Aspects of forest restoration and hydrology:the hydrological function of litter

Although forests play important roles in the hydrological cycle,there is little information that relates the water retention capacity of litter in areas under passive restoration,especially in Cerrado *** study relates litter levels to water holding capacity and effective water retention among forest fragments under different passive restoration stages:46,11,and 8 years to better understand litter hydrological functions in the *** retention capacity and effective water retention capacity of litters(unstructured materials,branches and leaves)in the field were monitored on a monthly *** litter accumulation at 46 years was significantly higher than that of the other succession *** litter mass was significantly higher than that of leaves and *** 46-year stage had the highest water holding capacity in the leaf fraction,followed by unstructured material and *** the water holding capacity was lower in the oldest resto-ration,this site showed the highest efficiency under field *** process was quickly reestablished,as the 11-year restoration showed results closer to that for the 46-year stage in comparison to the area at 8 ***,passive restoration plays a key role in soil water mainte-nance due to the influence of litter in Cerrado *** and the imminent need of restoring degraded sites,highlight the need for further studies focused on bet-ter understanding of the process of forest restoration and its temporal effect on soil water recovery dynamics.

Soil salinity is among the abiotic stressors that threaten agriculture the most,and purslane(Portulaca oleracea L.)is a dicot species adapted to inland salt desert and saline habitats that hyper accumulates salt and has high phytoremediation *** researchers consider purslane a suitable model species to study the mechanisms of plant tolerance to drought and salt ***,a robust salinity stress protocol was developed and used to characterize the morphophysiological responses of young purslane plants to salinity stress;then,leaf tissue underwent characterization by distinct omics platforms to gain further insights into its response to very high salinity *** salinity stress protocol did generate different levels of stress by gradients of electrical conductivity at field capacity and water potential in the saturation extract of the substrate,and the morphological parameters indicated three distinct stress *** expected from a halophyte species,these plants remained alive under very high levels of salinity stress,showing salt crystal-like structures constituted mainly by Na^(+),Cl^(−),and K^(+)on and around closed stomata.A comprehensive and large-scale metabolome and transcriptome single and integrated analyses were then employed using leaf *** multi-omics integration(MOI)system analysis led to a data-set of 51 metabolic pathways with at least one enzyme and one metabolite differentially expressed due to salinity *** data sets(of genes and metabolites)are valuable for future studies aimed to deepen our knowledge on the mechanisms behind the high tolerance of this species to salinity *** conclusion,besides showing that this species applies salt exclusion already in young plants to support very high levels of salinity stress,the initial analysis of metabolites and transcripts data sets already give some insights into other salt tolerance mechanisms used by this species to support high levels of salinity stress.

以Vulcan XC-72炭为载体,采用硼氢化钠还原法制备了Pd-TiO_(2)/C电催化剂用于直接丙三醇燃料电池阳极材料,并用能量色散谱(EDX)、X射线衍射(XRD)、透射电子显微镜(TEM)、循环伏安法(CV)、计时电流法(I-t)和全反射-傅里叶变换红外光谱(ATR-FTIR)对催化剂进行了表征。EDX结果表明,Pd-TiO_(2)/C中Pd和Ti含量接近名义原子比。Pd-TiO_(2)的X射线衍射结果表明,Pd具有面心立方fcc结构,同时TiO_(2)展现出四方结构的锐钛矿相的峰特征。TEM图像显示Pd和TiO_(2)纳米颗粒在碳载体中分布均匀并存在一些簇状区域,纳米颗粒大小为7.0-8.0 nm。循环伏安显示在1 mol/L KOH电解液中催化剂Pd-TiO_(2)/C在约-0.7 V vs Ag/AgCl有明显的析氢行为和电容增加现象,表明催化剂在TiO_(2)修饰后活性明显增加。通过循环伏安对碱性体系的丙三醇电催化氧化表明,Pd-TiO_(2)/C(70∶30)显示了非常好的催化活性:起始氧化电位也变得更负达到-0.4V vs Ag/AgCl,氧化电流达到14.91 mA/cm,优于Pd-TiO_(2)/C(90∶10)的9.37 mA/cm和Pd-TiO_(2)/C(50∶50)的4.88 mA/cm,明显高于Pd/C和TiO_(2)/C的1.88和0.55 mA/cm。I-t实验表明1000 s之前Pd-TiO_(2)/C展现出最高的电流密度,但在1000 s后电流密度有一定程度的下降,表明催化剂的催化活性很高但长期稳定性方面需要进一步提升。在碱性直接丙三醇燃料电池中进行的实验表明,所制备的Pd-TiO_(2)/C(50∶50)、Pd-TiO_(2)/C(70∶30)和Pd-TiO_(2)/C(90∶10)对甘油的电化学氧化性能均优于Pd/C电催化剂,其中,Pd-TiO_(2)/C(70∶30)的催化活性最好:开路电压达到817 mV,最大功率密度达到12.5mW/cm,高于Pd-TiO_(2)/C(50∶50)的12.4mW/cm、Pd-TiO_(2)/C(90∶10)的7.9mW/cm、Pd/C的3.7mW/cm以及TiO_(2)/C的2.25 mW/cm,这表明,TiO_(2)对Pd/C催化剂有很好的促进作用,这种协同效应可以归因为TiO_(2)对Pd的电子效应和双功能机理,同时Pd和TiO_(2)比例为70∶30时,其催化性能达到最优。ATR-FTIR结果表明,反应后所有Pd-TiO_(2)/C电催化剂表面均有甘油醛、羟丙酮酸、甲酸等高附加值产物生成,为直接丙三醇燃料电池电-化学品联产提供一定的依据。

On the impact of grinding conditions in the flotation of semi-soluble salt-type mineral-containing ores driven by surface or particle geometry effects?

Grinding and flotation processes are often studied independently, despite the well-established grinding influence on flotation performance, which affects not only particle size and thus liberation but also shape and leads to complex changes in pulp chemistry affecting the particle surface properties relevant for selective bubble attachment. Yet, no study jointly investigated these possible causes and many are limited to single mineral flotation. We relate grinding conditions to changes in pulp chemistry and particle surface properties and assess their impact on upgrading. We studied three non-sulfide ores with different feed grades and valuables: scheelite, apatite, and fluorite. These were dry-, wet-, and wet conditionedground before flotation in a laboratory mechanical cell. Results were evaluated with bulk-and particle-specific methodologies. The selectivity of the process is higher after dry grinding for the fluorite and apatite ores and irrelevant for the scheelite ore. Variations in flotation kinetics of individual particles associated to their size and shape are not sufficient to explain these results. The higher concentration of Ca2+and Mg2+observed in the pulp after wet grinding, altering particle surface properties, better explains the phenomenon. Additionally, we demonstrate how particle shape impacts are system specific and related to both entrainment and true flotation.

This new Commission was formed to continue IUGS activities in the environment following the closure of the IUGS Commission on Geological Sciences for Environmental Planning(COGEOENVIRONMENT) which had completed its term (refer to separate article in this issue).

Decoupling the role of chemistry and microstructure in hMSCs response to an osteoinductive calcium phosphate ceramic

Calcium phosphates(CaP)are widely used synthetic bone graft substitutes,having bioactivity that is regulated by a set of intertwined physico-chemical and structural *** some CaPs have shown to be as effective in regenerating large bone defects as autologous bone,there is still the need to understand the role of individual material properties in CaP ***,we aimed to decouple the effects of chemical composition and surface-microstructure of a beta-tricalcium phosphate(TCP)ceramic,with proven osteoinductive potential,on human mesenchymal stromal cells(hMSCs)*** this end,we replicated the surface structure of the TCP ceramic into polylactic acid without inorganic additives,or containing the chemical constituents of the ceramic,i.e.,a calcium salt,a phosphate salt,or TCP *** microstructure of the different materials was characterized by confocal laser *** were cultured on the materials,and the expression of a set of osteogenic genes was *** cell culture medium was collected and the levels of calcium and phosphate ions were quantified by inductively-coupled plasma mass *** results revealed that none of the tested combinations of properties in polymer/composite replicas was as potent in supporting the osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs as the original ***,we observed some effects of the surface structure in the absence of inorganics,as well as combined effects of surface structure and the added salts,in particular calcium,on osteogenic *** approach presented here can be used to study the role of independent properties in other CaP-based biomaterials.

Pramipexole, a dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist, attenuates reserpine-induced fibromyalgia-like model in mice

Fibromyalgia(FM) is a complex pathology described as persistent hyperalgesia including somatic and mood dysfunctions, depression and anxiety. Although the etiology of FM is still unknown, a significant decrease in biogenic amines is a common characteristic in its pathogenesis. Here, our main objective was to investigate the role of dopamine D3/D2 receptor during the reserpine-induced pain in mice. Our results showed that pramipexole(PPX) – a dopaminergic D3/D2 receptor agonist – inhibited mechanical allodynia and thermal sensitivity induced by reserpine. Relevantly, PPX treatment decreased immobility time and increased the number of grooming in the forced swimming test and splash test, respectively. Animals that received PPX remained longer in the open arms than the reserpine group using elevated plusmaze apparatus. The repeated PPX administration, given daily for 4 days, significantly blocked the mechanical and thermal allodynia during FM model, similarly to pregabalin, although it failed to affect the reserpine-induced thermal nociception. Reserpine administration induced significant downregulation of dopamine concentration in the central nervous system, and repeated treatment with PPX restored dopamine levels in the frontal cortex and spinal cord tissues. Moreover, PPX treatment inhibited oxidants production such as DCFH(2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein) and nitrite, also decreased oxidative damage(carbonyl), and upregulated the activity of superoxide dismutase in the spinal cord. Together, our findings demonstrated the ability of dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist in reducing pain and mood dysfunction allied to FM in mice. All experimental protocols were approved by the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina(UFSC) Ethics Committee(approval No. 2572210218) on May 10, 2018.

Coupling together the ferroelectric,pyroelectric,and photovoltaic characteristics within a single material is a novel way to improve the performance of *** this work,we take advantage of the triple multifunctionality shown by 0.5Ba(Zr_(0.2)Ti_(0.8))O_(3)-0.5(Ba_(0.7)Ca_(0.3))TiO_(3)(BCZT),as demonstrated in an Al/Si/SiOx/BCZT/ITO thin-film *** Si/SiOx acts as an n-type layer to form a metal-ferroelectric-insulator-semiconductor heterostructure with the BCZT,and with Al and ITO as *** photo-response of the device,with excitation from a violet laser(405 nm wavelength),is carefully investigated,and it is shown that the photodetector performance is invariant with the chopper frequency owing to the pyro-phototronic effect,which corresponds to the coupling together of the pyroelectric and photovoltaic ***,the photodetector performance was significantly better than that of the devices operating based only on the pyro-phototronic effect by a factor of 4,due to the presence of ferroelectricity in the ***,after a poling voltage of−15 V,for a laser power density of 230mW/cm^(2)and at a chopper frequency of 400Hz,optimized responsivity,detectivity,and sensitivity values of 13.1mA/W,1.7×10^(10)jones,and 26.9,respectively,are ***,ultrafast rise and fall times of 2.4 and 1.5μs,respectively,are obtained,which are 35,000 and 36,000 times faster rise and fall responses,respectively,than previous reports of devices with the ferro-pyro-phototronic *** is understood based on the much faster ferroelectric switching in ferroelectric thin films owing to the predominant 180°domains in a single direction out of plane.

This review highlights some established and some more contemporary mechanisms responsible for heart failure(HF)-induced skeletal muscle wasting and *** first describe the effects of HF on the relationship between protein synthesis and degradation rates,which determine muscle mass,the involvement of the satellite cells for continual muscle regeneration,and changes in myofiber calcium homeostasis linked to contractile *** then highlight key mechanistic effects of both aerobic and resistance exercise training on skeletal muscle in HF and outline its application as a beneficial ***,HF causes multiple impairments related to autophagy,anabolic-catabolic signaling,satellite cell proliferation,and calcium homeostasis,which together promote fiber atrophy,contractile dysfunction,and impaired *** both wasting and weakness are partly rescued by aerobic and resistance exercise training in HF,the effects of satellite cell dynamics remain poorly explored.

Disaster communication guidelines emphasize that journalists should be aware of past major disasters and draw lessons from the coverage of those *** press is an important source for the evolution of historical disaster and risk research paradigms over *** study explored the top 10 damaging hydrogeomorphological events in Portugal selected from the disaster database,which includes events that caused human damages(fatalities,injured,missing,evacuated,and displaced)reported over a period of 151years(1865–2015)by the Portuguese newspaper Diário de Notícias(DN).News analysis was guided by the news *** analysis of the news published in DN enabled us to identify textual marks that present interconnections in the journalistic coverage and produce discursive standards for these *** textual marks were associated with the hazard and risk *** discursive standards of DN did not clearly reflect the ruptures in the hazard *** a rule,the journalistic reports contributed to the naturalization of disasters and the gap in public understanding of risks,by presenting an approach focused on relief actions—ignoring social issues,vulnerability,and population resilience—reducing the discourse of preparedness for future disasters.
