The European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus is an exotic herbivorous mammal undergoing an active phase of geographical expansion in the arid ecosystems of *** Adaptive Flexibility Hypothesis states that populations at the range edge(new populations)will exhibit greater fexibility in the use of resources compared with populations located in the range core(older populations).The objective of this work was to compare the rabbit’s use of spatial and trophic resources in relation to the establishment time of their *** sampling was carried out for 2 years(2017 and 2018)in sites with different establishment times for rabbit *** sampling stratifed by type of habitat was applied using 115 fxed strip transects of 1,000 m^(2) laid out across the study *** rabbit signs were recorded in each transect,and environmental and anthropic variables were *** results show that the individuals from the range edge are more selective in the use of habitat than those from the range *** the microhabitat level,we observed a pattern in the particular components of habitat use by rabbits mainly linked to food availability and proximity to *** a trophic perspective,rabbits could show fexible adjustment to novel conditions and environments in the range *** variability in resource use by the European rabbit confrms its ecological fexibility,pivotal for their advance toward new environments in Argentina.

Salt is a major abiotic stress threatening crop plants such as rice. Tolerance to salt is complex and regulated by numerous genetic and non-genetic factors. To date most screens for salt tolerance rely on plant performance in stressed conditions. This article describes the ability to screen for salt tolerance in non-stressed conditions. The work is based on correlations between 62 rice genotypes in salt stress and non-stress conditions and measuring the intake of elements using Particle Induced X-ray Emission and X-ray Fluorescence. Roots and shoots were analysed though shoots provided easier and more robust materials to work with. Data were interpreted using multivariate statistical analysis which showed the intake ratio of elements across tolerant, moderately tolerant and susceptible rice genotypes. Tolerant genotypes exhibited a larger intake of elements, and a classification criteria based on Canonical Discriminant Analysis allowed differentiation of salt tolerant genotypes not only under salt stress but, significantly, also under non-stressed conditions. Thus, shoot element content in benign conditions can be used as an indicator for salt tolerance. These studies suggest that many salt tolerance mechanisms in rice cultivars are constitutive, they are not switched on by stress, and this has implications for physiological and genetic studies, especially in crop plants. The approach has practical application as it allows pre-screening in non-stressed conditions, from which candidate salt tolerant genotypes may be selected for subsequent testing in saline field conditions, selecting in benign conditions provides greater seed harvest of the next generation which can be used in multiple tests.

Validation of the Glaucoma Quality of Life-15 Questionnaire in Serbian language

AIM：To translate the Glaucoma Quality of Life-15（GQL-15）to Serbian language and asses its validity and reliability in the population of Serbian ***：The study included 177 glaucoma *** parameters（visual acuity,mean defect and square root of loss variance of visual field）and socio-demographic data were *** were stratified according to the Nelson’s glaucoma staging system as mild,moderate and advanced *** patients filled out the GQL-15 and National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire（NEI-VFQ 25）.The GQL-15 was translated following the internationally-accepted methodology,and its psychometric properties were assessed by using classical test theory and Rasch ***：The mean total score for the GQL-15 was 20.68±*** Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the whole scale was 0.89（central and near vision,α=0.24;peripheral vision,α=0.85;glare and dark adaptation,α=0.83）.Factor analysis established 4 factors（70.3% of variance）：two corresponding to the original factors and two new factors specific for the Serbian *** GQL-15 score correlated positively with almost all clinical parameters and NEI-VFQ 25 proving good criterion *** of the GQL-15 total score on test-retest confirmed appropriate scale reproducibility（ρ=0.96,P〈0.001）.The GQL-15 discriminated well advanced from mild and moderate *** Rasch analysis we obtained adequate item（0.95）reliability *** all items had infit and outfit mean squares in the accepted ***：Serbian version of the GQL-15 demonstrates adequate reliability and *** version of the GQL-15is a valid instrument for evaluation of quality of life among Serbian speaking patients with glaucoma and can be applied in daily clinical work.

GSTM1-null and GSTT1-active genotypes as risk determinants of primary open angle glaucoma among smokers

AIM： To evaluate glutathione transferase theta 1 and mu 1（GSTT1 and GSTM1） polymorphisms as determinants of primary open angle glaucoma（POAG） risk, independently or in combination with cigarette smoking, hypertension and diabetes ***： A case-control study with 102 POAG patients and 202 age and gender-matched controls was carried out. Multiplex-polymerase chain reaction method was used for the analysis of GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms. The differences between two groups were tested by the t-test or χ~2 test. Logistic regression analysis was used for assessing the risk for disease ***： The presence of GSTM1-null genotype did not contribute independently towards the risk of POAG. However, individuals with GSTT1-active genotype were at almost two-fold increased risk to develop glaucoma（P=0.044） which increased up to 4.36 when combined with GSTM1-null carriers（P=0.024）. When glutathione transferase（GST） genotypes were analyzed in association with cigarette smoking, hypertension and diabetes, only carriers of GSTT1-active genotype had significantly increased risk of POAG development in comparison with GSTT1-null genotype individuals with no history of smoking, hypertension and diabetes, respectively （OR=3.52, P=0.003; OR=10.02, P〈0.001; OR=4.53, P=0.002）. CONCLUSION： The results obtained indicate that both GSTM1-null and GSTT1-active genotypes are associated with increased POAG risk among smokers, suggesting potential gene-environment interaction in glaucoma development.

A 10-Year Survey of Severe Eye Injuries in Sport in Belgrade,Serbia 2000-2009

Introduction: The eye injuries inflicted in different sport activities are relatively rare and depend upon the type of sport. They are more common in recreational sport activities. These injuries are generally minor but may be very severe and result in permanent vision impairment. One must be aware of the fact that these sport activities, either recreative or professional, are exercised by young people. Methods: All analyzed patients were hospitalized at the Clinic of Eye Diseases, Clinical Center of Serbia, Belgrade, for severe eye injuries which occurred in sport activities. The analyzed period included 10 years, from the beginning of 2000 to the end of 2009. Results: In this period, a total of 117 patients with eye injuries sustained in some of sport activities were hospitalized. There were 114 (97.5%) injured males. Mean age of the injured was 25.8 years, and there were no individuals older than 50 years of age. Closed eyeball injures were reported in 96.6% and open injuries were seen in the remaining 3.4% of cases. During recreational sports, the eye injuries occurred in 76.1%, in the school—19.6%, and in professional sport—4.3% of the time. The injured individuals were as follows: pupils—35.0%, students—17.9%, workers—22.2%, clerks—20.6% and professional players—4.3% of cases. Upon completed treatment, visual acuity was normal in 77.8%, subnormal in 16.2%, impaired in 3.4% and amaurosis in 2.6% of cases.

胎儿期肠扩张对腹裂新生儿临床预后的影响

Purpose: In fetuses with gastroschisis, the importance of ultrasonographic bowel dilation remains controversial. The outcome of patients with gastroschisis with and without prenatal bowel dilation is reported. Methods: From 2000 to 2004, 27 neonates with gastroschisis were followed at a single center. Thirteen patients had prenatal ultrasonographic bowel dilation (diameter, ≥ 6 mm; range, 6- 35 mm). Outcomes of those with and without dilation were compared using 2 sample t tests and logistic regression. Results: Time to initiation of enteral nutrition varied significantly between groups (20.4 ± 11.7 days vs 12.5 ± 4.3 days, P < 0.05). A trend toward a reduced rate of primary closure was seen in those with dilation (23% vs 50% , P = 0.06). No significant difference was found when considering mortality, gestational age, time in the intensive care unit (ICU), time on parenteral nutrition, or length of stay. Prenatal bowel dilation, a longer ICU stay, and later gestational age independently predicted readmission for bowel obstruction (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Infants with gastroschisis and prenatal bowel dilation were significantly slower to initiate enteral feeding and tended to have a reduced incidence of primary closure. This did not translate into increased mortality, time on parenteral nutrition, time in the ICU, or length of stay. However, dilation was associated with readmission for bowel obstruction.

Liver dysfunction in children dependent on parenteral nutrition (PN) is well established, and the extent of hyperbilirubinemia has been shown to correlate with morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to assess whether increasing provisions of enteral nutrition can improve PN-associated hyperbilirubinemia over time. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on infants in our institution’s Short Bowel Syndrome Clinic from 1999 to 2004. Inclusion criteria included PN duration more than 1 month, serum direct bilirubin more than 3 mg/dL while on PN, and tolerance of full enteral nutrition with eventual discontinuation of PN. Paired t tests were used for statistical analyses. Results: Twelve infants were identified with a PN duration of 5 ± 1 months. Five patients underwent liver biopsy while on PN, and histological evidence of cholestasis was found on all specimens. Peak total and direct bilirubin levels were 10.5 ± 1.9 and 7.0 ± 1.6 mg/dL, respectively, and occurred at time of PN discontinuation. Only 2 patients had improvement in serum bilirubin levels before initiation of full enteral nutrition. After initiation of full enteral nutrition and discontinuation of PN, all patients achieved permanent normalization of bilirubin levels by 4 months (P <. 05) after a 1-month plateau phase. Alkaline phosphatase levels approached reference range within this time but were not significant. Conclusion: These data demonstrate for the first time that although PN-dependent infants can achieve normalization of marked hyperbilirubinemia with enteral nutrition, the improvement in liver function usually begins only after full enteral nutrition is tolerated and PN is withdrawn. These findings support the aggressive weaning of PN to enteral nutrition in infants with short bowel syndrome.
