Suppression of Tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) is a member of the interleukin (IL)-1 receptor family. The ST2 receptor exists in two isoforms - ST2 ligand (ST2L) and soluble ST2 (sST2). ST2L is a membrane receptor and sST2 is a truncated receptor which is soluble in the blood, allowing it to be detected in serum. IL-33 is a member of the IL-1 family of ligand and is the functional ligand of ST2L receptor. It binds to the ST2L, thereby mediating its immune function.

Ventricular tachy-arrhythmias are the commonest cause of sudden cardiac death in patients with ischemic heart disease. It is estimated that up to 20% patients with acute myocardial infarction suffer from these arrhythmias. There is a growing need for developing tools for risk assessment for sudden cardiac death (SCD) in this population. Several ECG indices have been proposed for risk stratification and for prognostication after myocardial infarction (MI). These can divided broadly into those based on repolarization, conduction or both, as reviewed recently. Repolarization indices include QT interval, QT dispersion, T_(peak)-T_(end) interval, T_(peak)-T_(end)/QT ratio, JT_(peak)/JT, (T_(peak)-T_(end))/JT_(peak) and T_(peak)/JT ratios. Conduction indices include QRS duration and QRS dispersion. Conduction-repolarization indices are exemplified by index of Cardiac Electrophysiological Balance (iCEB: QT/QRS), and QRS-T angle, amongst others.

Autologous treatment for ALS with implication for broad neuroprotection

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by a progressive loss of motor neurons (MNs), leading to paralysis, respiratory failure and death within 2-5 years of diagnosis. The exact mechanisms of sporadic ALS, which comprises 90% of all cases, remain unknown. In familial ALS, mutations in superoxide dismutase (SOD1) cause 10% of cases. Methods: ALS patient-derived human-induced pluripotent stem cells (ALS hiPScs, harboring the SOD1AV4 mutation), were differentiated to MNs (ALS-MNs). The neuroprotective effects of conditioned medium (CM) of hEScs (H9), wt hiPScs (WTC-11) and the ALS iPScs, on MN apoptosis and viability, formation and maintenance of neurites, mitochon-drial activity and expression of inflammatory genes, were examined. For in vivo studies, 200 μl of CM from the ALS iPScs (cs07 and cs053) was injected subcutaneously into the ALS model mice (transgenic for the human SOD1G93A mutation). Animal agility and strength, muscle innervation and mass, neurological score, onset of paralysis and lifes-pan of the ALS mice were assayed. After observing significant disease-modifying effects, the CM was characterized biochemically by fractionation, comparative proteomics, and epigenetic screens for the dependence on pluripotency. CM of fibroblasts that were differentiated from the wt hiPScs lacked any neuroprotective activity and was used as a negative control throughout the studies. Results: The secretome of PScs including the ALS patient iPScs was neuroprotective in the H2O2 model. In the model with pathogenic SOD1 mutation, ALS iPSC-CM attenuated all examined hallmarks of ALS pathology, rescued human ALS-MNs from denervation and death, restored mitochondrial health, and reduced the expression of inflam-matory genes. The ALS iPSC-CM also improved neuro-muscular health and function, and delayed paralysis and mor-bidity in ALS mice. Rapid,accurate and high-throughput sizing and quantification of particulate matter(PM)in air is crucial for monitoring and improving air *** fact,particles in air with a diameter of≤2.5μm have been classified as carcinogenic by the World Health *** we present a field-portable cost-effective platform for high-throughput quantification of particulate matter using computational lens-free microscopy and *** platform,termed c-Air,is also integrated with a smartphone application for device control and display of *** mobile device rapidly screens 6.5 L of air in 30 s and generates microscopic images of the aerosols in *** provides statistics of the particle size and density distribution with a sizing accuracy of~93%.We tested this mobile platform by measuring the air quality at different indoor and outdoor environments and measurement times,and compared our results to those of an Environmental Protection Agency–approved device based on beta-attenuation monitoring,which showed strong correlation to c-Air ***,we used c-Air to map the air quality around Los Angeles International Airport(LAX)over 24 h to confirm that the impact of LAX on increased PM concentration was present even at 47 km away from the airport,especially along the direction of landing *** its machinelearning-based computational microscopy interface,c-Air can be adaptively tailored to detect specific particles in air,for example,various types of pollen and mold and provide a cost-effective mobile solution for highly accurate and distributed sensing of air quality.
