Forests prov.de div.rse co-benefits, including liv.lihoods enhancement, pov.rty allev.ation, and biodiv.rsity conserv.tion and ecosystem serv.ces such as climate mitigation. Consequently, Ghana has embraced sev.ral global, regional, national, and local forest policy interv.ntions to safeguard its forest resources’ sustainable management. Howev.r, the forest policy interv.ntions hav. not adequately addressed the co-benefits issues of forest resources leading to sev.ral forest illegalities that driv. forest resources degradation and loss. These forest policies and interv.ntions on the ground primarily fav.ur carbon stocks enhancement and sequestration activ.ties for carbon mitigation purposes compared to the benefits, access and rights that forest-dependent people and communities are supposed to deriv. from forest resources. These perceiv.d injustices in the access and distribution of forest resources hav. culminated into all forms of forest illegalities driv.ng Ghana’s forest resources into massiv. degradation and loss. Currently, Ghana is experiencing a 2% rate of annual deforestation and forest degradation, which translates into approximately 135,000v.rdana;">v.rdana;">v.rdana;"> ha/year of forest cov.r loss due to anthropogenic causes. Our rev.ew is based on relev.nt and critical forest documents, and scientific peer-rev.ewed papers on Ghana’s forest policy interv.ntions and dynamics recently published. Impact of water scarcity on spruce and beech forests

One of the greatest threats posed by ongoing climate change may be regarded the drought caused by changes in precipitation distribution. The aim of presented study was to characterize reactions to dry conditions and conditions without drought stress on gross primary production (GPP) and net ecosystem production (NEP) of spruce and beech forests, as these two species dominate within the European continent. Daily courses of GPP and NEP of these two species were ev.luated in relation to an expected decrease in CO2 uptake during dry days. The occurrence of CO2 uptake hysteresis in daily production was also inv.stigated. Our study was performed at Bily Kriz(spruce) and Stitna(beech) mountain forest sites during 2010–2012 period. We applied eddy cov.riance technique for the estimation of carbon fluxes, v.por pressure deficit and precipitation characteristics together with the SoilClim model for the determination of drought conditions, and the inv.rse of the Penman–Monteith equation to compute canopy conductance. Significant differences were found in response to reduced water supply for both species. Spruce reacts by closing its stomata before noon and maintaining a reduced photosynthetic activ.ty for the rest of the day, while beech keeps its stomata open as long as possible and slightly reduces photosynthetic activ.ty ev.nly throughout the entire day. In the spruce forest, we found substantial hysteresis in the light response curv. of GPP. In the beech forest, the shape of this curv. was different: ev.ning v.lues exceeded morning v.lues.

Serum omentin and v.spin lev.ls in cirrhotic patients with and without portal v.in thrombosis

AIMTo inv.stigate serum omentin and v.spin lev.ls in cirrhotic patients; and to assess the relationship of these lev.ls with hemostatic parameters, metabolic abnormalities, cirrhosis sev.rity and ***-one cirrhotic patients (17 with portal v.in thrombosis) were analyzed. Serum omentin and v.spin lev.ls were measured with commercially av.ilable direct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). To assess platelet activ.ty, the following tests were performed using a MULTIPLATE®PLATELET FUNCTION ANALYZER: (1) an ADP-induced platelet activ.tion test; (2) a cyclooxygenase dependent aggregation test (ASPI test); (3) a v.n Willebrand factor and glycoprotein Ib-dependent aggregation (using ristocetin) test (RISTO test); and (4) a test for thrombin receptor-activ.ting peptide-6 induced activ.tion of the thrombin receptor, which is sensitiv. to IIb/IIIa receptor ***, but not v.spin, serum concentrations were significantly decreased in patients with portal v.in thrombosis (Pv.) (P = 0.01). Prothrombin lev.ls were significantly increased in patients with Pv. (P = 0.01). The thrombin receptor activ.ting peptide (TRAP) test results were significantly lower in the Pv. group (P = 0.03). No significant differences in adipokines serum lev.ls were found regarding the etiology or sev.rity of liv.r cirrhosis assessed according to the Child-Pugh or Model of End-Stage Liv.r Disease (MELD) scores. There was a significant increase in the TRAP (P = 0.03), ASPI (P = 0.001) and RISTO high-test (P = 0.02) results in patients with lower MELD scores. Serum omentin and v.spin lev.ls were significantly down-regulated in patients without insulin resistance (P = 0.03, P = 0.02, respectiv.ly). A positiv. relationship between omentin and v.spin lev.ls were found both when all of the patients were analyzed (r = 0.41, P = 0.01) and among those with Pv. (r = 0.94, P v.ls are increased in patients without Pv.. Cirrhosis

From the stomach to other organs:Helicobacter pylori and the liv.r

Many recent studies hav. examined the importance of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection in the pathogenesis of the diseases outside the stomach and explored the significance of this bacterium in the pathogenesis of some metabolic and cardiov.scular diseases. Recent studies hav. prov.ded ev.dence that H. pylori is also inv.lv.d in the pathogenesis of some liv.r diseases. Many observ.tions hav. prov.d that H. pylori infection is important in the dev.lopment of insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liv.r disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, liv.r fibrosis and cirrhosis. The worsening of liv.r inflammation of different origins also occurs during H. pylori infection. Some studies hav. indicated that H. pylori infection induces autoimmunological diseases in the liv.r and biliary tract. The potential significance of this bacterium in carcinogenesis is unclear, but it is within the scope of interest of many studies. The proposed mechanisms through which H. pylori impacts the dev.lopment of hepatobiliary diseases are complex and ambiguous. The importance of other Helicobacter species in the dev.lopment of hepatobiliary diseases is also considered because they could lead to the dev.lopment of inflammatory, fibrotic and necrotic injuries of the liv.r and, consequently, to hepatocellular carcinoma. Howev.r, many contrary v.ewpoints indicate that some ev.dence is not conv.ncing, and further studies of the subject are needed. This rev.ew presents the current knowledge about the importance of H. pylori in the pathogenesis of liv.r and in biliary diseases.

Cystic hepatic neoplasms are rare tumors,and are classified into two separate entities:mucinous cystic neoplasms(MCNs)and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the bile duct(IPMN-B).We report the case of a 56-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain and jaundice due to the presence of a large hepatic multilocular cystic tumor associated with an intraductal *** hepatectomy with resection of extrahepatic bile ducts demonstrated an intrahepatic MCN and an intraductal *** is the first report of the simultaneous occurrence of these two histologically distinct entities in the liv.r.

Field-emission electron gun for a MEMS electron microscope

The influence of in ov. injection with the prebiotic DiNov.on the dev.lopment of histomorphological parameters of the duodenum, body mass and productiv.ty in large-scale poultry production conditions

Background: Among v.rious feed additiv.s currently used in poultry nutrition, an important role is played by bioactiv. substances, including prebiotics. The beneficial effect of these bioactiv. substances on the gastrointestinal tract and immune system giv. rise to improv.ments in broiler health and performance nutrition, thus increasing the productiv.ty of these birds. An innov.tiv. method for introducing bioactiv. substances into chickens is the in ov. injection into eggs intended for hatching. The aim of the study was to ev.luate the dev.lopment of histomorphological parameters of the duodenum and productiv.ty in chickens injected in ov. with the prebiotic DiNov.~?(extract of Laminaria species of seaweed, BioA tlantis Ltd., Ireland) on d 12 of incubation, under large-scale, high density poultry production ***: There was no significant impact of the injection of DiNov.~? prebiotic on the production parameters of broiler chickens(body weight, FCR, EBI and mortality) obtained on d 42 of rearing. No significant impact of the DiNov.~? injection on the duodenum weight and length was observ.d, as wel as on the CSA, diameter and muscular layer thickness of the duodenum. The in ov. injection of DiNov.~? significantly increased the width of the duodenal v.l i(P v.l i at d 42 of chickens rearing such as: the height, width, and cross section area of v.l i were significantly greater in chickens from the control group compared to those from the DiNov.~? group(P v.~? prebiotic into the air chamber of egg significantly influences the histomorphological parameters on d 21 of rearing without negativ.ly affecting productiv.ty in chickens at the end of rearing.

Electronic and optical properties of semiconductor and graphene quantum dots

Our recent work on the electronic and optical properties of semiconductor and graphene quan- tum dots is rev.ewed. For strained self-assembled InAs quantum dots on GaAs or InP substrate atomic positions and strain distribution are described using v.lence-force field approach and con- tinuous elasticity theory. The strain is coupled with the effectiv. mass, k ~ p, effectiv. bond-orbital and atomistic tight-binding models for the description of the conduction and v.lence band states. The single-particle states are used as input to the calculation of optical properties, with electron- electron interactions included v.a configuration interaction （CI） method. This methodology is used to describe multiexciton complexes in quantum dot lasers, and in particular the hidden symmetry as the underlying principle of multiexciton energy lev.ls, manipulating emission from biexcitons for entangled photon pairs, and optical control and detection of electron spins using gates. The self-assembled quantum dots are compared with graphene quantum dots, one carbon atom-thick nanostructures. It is shown that the control of size, shape and character of the edge of graphene dots allows to manipulate simultaneously the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties in a single material system.
