Does kinship affect spatial organization in a small and isolated population of a solitary felid: The Eurasian lynx?

Social organization in wild carnivores is mostly determined by patterns of family bonds,which may shape the degree of relatedness among individuals in the *** studied kinship in a small and isolated population of a solitary carnivore,the Eurasian lynx(Lynx lynx)to evaluate its effect on spatial distribution of *** investigated the relationship between spatial location and pair-wise kinship among 28 lynx individuals identified in 2004-2011 by telemetry,non-invasive sampling and genotyping with the use of 12 autosomal microsatellites in the Białowieża Primeval Forest,*** average relatedness of the lynx population was relatively low(Lynch and Ritland’s R=0.03).Females were significantly more related to each other than males with other *** inferred pedigree showed that the population was dominated by only 2 familial *** did not find significant correlations between the relatedness and the extent of home range overlap or the straight-line distances between the home ranges’central *** results suggest that the dynamics of kinship in this solitary felid may not differ from the random mating processes described in social *** the chances of random mating could be limited to a few resident males and females,the presence of unrelated floaters may provide a“breeding buffer”that may prevent an increase of relatedness and likely inbreeding in the pop*** system is likely to fail in preserving genetic diversity in small,highly isolated populations;therefore,restoring habitat connectivity is crucial to ensure sufficient immigration from neighboring populations.

Metabolomics characterization of colostrum in three sow breeds and its influences on piglets' survival and litter growth rates

Background: Colostrum is the first secretion produced by mammary glands during the hours immediately preceding and succeeding parturition. This secretion differs from milk and represents an essential vehicle of passive immunity,prebiotic compounds and growth factors involved in intestinal development. Most of the literature concerning colostrum composition refers mainly to human and cow; and little is known about pig colostrum metabolome and how it varies between pig breeds and different farrowing parity. Thus, the aim of the present research is to provide new information about pig colostrum composition and the associations between metabolites, the sows' breed and the survival and growth rates of their ***: Colostrum samples were gathered from 58 parturitions of sows belonging to three different breeds chosen for their importance in Italian heavy pig production: 31 Large White, 15 Landrace and 12 Duroc respectively. The defatted and ultrafiltered colostrum samples were analysed using1 H–NMR spectroscopy. Principal Components Analysis(PCA) was assessed on the obtained spectra. In addition, using a Stepwise Regression and a Linear Regression analyses the metabolites named after the signals assignment were tested for their associations with piglets' ***-five metabolites were identified, comprehending monosaccharides, disaccharides(such as lactose), organic acids(lactate, citrate, acetate and formate), nitrogenous organic acids(such as creatine) and other compounds,including nucleotides. PCA results evidence a clustering due to breed and season effects. Lactose was the main compound determining the assignment of the samples into different clusters according to the sow breed. Furthermore, some metabolites showed to be associated with piglets' performance and survival traits: acetate and taurine were positively related to litter weight gain and piglets' survival rate, respectively, while dimethylamine and cis-aconitate were linked to new-borns'

Safety Evaluation of New Polymer Materials Proposed for Relining Drinking Water Pipes in the City of Milano

Relining is a trenchless technology of recoating the inside walls of damaged water pipes using composite materials. In the Safe Pipe project, co-financed by Regione Lombardia, alternative polymeric materials for relining the drinking water distribution system of the city of Milan have been developed. Relining polymers have been evaluated for their toxicity. The identification of product impurities was performed by HPLC/HRMS and GC/MS analysis and safety evaluation was conducted applying toxicity data, when available, or applying QSAR models. Results showed low level of toxic substances in polymerized resins and in water samples in a migration/leaching test performed in a field experiment.

Background:Pulmonary hamartoma(PH)is the most common benign pulmonary tumor usually presenting as a solitary,well-demarcated nodule composed of mature cartilage and adipose *** unusual histologic variants are challenging on clinic-radiologic and pathologic ***:We collected a multicentric,retrospective,consecutive series of 206 PH with clinical characteristics and histologic ***:Clinical data were in line with the literature demonstrating a male prevalence(2:1)and a median age of 61.6 *** median size of the nodule was 17.8 *** performed,SUVmax>2.5 at FDC-PET was evidenced in 4%of cases(5 out of 119)and was significantly associated with undifferentiated/myxoid *** histology showing chondroid or chondro-lipomatous PH was quoted in 186 cases(90%),while leiomyomatous and undifferentiated/myxoid variants were recorded in 20 cases(10%).The high rate of unusual variants on pathology is possibly related to a selection bias due to external consultations or surgical excision of the lesions lacking classic features at imaging ***:About 10% of PH may show unusual histology and SUVmax>2.5 at FDC-PET in 4%.These uncommon findings may challenge the correct recognition,raising some concerns in terms of differential diagnosis with several other mesenchymal tumors in the *** features should be kept in mind to achieve a correct diagnosis and avoid unnecessary invasive treatments.
