In healthy individuals,the intestinal epithelium forms a tight barrier to prevent gut bacteria from reaching blood *** study the effect of probiotics,dietary compounds and drugs on gut barrier formation and disruption,human gut epithelial and bacterial cells can be cocultured in an in vitro model called the human microbial crosstalk(HuMiX)gut-on-a-chip ***,we present the design,fabrication and integration of thin-film electrodes into the HuMiX platform to measure transepithelial electrical resistance(TEER)as a direct readout on barrier tightness in *** various aspects of the HuMiX platform have already been set in their design,such as multiple compressible layers,uneven surfaces and nontransparent materials,a novel fabrication method was developed whereby thin-film metal electrodes were first deposited on flexible substrates and sequentially integrated with the HuMiX system via a transfer-tape ***,to measure localized TEER along the cell culture chamber,we integrated multiple electrodes that were connected to an impedance analyzer via a *** further developed a dynamic normalization method because the active measurement area depends on the measured TEER *** fabrication process and system setup can be applicable to other barrier-on-chip *** a proof-of-concept,we measured the barrier formation of a cancerous Caco-2 cell.l.ne in real-time,which was mapped at four spatially separated positions along the HuMiX culture area.

Effect of low concentration electrolytes on the formation and corrosion resistance of PEO coatings on AM50 magnesium alloy

In this paper,the formation process,morphology,and electrochemical performance of PEO coatings on AM50 magnesium alloy prepared in low concentration phosphate,aluminate,and phosphate-aluminate electrolytes were systematically *** results show that the coatings prepared from the phosphate electrolytes have a higher thickness and better corrosion resistance properties compared to the other *** coatings prepared from low concentration phosphate-aluminate mixed electrolytes have slightly thinner thickness,a similar coating structure and an order of magnitude lower value of electrochemical impedance compared with phosphate electrolyte *** Coatings prepared from low concentration aluminate electrolytes have the lowest thickness and the worst corrosion resistance properties which gets close to corrosion behavior of the bare AM50 under the same test *** application,coatings prepared from single low concentration phosphate electrolytes and low concentration phosphate-aluminate electrolytes have greater potential than single low concentration aluminate ***,reducing the electrolyte concentrations of coating forming ions too much has negative influence on the coating growth rate.

lDH sealing for PEO coated friction stir welded AZ31/AA5754 materials

The need to combine various metals in light-weight constructions requires the development of coatings that prevent galvanic corrosion. layered double hydroxides(lDHs) can be an example of such coatings, which were previously successfully obtained in situ on individual materials. In addition, the possibility of lDH growth(including lDH growth in the presence of chelating agents) on the surface of plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)-coated metals was previously shown. This PEO + lDH combination could improve both corrosion and mechanical characteristics of the system. The possibility of lDHs formation in situ on the surface of PEO-coated friction stir welded(FSW) magnesium-aluminum materials(AZ31/AA5754 system was selected as a model one) was demonstrated in the presence of 1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid(DHPTA) as a chelating agent, which was selected based on analysis of respective metal.l.gand compounds stability. lDHs growth was achieved under ambient pressure without addition of carbonates in the electrolyte. The effectiveness of the resulting coating is shown both for corrosion resistance and hardness.

Selenium(Se)in paddy rice is one of the significant sources of human Se ***,the effect of arsenic(As)pollution in soil on the translocation of Se species in rice plants is *** this research,a pot experiment was designed to examine the effect of the addition of 50 mg As/kg soil as arsenite or arsenate on the migration of Se species from soil to indica Minghui 63 and *** results showed that the antagonism between inorganic As and Se was closely related to the rice cultivar and Se oxidation state in *** to the standalone selenate treatment,arsenite significantly(plation of selenocystine,selenomethionine and selenate in the roots,stems,sheaths,leaves,brans and kernels of both cultivars by 21.4%-100.0%,40.0%-100.0%,41.0%-100%,5.4%-96.3%,11.3%-100.0% and 26.2%-39.7% respectively,except for selenocystine in the kernels of indica Minghui 63 and selenomethionine in the leaves of indica Minghui 63 and the stems of indica *** also decreased(plation of selenocystine,selenomethionine and selenate in the roots,stems,brans and kernels of both cultivars by 34.9%-100.0%,30.2%-100.0%,11.3%-100.0% and 5.6%-39.6%respectively,except for selenate in the stems of indica Minghui ***,relative to the standalone selenite treatment,arsenite and arsenate decreased(plation of selenocystine,selenomethionine and selenite only in the roots of indica Minghui 63 by 45.5%-100.0%.Our results suggested that arsenite and arsenate had better antagonism toward Se species in selenate-added soil than that in selenite-added soil;moreover,arsenite had a higher inhibiting effect on the accumulation of Se species than arsenate.

Chitin powder and chitin-aerogel were prepared from shrimp wastes and used to uptake Y^(3+)from aqueous solutions and concentrate this rare earth element from phosphogypsum(PG).Chitin aerogel displays a specific surface area of 945 m^(2)/g,while chitin powder is 3.6 m^(2)/g,which largely influences its adsorption *** the adsorption in synthetic solutions,the effect of pH on Y^(3+)removal is strong for chitin powder *** contrast,no big pH influence was detected for chitin *** interactions and chelation can highlight the proposed mechanism of Y^(3+)on chitin adsorbents for the powder and ***,in addition to these interactions,pore filling/pore diffusion is the main mechanism of Y^(3+)removal in the chitin *** aerogel is efficient in concentrating 8 times the Y^(3+)from PG,a very complex *** complex chitin aerogel-Y^(3+)can be a secondary source of rare earth elements for other applications.

Blood metal concentrations and cardiac structure and function in total joint arthroplasty patients

BACKGROUND There is concern regarding potential.l.ng-term cardiotoxicity with systemic distribution of metals in total joint arthroplasty(TJA)*** To determine the association of commonly used implant metals with echocardiographic measures in TJA *** The study comprised 110 TJA patients who had a recent history of high chromium,cobalt or titanium *** underwent two-dimensional,three-dimensional,Doppler and speckle-strain transthoracic echocardiography and a blood draw to measure metal *** and sex-adjusted linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the association of metal concentrations(exposure)with echocardiographic measures(outcome).RESUlTS Higher cobalt concentrations were associated with increased left ventricular end-diastolic volume(estimate 5.09;95%CI:0.02-10.17)as well as left atrial and right ventricular dilation,particularly in men but no changes in cardiac *** titanium concentrations were associated with a reduction in left ventricle global.l.ngitudinal strain(estimate 0.38;95%CI:0.70 to 0.06)and cardiac index(estimate 0.08;95%CI,-0.15 to-0.01).CONClUSION Elevated cobalt and titanium concentrations may be associated with structural and functional cardiac changes in some *** studies are warranted to better understand the systemic effects of metals in TJA patients.

The report highlights the signiﬁcant progress over various regions with respect to understanding of coastal hazards,numerical modeling techniques and the generation&dissemination of coastal hazard warnings and *** developments over various regions in the globe during 2014–18 have been discussed in this report as presented during 10th Session of International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones(IWTC-X)at Bali,*** speciﬁcally,various regions have started to confront the uncertainty that cannot be removed from TC analyses and forecasts and further communicate those hazards within the context of risk[probabilistic]based *** also includes impact-based forecasts such as communicating coastal inundation information relative to total water level instead of storm surge,speciﬁcally(i.e.,anomaly from as-tronomical tide and waves).lastly,updates to model grid conﬁguration,model resolution,and coupled dynamical systems continue to resolve the costal hazards more *** approaches have likely helped reduce loss of life relative to historical ***,regions agree that the generation and dissemination of coastal hazard information still need to be improved in view of growing population along the coast and thus increased exposure of life to coastal hazard.
