Resource requirements of an edge-based digital twin service:an experimental study

Digital Twin(DT)is a pivotal application under the industrial digital transformation envisaged by the fourth industrial revolution(Industry 4.0).DT defines intelligent and real-time faithful reflections of physical entities such as industrial robots,thus allowing their remote control.Relying on the latest advances in Information and Communication Technologies(ICT),namely Network Function Virtualization(NFV)and Edge-computing,DT can be deployed as an on-demand service in the factories close proximity and offered leveraging radio access technologies.However,with the purpose of achieving the well-known scalability,flexibility,availability and performance guarantees benefits foreseen by the latest ICT,it is steadily required to experimentally profile and assess DT as a Service(DTaaS)solutions.Moreover,the dependencies between the resources claimed by the service and the relative demand and work loads require to be investigated.In this work,an Edge-based Digital Twin solution for remote control of robotic arms is deployed in an experimental testbed where,in compliance with the NFV paradigm,the service has been segmented in virtual network functions.Our research has primarily the objective to evaluate the entanglement among overall service performance and VNFs resource requirements,and the number of robots consuming the service varies.Experimental profiles show the most critical DT features to be the inverse kinematics and trajectory computations.Moreover,the same analysis has been carried out as a function of the industrial processes,namely based on the commands imposed on the robots,and particularly of their ion-level,resulting in a novel trade-off between computing and time resources requirements and trajectory guarantees.The derived results provide crucial insights for the design of network service scaling and resource orchestration fra-meworks dealing with DTaaS applications.Finally,we empirically prove LTE shortage to accommodate the minimum DT latency requirements.

Cloud-based robotics systems leverage a wide range of Information Technologies(IT)to offer tangible benefits like cost reduction,powerful computational capabilities,data offloading,etc.However,the centralized nature of cloud computing is not well-suited for a multitude of Operational Technologies(OT)nowadays used in robotics systems that require strict real-time guarantees and security.Edge computing and fog computing are complementary approaches that aim at mitigating some of these challenges by providing computing capabilities closer to the users.The goal of this work is hence threefold:i)to analyze the current edge computing and fog computing landscape in the context of robotics systems,ii)to experimentally evaluate an end-to-end robotics system based on solutions proposed in the literature,and iii)to experimentally identify current benefits and open challenges of edge computing and fog computing.Results show that,in the case of an exemplary delivery application comprising two mobile robots,the robot coordination and range can be improved by consuming real-time radio information available at the edge.However,our evaluation highlights that the existing software,wireless and virtualization technologies still require substantial evolution to fully support edge-based robotics systems.

Variational Approach to Heat Conduction Modeling

It is known that Fourier’s heat equation, which is parabolic, implies an infinite velocity propagation, or, in other words, that the mechanism of heat conduction is established instantaneously under all conditions. This is unacceptable on physical grounds in spite of the fact that Fourier’s law agrees well with experiment. However, discrepancies are likely to occur when extremely short distances or extremely short time intervals are considered, as they must in some modern problems of aero-thermodynamics. Cattaneo and independently Vernotte proved that such process can be described by Heaviside’s telegraph equation. This paper shows that this fact can be derived using calculus of variations, by application of the Euler-Lagrange equation. So, we proved that the equation of heat conduction with finite velocity propagation of the thermal disturbance can be obtained as a solution to one variational problem.

Variational Approach to 2D and 3D Heat Conduction Modeling

The paper proposes an approximate solution to the classical (parabolic) multidimensional 2D and 3D heat conduction equation for a 5 × 5 cm aluminium plate and a 5 × 5 × 5 cm aluminum cube. An approximate solution of the generalized (hyperbolic) 2D and 3D equation for the considered plate and cube is also proposed. Approximate solutions were obtained by applying calculus of variations and Euler-Lagrange equations. In order to verify the correctness of the proposed approximate solutions, they were compared with the exact solutions of parabolic and hyperbolic equations. The paper also presents the research on the influence of time parameters τ as well as the relaxation times τ ∗ to the variation of the profile of the temperature field for the considered aluminum plate and cube.

针对目前风力机叶片缺陷检测方法检测精度低、危险系数大、设备价格高等问题,提出一种基于LabVIEW+无人机的风力机叶片缺陷检测系统,实现了硬件平台搭建和系统软件设计,对图像处理算法进行研究,针对传统二值化算法中不同颜色风力机叶片阈值不同的问题,提出了应用边缘提取的检测方法。通过理论分析和实验对比了LabVIEW中边缘提取缺陷检测算子及组合算子的检测效果,并最终确定Sobel算子应用于本风力机叶片缺陷检测系统。实验表明,该系统能够实现不同颜色风力机叶片缺陷的自动、低成本检测,检测精度高达93%。

Synthesis of high-performance nickel hydroxide nanosheets/gadolinium doped-α-MnO_(2) composite nanorods as cathode and Fe_(3)O_(4)/GO nanospheres as anode for an all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor

The wide use of manganese dioxide(MnO_(2))as an electrode in all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors(ASCs)remains challenging because of its low electrical conductivity.This complication can be circumvented by introducing trivalent gadolinium(Gd)ions into the MnO_(2).Herein,we describe the successful hydrothermal synthesis of crystalline Gd-doped MnO_(2) nanorods with Ni(OH)_(2) nanosheets as cathode,which we combined with Fe_(3)O_(4)/GO nanospheres as anode for all-solid-state ASCs.Electrochemical tests dem on strate that Gd dopi ng sign ifica ntly affected the electrochemical activities of the MnO_(2),which was further enhanced by introducing Ni(OH)_(2).The GdMnO_(2)/Ni(OH)_(2) electrode offers sufficient surface electrochemical activity and exhibits excellent specific capacity of 121.8 mA h g^(-1),at 1A g^(-1),appealing rate performance,and ultralong lifetime stability(99.3%retention after 10,000 discharge tests).Furthermore,the GdMnO_(2)/Ni(OH)_(2)//PVA/KOH//Fe_(3)O_(4)/GO solid-state ASC device offers an impressive specific energy density(60.25 W h kg^(-1))at a high power density(2332 W kg^(-1)).This investigation thus shows its large potential in developing novel approaches to energy storage devices.

The role of grain boundaries in solid-state Li-metal batteries

Despite the potential advantages promised by solid-state batteries,the success of solid-state electrolytes has not yet been fully realised.This is due in part to the lower ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes.In many solid superionic conductors,grain boundaries are found to be ionically resistive and hence contribute to this lower ionic conductivity.Additionally,in spite of the hope that solid electrolytes would inhibit lithium filaments,in most scenarios their growth is still observed,and in some polycrystalline systems this is suggested to occur along grain boundaries.It is apparent that grain boundaries affect the performance of solid-state electrolytes,however a deeper understanding is lacking.In this perspective,the current theories relating to grain boundaries in solid-state electrolytes are explored,as well as addressing some of the challenges which arise when trying to investigate their role.Glasses are presented as a possible solution to reduce the effect of grain boundaries in electrolytes.Future research directions are suggested which will aid in both understanding the role of grain boundaries,and diminishing their contribution in cases where they are detrimental.

The architecture of the(post)studio:Jackson Pollock’s barn and Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory

This article will discuss a false dichotomy between two models,the modern art studio and the post-studio,which oppose the private and the public,the individual and the collective,hiding and the revealing.We will begin by analysing Daniel Buren’s position in his canonical text“Fonction de l’Atelier”and his practice,where the artist defines the foundations of post-studio work.As the text also describes a New York studio type that must be left behind,we will analyse Jackson Pollock’s and Andy Warhol’s workspaces through drawing reconstructions to demonstrate that these meet the defining characteristics of both models.It will be shown that the artists have used design strategies to retain certain aspects of studio culture while exploring others of the post-studio.This turning point reveals that the current belief about the obsolescence of the studio in a global era defined by communication,networking and mobility ignores its emerging post-studio qualities.This work aims to acknowledge this shift,obtaining a critical vision that will allow us to design contemporary workspaces avoiding stereotypical and reductionist approaches.

“轻罪化时代”亟需建构限制轻罪入罪的机制。“但书”规定是现成的实体法方式,但其在轻罪治理实践中陷入瓶颈。可罚的违法性在我国有天然的法规范土壤,为畅通我国《刑法》第13条“但书”条款奠定理论基础。可罚的违法性是指,行为既符合构成要件,又不存在阻却事由,若没有达到可罚的违法性,不成立犯罪。可罚的违法性理论创设之初是用于轻微罪的出罪,其中缓和的违法一元论最契合我国轻罪治理。发展至今,可罚的违法性理论在我国已经异化,不但将刑罚反向融入犯罪成立的判断,而且进一步加深了刑法对前置法的从属性。应当将可罚的违法性单独置于第四阶层,宏观把握轻罪行为的入罪与否,并将可罚的违法性理论贯穿于“但书”规定的司法适用,充分激活“但书”条款在轻罪治理中的潜力。

Surface activity of cancer cells:The fusion of two cell aggregates

A key feature that distinguishes cancer cells from all other cells is their capability to spread throughout the body.Although how cancer cells collectively migrate by following molecular rules which influence the state of cell-cell adhesion contacts has been comprehensively formulated,the impact of physical interactions on cell spreading remains less understood.Cumulative effects of physical interactions exist as the interplay between various physical parameters such as(1)tissue surface tension,(2)viscoelasticity caused by collective cell migration,and(3)solid stress accumulated in the cell aggregate core region.This review aims to point out the role of these physical parameters in cancer cell spreading by considering and comparing the rearrangement of various mono-cultured cancer and epithelial model systems such as the fusion of two cell aggregates.While epithelial cells undergo volumetric cell rearrangement driven by the tissue surface tension,which directs cell movement from the surface to the core region of two-aggregate systems,cancer cells rather perform surface cell rearrangement.Cancer cells migrate toward the surface of the two-aggregate system driven by the solid stress while the surface tension is significantly reduced.The solid stress,accumulated in the core region of the two-aggregate system,is capable of suppressing the movement of epithelial cells that can undergo the jamming state transition;however,this stress enhances the movement of cancer cells.We have focused here on the multi-scale rheological modeling approaches that aimed at reproducing and understanding these biological systems.
