium（ATCC 14028） and Escherichia coli（ATCC 25922）.Among the screened compounds,5d,5e,5f,5g,and 5j exhibited potent inhibitory activity compared to standard drug,and emerged as potential molecules for further development.

Annually,10%of cirrhotic patients with ascites develop refractory ascites for which large-volume paracentesis(LVP)is a frequently used therapeutic ***,although a safe method,is associated with circulatory dysfunction in a significant percentage of patients,which is termed para-centesis-induced circulatory dysfunction(PICD).PICD results in faster reaccumulation of ascites,hyponatremia,renal impairment,and shorter *** is diagnosed through laboratory results,with increases of>50%of baseline plasma renin activity to a value≥4 ng/mL/h on the fifth to sixth day after *** this review,we discuss the pathophysi-ology and prevention of PICD.

A pilot study of a novel pulsatile flow generator using large collapsible bladder

Background: There are different experimental models avialable for generating pulsatile flow in laboratory and study their heamodynamic effects on blood vessels. We aim to produce a novel pulsatile flow generator utilizing a large collapsible rubber bladder and the phenomenon of fluid structure interactions occurring in a specially designed flexible tube arrangement. Mehtods: Water enters from a reservoir above into a large collapsible bladder made of rubber which opens into ‘U’ shaped tube made of flexible material and held by non rigid structures. As liquid starts flowing the distal end of collapsible bladder collapses under the negative atmospheric pressure generated inside closing the mouth of ‘U’ shaped tube and produces pulsatile flow. Resuts: The frequency of pulsations, pressure fluctuations and velocity profile resemble that of in vivo blood flow. As the flow entering into collapsible bladder increases the frequency of pulsatile flow decreases and also when height of the collapsible bladder from the ground was changed. The whole cycle of alternate collapse/expansion of collapsible bladder with generation of pulsatile flow continue indefinitely as long as there is enough water in reservoir and vertical gradient to sustain the flow. Conclusions: The pulsatile flow so produced has many of the characteristics of physiological blood flow and can be used to study mechanisms of various cardiovascular diseases in laboratory.

BACKGROUND Doxorubicin and other anthracycline derivatives inhibit topoisomerase II and is an important class of cytotoxic chemotherapy in cancer *** use of anthracycline is limited by dose-dependent cardiotoxicity,which may manifest initially as asymptomatic cardiac dysfunction with subsequent progression to congestive heart *** baseline assessment and periodic monitoring of cardiac function for patients receiving anthracycline agents,there are unmet needs in prediction and prevention of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity(AIC).CASE SUMMARY A 35-year-old African American female was found to have a 9-cm high-grade osteosarcoma of right femur and normal baseline cardiac function with left ventricular ejection fraction of approximately 60%-70%determined by transthoracic and dobutamine stress *** underwent perioperative doxorubicin and cisplatin chemotherapy with 3 cycles before surgery and 3 cycles after surgery,and received a total of 450 mg/m2 doxorubicin at the end of her treatment *** was evaluated regularly during chemotherapy without any cardiac or respiratory *** two months after her last chemotherapy,the patient presented to the emergency department with dyspnea for one week and was intubated for acute hypoxic respiratory *** showed an ejection fraction of 5%-10%with severe biventricular *** attempts to optimize cardiac function,the patient’s hemodynamic status continued to decline,and resuscitation was not successful on the seventh day of *** autopsy showed no evidence of osteosarcoma,and the likely cause of death was cardiac failure with the evidence of pulmonary congestion,liver congestion,and multiple body cavity *** We present a case of 35-year-old African American female developing cardiogenic shock shortly after receiving a cumulative dose of 450 mg/m2 doxorubicin over 9 *** monitoring and management of patients receivin

In the present research, a series of 5,6-bis aryl 1,2,4-triazines 5a^5f were synthesized by condensation of various benzils 4a^4f with aminoguanidine bicarbonate and were screened in vivo, for their anticonvulsant and neurotoxicity studies. Compounds 5a, 5b and 5d were found to be potent molecules of this series, when compared with the reference drugs phenytoin sodium, diazepam and lamotrigine. The structures of these compounds were established by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectroscopic data.
