Melatonin in the seasonal response of the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum

Aphids display life cycles largely determined by the photoperiod.During the warm long-day seasons.most aphid species reproduce by viviparous parthenogenesis.The shortening of the photoperiod in autumn induces a switch to sexual reproduction.Males and sexual females mate to produce overwintering resistant eggs.In addition to this full life cycle(holocycle),there are anholocyelic lineages that do not respond to changes in photoperiod and reproduce continuously by parthenogenesis.The molecular or hormonal events that trigger the scasonal response(i.c,induction of the sexual phenotypes)are still unknown.Although circadian synthesis of melatonin is known to play a key role in vertebrate photoperiodism,the involvement of the circadian clock and/or of the hor-mone melatonin in insect seasonal responses is not so well established.Here we show that melatonin levels in the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum are significantly higher in holocyclice aphids reared under short days than under long days,while no differences were found between anholoeyelic aphids under the same conditions.We also found that melatonin is localized in the aphid suboesophageal ganglion(SOG)and in the thoracic ganglionic mass(TGM).In analogy to vertcbrates,insect-type arylalkxylamine N-acetyltransferases(i-AANATs)are thought to play a key role in melatonin synthesis.We measured the expression of four I-AANAT genes identified in A.pisum and localized two of them in situ in the insect central nervous systems(CNS).Levels of expression of these genes were compatible with the quantities of melatonin observed.Moreover,like melatonin,expression of these genes was found in the SOG and the TGM.

Background: Duodenoscope-related multidrug-resistant organism(MDRO) infections raise concerns. Disposable duodenoscopes have been recently introduced in the market and approved by regulatory agencies with the aim to reduce the risk of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) associated infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of procedures performed with single-use duodenoscopes in patients with clinical indications to single-operator cholangiopancreatoscopy. Methods: This is a multicenter international, retrospective study combining all patients who underwent complex biliopancreatic interventions using the combination of a single-use duodenoscope and a single-use cholangioscope. The primary outcome was technical success defined as ERCP completion for the intended clinical indication. Secondary outcomes were procedural duration, rate of cross-over to reusable duodenoscope, operator-reported satisfaction score(1 to 10) on performance rating of the single-use duodenoscope, and adverse event(AE) rate. Results: A total of 66 patients(26, 39.4% female) were included in the study. ERCP was categorized according to ASGE ERCP grading system as 47(71.2%) grade 3 and 19(28.8%) grade 4. The technical success rate was 98.5%(65/66). Procedural duration was 64(interquartile range 15-189) min, cross-over rate to reusable duodenoscope was 1/66(1.5%). The satisfaction score of the single-use duodenoscope classified by the operators was 8.6 ± 1.3 points. Four patients(6.1%) experienced AEs not directly related to the single-use duodenoscope, namely 2 post-ERCP pancreatitis(PEP), 1 cholangitis and 1 bleeding.Conclusions: Single-use duodenoscope is effective, reliable and safe even in technically challenging procedures with a non-inferiority to reusable duodenoscope, making these devices a viable alternative to standard reusable equipment.

In the last few years,preclinical and clinical studies identified the ventral tegmental area(VTA)as one of the first brain regions to be affected in the prodromal phase of Alzheimer's disease(AD).The VTA is a deep midbrain nucleus rich in dopaminergic neurons that innervates and releases dopamine(DA)in several cortical and subcortical brain regions.DA plays a crucial role in the modulation of both cognitive and noncognitive functions and failure of its release underlies both cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with AD.

BACKGROUND Intramural duodenal hematoma is a rare condition described for the first time in 1838.This condition is usually associated with blunt abdominal trauma in children.Other non-traumatic risk factors for spontaneous duodenal haematoma include several pancreatic diseases,coagulation disorders,malignancy,collagenosis,peptic ulcers,vasculitis and upper endoscopy procedures.In adults the most common risk factor reported is anticoagulation therapy.The clinical presentation may vary from mild abdominal pain to acute abdomen and intestinal obstruction or gastrointestinal bleeding.CASE SUMMARY The aim of this case summary is to show a case of intramural spontaneous hematoma with symptoms of intestinal obstruction that was properly drained endoscopically by an innovative system lumen-apposing metal stent Hot AXIOS™stent(Boston Scientific Corp.,Marlborough,MA,United States).CONCLUSION Endoscopic lumen-apposing metal stent Hot AXIOS™stent is a safe and feasible treatment of duodenal intramural hematoma in our case.

Located in the middle of the fever to solve the problem of CO_(2)emissions in the environment,CO_(2)sequestration by reaction with epoxides is one of the key tools,as it not only fixes CO_(2),but also makes it functional by leading to cyclic carbonates.Herein,the results are focused specifically on the formation of cyclic organic carbonates catalyzed by metal-salen complexes,previously achieved with yttrium and scandium,that are compared with those of analogous complexes containing metals from the first transition series,such as cobalt or chromium.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations allow to determine whether this switch of metals will be feasible and provide the basis for instigating future experimental efforts in this regard.The calculations analyzing the structure and electronics of the catalysts allow us to give not only a clear picture of whether these catalysts will be efficient,but also allow us to assess which metal center is the most convenient and/or whether the catalytic reaction will occur under mild conditions.Advanced buried volume calculations with the SambVca packages shed light on the different catalytic pockets of monometallic first row transition metals vs.group III salen complexes.Our predictive catalysis results show that the bite O-M-O angle plays an essential role in the catalysis.

The majority of patients infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-COrona-Virus-2(SARS-CoV-2)either completely recover from symptoms in a few days or stay asymptomatic.[1−3]Nevertheless,a consistent proportion of subjects with a history of probable or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection refers persistency,new occurrence,relapse,or fluctuation of symptoms,and these manifestations are defined as post-COVID-19 condition.[4]Of note,the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 include several cardiac manifestations,including direct myocardial and pericardial injury/inflammation,as well as cardiomyopathies and arrythmias,sustained by viral infiltration and/or dysregulation of adaptive immune response.[5]Even though rare,acute myocarditis may be an important post-COVID-19 condition and may be associated with the occurrence of new-onset atrial fibrillation.

Aromaticity,in general,can promote a given reaction by stabilizing a transition state or a product via a mobility ofπelectrons in a cyclic structure.Similarly,such a promotion could be also achieved by destabilizing an antiaromatic reactant.However,both aromaticity and transition states cannot be directly measured in experiment.Thus,computational chemistry has been becoming a key tool to understand the aromaticity-driven reaction mechanisms.In this review,we will analyze the relationship between aromaticity and reaction mechanism to highlight the importance of density functional theory calculations and present it according to an approach via either aromatizing a transition state/product or destabilizing a reactant by antiaromaticity.Specifically,we will start with a particularly challenging example of dinitrogen activation followed by other small-molecule activation,Csingle bondF bond activation,rearrangement,as well as metathesis reactions.In addition,antiaromaticity-promoted dihydrogen activation,CO_(2)capture,and oxygen reduction reactions will be also briefly discussed.Finally,caution must be cast as the magnitude of the aromaticity in the transition states is not particularly high in most cases.Thus,a proof of an adequate electron delocalization rather than a complete ring current is recommended to support the relatively weak aromaticity in these transition states.

Mathematical models for diseases in wildlife populations with indirect transmission

In this paper,five different models for five different kinds of diseases occurring in wildlife populations are introduced.In all models,a logistic growth term is taken into account and the disease is transmitted to the susceptible population indirectly through an envi-ronment reservoir.The time evolution of these diseases is described together with its spatial propagation.The character of spatial homogeneous equilibria against the uniform and non-uniform perturbations together with the occurrence of Hopf bifurcations are discussed through a linear stability analysis.No Turing instability is observed.The partial differential field equations are also integrated numerically to validate the stability results herein obtained and to extract additional information on the temporal and spatial behavior of the different diseases.
