Exploring the depths of the global earth observation system of systems

This paper explores for the first time the contents,structure and relationships across institutions and disciplines of a global Big Earth Data cyber-infrastructure:the Global Earth Observation System of System(GEOSS).The analysis builds on 1.8 million metadata records harvested in *** this set includes almost all the major large data collections in GEOSS,the analysis represents more than 80%of all the data made available through this global *** explore two major aspects:the collaborative networks and the thematic coverage in *** first connects the contributing organisations through the more than 200,000 keywords used in the systems,and then explores who is citing whom,a proxy for of institutional *** thematic coverage is analysed through neural network algorithms,first on the keywords,and then on the corpus of 653 million lemmatised lower case words built from the titles and abstracts of all 1.8 million metadata *** findings not only give a good overview of the GEOSS data universe,but offer immediate priorities on how to increase the usability of GEOSS through improved data management,and the opportunity to augment the metadata with high level concept that synthetise well the contents of the data-set.

DNA origami is a promising technology for its reproducibility,flexibility,scalability and *** the several potential applications,DNA origami has been proposed as a tool for drug delivery and as a contrast agent,since a conformational change upon specific target interaction may be used to release a drug or produce a physical signal,***,its conformation should be robust with respect to the properties of the medium in which either the recognition or the read-out take place,such as pressure,viscosity and any other unspecific interaction other than the desired target *** we report on the read-out robustness of a tetragonal DNA-origami/gold-nanoparticle hybrid structure able to change its configuration,which is transduced in a change of its plasmonic properties,upon interaction with a specific DNA *** investigated its response when analyzed in three different media:aqueous solution,solid support and viscous *** show that,once a conformational variation is produced,it remains unaffected by the subsequent physical interactions with the environment.

This paper is the second of a series that describes some of the main dataset resources presently shared through the GEOSS platform. The GEOSS platform was created as the technological tool to implement interoperability among the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS);it is a brokering infrastructure that presently brokers more than 190 autonomous data catalogs and information systems. This paper is focused on the analysis of the NextGEOSS datasets describing the data publishing process from NextGEOSS to the GEOSS platform. In particular, both the administrative registration and the technical registration were taken into consideration. One of the most important data shared by the GEOSS platform are the NextGEOSS datasets: the present study provides some insights in terms of GEOSS user searches for NextGEOSS data.

Multi-species habitat models highlight the key importance of flooded reedbeds for inland wetland birds: implications for management and conservation

Background: Inland wetlands are crucial for biodiversity conservation, especially in highly-urbanized landscapes. In the European Union, many wetlands are included in the EU ‘Natura 2000’ network, the main tool for biodiversity conservation over the continent, which requires the development of site-specific management plans. Clear and feasible recommendations are necessary to provide site managers with effective tools for the maintenance of biodiversity in these unstable environments. Birds are excellent umbrella species, therefore a management targeted at increasing habitat suitability for focal bird species would likely benefit broader wetland biological communities. Methods: During spring–summer 2017, we collected presence/absence data for 10 bird species of conservation interest at a site scale for 21 Natura 2000 sites. We also carried out a point count survey to detect presence/absence of four reedbed-dwelling species at 75 points. At the site level, we estimated landscape characteristics from regional GISlayers, whereas fine-scaled habitat composition was recorded on the field within a 100 m-buffer around the 75 points. We analysed the effect of the extent of different habitats on species’ occurrence probability by means of multi-species binomial multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) at both scales. We also run species-specific MARS models to compare their performance with those of multi-species models. Results: At the site scale, the extent of the reedbeds/mires was positively associated with the occurrence of all species of conservation concern. At the point-count scale, reedbed extent positively predicted species’ occurrence, but only in presence of patches of clear shallow water. Species-specific MARS models showed qualitatively similar results for some species, but generally were outperformed by multi-species ones. Association of homocysteine and smoking with cerebral microemboli in patients with mechanical heart valves:a transcranial Doppler study

Objectives Microembolic signals(MES)on transcranial Doppler(TCD)predict stroke and cognitive *** levels of total homocysteine(tHcy),a prothrombotic factor,are higher in patients with microemboli in carotid stenosis and in patients with paradoxical *** this study we assessed the association between the level of tHcy and the number of MES in patients with mechanical heart valves(MHVs).Methods TCD monitoring was performed to detect MES before and after breathing 100% oxygen and repeated every 2-4 weeks up to six *** Twenty-five patients with MHVs(mean age:63.60±10.15 years)participated in this study;15 were men(66.47±7.25 years)and 10 were women(59.30±12.60 years).In total,there were 126 study *** multiple regression,higher tHcy was associated with more MES in both preoxygenation(OR 1.34(95%CI 1.07 to 1.68,p=0.009))and postoxygenation(OR 1.40(95% CI 1.07 to 1.83,p=0.01))*** smoking and the length of time between the operation and monitoring also correlated with a higher number of MES before and after breathing oxygen,particularly in *** Higher tHcy and smoking were associated with a higher MES count in both preoxygenation and postoxygenation *** smoking can be stopped and hyperhomocysteinaemia is treatable,these are clinically important findings.

ON COUNTING THE FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION OF STRING MOTIFS IN MOLECULAR SEQUENCES

This work investigates frequency distributions of strings within a text. The mathematical derivation accounts for variable alphabet size, character probabilities, and string/text lengths, under both the Bernoullian and the Markovian model for string generation. The analysis is limited to the set of nonclumpable strings, that cannot overlap with them selves. Two formulae （exact and approximated） are derived, calculating the frequency distribution of a string of length m found inside a text of length n （with m 〈： n）. The approximated formula has a constant complexity （in contrast to an exponential com plexity of the exact） and makes it applicable to very long texts. The proposed formulae were applied to analyze string frequencies in a portion of the human genome, and to recalculate frequencies of known repeated motif within genes, associated to genetic dis eases. A comparison with stateoftheart methods was provided. The formulae presentedhere can be of use in the statistical evaluation of specific motif frequencies within very long texts （e.g. genes or genomes） and help in characterizing motifs in pathologic conditions.

Fluorination of suspended graphene

Suspended graphene is exposed to different fluorine-containing species produced by a plasma source fed with CF4 precursor gas. We investigate the fluorination process by selecting two different kinetic energies for the ions striking the graphene surface. The chemical-bonding environment is discussed, and the control of the graphene-fluorination homogeneity is investigated at the individual graphene sheets. The modifications of the electronic and structural properties are examined by scanning photoelectron microscopy, micro-Raman analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results are compared with those obtained for supported graphene on copper. Suspended graphene provides a quasi-ideal model for investigating the intrinsic properties of irradiated carbon nano-systems while avoiding damage due to backscattered atoms and recoil due to a supporting substrate.
