Effect of smart sprinkler irrigation utilization on water use efficiency for wheat crops in arid regions

The smart irrigation system(SIS)developed in this research is a valuable tool for scheduling irrigation and quantifying water required by *** was implemented and tested under sprinkler irrigation system to irrigate wheat crops(YecoraRojo).Results obtained from this system were compared with the control irrigation system(CIS),whose scheduling method was based on data from an automatic weather *** indicated significant savings in applied water using the *** addition,the use of the SIS conserved 12%of irrigation water compared to CIS and obtained an economical *** water use efficiency(WUE)under SIS had generally higher values(1.64 kg/m^(3))compared to CIS(1.46 kg/m^(3)).Hence,the application of SIS technology provides significant advantages on WUE and irrigation water use efficiency(IWUE).Relatively high WUE and IWUE were found for the irrigation treatment(80%of evapotranspiration under SIS).Results showed that the irrigation requirements of wheat increased(100%of ETc under CIS)with increasing evapotranspiration(ETc)but excessive irrigation could decrease WUE and *** results indicated that extreme irrigation might not produce higher yield or optimal economic benefit,thus,suitable irrigation schedules by using SIS must be established and extendable to other agricultural crops.

Drought stress linked with climate change is one of the major constraints faced by common bean farmers in Africa and elsewhere. Mitigating this constraint requires the selection of resilient varieties that withstand drought threats to common bean *** study assessed the drought response of 64 small red-seeded genotypes of common bean grown in a lattice design replicated twice under contrasting moisture regimes,terminal drought stress and non-stress, in Ethiopia during the dry season from November2014 to March 2015. Multiple plant traits associated with drought were assessed for their contribution to drought adaptation of the genotypes. Drought stress determined by a drought intensity index was moderate(0.3). All the assessed traits showed significantly different genotypic responses under drought stress and non-stress conditions. Eleven genotypes significantly(P ≤ 0.05) outperformed the drought check cultivar under both drought stress and non-stress conditions in seed yielding potential. Seed yield showed positive and significant correlations with chlorophyll meter reading, vertical root pulling resistance force, number of pods per plant, and seeds per pod under both soil moisture regimes, indicating their potential use in selection of genotypes yielding well under drought stress and non-stress conditions. Clustering analysis using Mahalanobis distance grouped the genotypes into four groups showing high and significant inter-cluster distance, suggesting that hybridization between drought-adapted parents from the groups will provide the maximum genetic recombination for drought tolerance in subsequent generations.

In this study,twelve machine learning(ML)techniques are used to accurately estimate the safety factor of rock slopes(SFRS).The dataset used for developing these models consists of 344 rock slopes from various open-pit mines around Iran,evenly distributed between the training(80%)and testing(20%)*** models are evaluated for accuracy using Janbu's limit equilibrium method(LEM)and commercial tool GeoStudio *** assessment metrics show that the random forest model is the most accurate in estimating the SFRS(MSE=0.0182,R2=0.8319)and shows high agreement with the results from the LEM *** results from the long-short-term memory(LSTM)model are the least accurate(MSE=0.037,R2=0.6618)of all the models ***,only the null space support vector regression(NuSVR)model performs accurately compared to the practice mode by altering the value of one parameter while maintaining the other parameters *** is suggested that this model would be the best one to use to calculate the SFRS.A graphical user interface for the proposed models is developed to further assist in the calculation of the SFRS for engineering *** this study,we attempt to bridge the gap between modern slope stability evaluation techniques and more conventional analysis methods.

BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is a spectrum of disease ranging from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), through to advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis. Many patients with NAFLD remain undiagnosed and recognizing those at risk is very crucial. Although liver biopsy is the gold standard method for diagnosing and staging NAFLD, non-invasive imaging and lab modalities are also very promising in diagnosing these *** To explore some of these non-invasive modalities in this context and assess how they hold up in terms of making a diagnosis while avoiding an invasive procedure like a liver *** This study was conducted on NAFLD/NASH patients(n = 73) who underwent Fibroscan examinations at Saint George Hospital University Medical Center over 17 mo in order to assess liver fibrosis. Obtained Fibroscan results were correlated to laboratory tests and calculated aspartate transaminase(AST)/alanine transaminase(ALT) ratio, AST platelet ratio index(APRI) score and Fibrosis-4 *** A significant age difference was observed across fibrosis stages of investigated patients. The mean stiffness score was 9.48 ± 11.77 KPa. A significant negative correlation was observed between ALT, AST, Albumin, gamma-glutamyl transferase, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and ALP when compared across fibrosis stages. On the other hand, a significant positive correlation was found between Bilirubin, PT INR, partial thromboplastin time, glucose, and Platelet count when compared across fibrosis stages, in addition to AST/ALT ratio, APRI, and Fib-4 *** This study showed that Ultrasound alone is not efficient in the assessment of advancement of liver disease. Furthermore, the high positive relation between AST/ALT ratio, APRI and Fib-4 scores with fibrosis stages in NAFLD patients suggests that they could be used clinically in combination with Fibroscan to predict significant fibrosis and cirrhosis and to avoid liver biopsy.

Serum Matrix Metalloproteinase 3 and Tissue Inhibitor Metalloproteinase 1 in Vascular Dementia: A Comparative Study

Aim: To compare serum level of matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP3) and tissue inhibitor metallo-proteinase 1 (TIMP1) in vascular dementia patients and healthy control subjects. Methods: A case control study was carried out in Ain Shams University hospital, Cairo, Egypt. 32 cases with vascular dementia were collected and classified into 2 subgroups;vascular dementia of multiinfarct type (VDMI) 14 patients, and vascular dementia of subcortical type (VDSC) 18 subjects. 23 cases with normal cognitive functions were collected as control group. Cases were subjected to comprehensive geriatric assessment, neurological examination, neuropsychological testing and brain CT scan. Blood sample was collected to analyze serum level of matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP3) and tissue inhibitor metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP1). Results: Mean serum level of TIMP1 (20.85 × 103 picogram/ml) was significantly lower than mean serum level of TIMP1 in control group (27.69 × 103 picogram/ml) (p = 0.018). The same finding was also evident when comparing VDMI subgroup mean serum TIMP1 (18.71 × 103 pc/ml) to control group (p = 0.025). There was no significant difference between mean serum MMP3 levels in cases group (mean = 67.39 × 103) as compared to control group (mean = 61.65 × 103 pc/ml) (p = 0.519). Conclusion: Patients with VD particularly VDMI has lower serum level of TIMP1 as compared to control group.

Surgical Treatment of Giant Cavernous Hepatic Haemangiomas

Background: Haemangiomas are the most common benign liver tumors. Treatment is indicated for symptomatic tumors, rapid increase in size, rupture or doubt in diagnosis. Objective: Evaluation the efficacy of surgical treatment of giant cavernous hepatic haemangioma in tertiary hepatobiliary center. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study of 34 patients with giant hepatic haemangioma operated upon. The diagnosis was proved preoperatively in 27 patients and confirmed by histopathology postoperatively in all patients. The indication of surgery was abdominal pain with large sizes tumors, rapid growth, and spontaneous rupture with haemoperitoneum. Surgical treatment either liver resection or living liver transplantation. Results: 23 cases (67.6%) were females & 11 cases (32.4%) were males, median age 38.8 years. Haemangiomas located in right lobe in 19 patients (55.9%), left lobe in 12 patients (35.4%) in both lobe in 2 patients (5.8%), scattered all over both lobe in one patient (2.9%), solitary in 27 cases (79.4%) and multiple in 7 patients (20.6%). The diameter was 8 - 27 cm, mean 18.6 cm in diameter. 33 patients had liver resection (29 elective resection and 4 emergent resection for rupture). One patient had haemangioma irresectable;the living liver transplant was performed. No mortality during 18 months follow up and complication occurred in 8 patients out of 34 patients. Conclusion: Hepatic resection is an effective treatment option for giant cavernous hepatic haemangioma, in selected patient living related liver transplantation may be the only therapeutic option.

Probing Nucleon Structure in Deep Inelastic Scattering

The comparison between the muon and the neutrino as probes of the nucleon structure is presented. The prediction of the structure functions, quark distributions, leptonic currents, and cross section led us to obtain some of the features of the electro-weak interactions in the deep inelastic scattering. A perturbation technique is used to evaluate the leptonic current that is assumed to be a complex quantity. The imaginary part of which represents the rate of absorption. On the other hand, the quarks wave functions forming the nucleon are extracted from experimental data for neutrino-nucleon and muon-nucleon collisions. A numerical technique is applied to analyze the data of the experiments CERN-NA-2 and CERN-WA25, to evaluate the quark functions and hence to calculate the hadronic current. It is found that the quark distribution functions predicted by the muon as a probe is slightly shifted up compared with that of the neutrino. Finally, the differential cross section is calculated in terms of leptonic and hadronic currents.

Changes in Platelet Indices during Pregnancy as Potential Markers for Prediction of Preeclampsia Development

Objective: To assess whether changes in platelet indices, detectable by simple complete blood count (CBC), during pregnancy could be used as markers for prediction of development of preeclampsia (PE). Methods: A total of 2813 pregnant women who received regular antenatal care until delivery were included. Participants were divided into 3 groups: normotensive pregnant women (n = 2621), women with PE without severe features (n = 169), and women with PE with severe features (n = 23). Blood samples were collected during antenatal visits and/or during the period of in-patient hospital stay, and changes in platelet indices were compared among the three groups. Results: Platelet count (PC) was decreasing while mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) were increasing as PE progressed. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis showed that PDW had the largest area under curve (AUC) [0.980 (95% CI: 0.964 - 1.000)], making it the best marker for predicting development of PE. Also, PDW showed the most statistically significant correlation with mean arterial pressure (MAP) (r = 0.902, p = 0.000), making it the best marker for predicting severity of hypertension. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that PC decreases while MPV and PDW increase as pregnancy advances, and these changes are more pronounced in PE than normotensive pregnancy. These changes predate development of PE by 2 - 8 weeks and are proportional to the progress of this disorder. The selected platelet indices, especially PDW, have the potential to be utilized as markers for not only prediction of PE development but also severity of hypertension.
