First Quantitative Estimates of Carbon Retention by Citrus Groves under Cuba’s Conditions

Citrus is one of the major fruit crops in Cuba. Its perennial nature, the planted area and the time of productive exploitation turn it into a potential sink of atmospheric carbon. The present study was focused on the obtainment of two models that allow the quantitative estimation of carbon retention by citrus groves. The research was done in two commercial groves: orange [Citrus sinensis (L) Osbeck] cv. “Valencia Late” and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) cv. “marsh Seedless” both on sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) and planted on a typical red ferralitic soil of Artemisa province. Groves are located at 22°55' North and 82°40' West. Cuba’s climate is tropical, seasonally humid, with sea influence and semicontinentality features. Three issues were dealt with: 1) Determination of the total mean quantity of retained carbon by the aerial part of the trees using a destructive sampling method (Pattern Method) to estimate: the total volume of the tree, wood densities and green and dry biomass;2) Determination of the total mean quantity of retained carbon by the aerial part of the trees using two Allometric Methods;and 3) Determination of the most effective Allometric Method to estimate the carbon retention by the aerial part of the trees. From the results, it is concluded that the evaluated methods were effective to reach a first quantitative approximation to carbon retention by citrus groves and under equal conditions, the Allometric Method 2 was more accurate to estimate the Total Carbon Content in “Valencia Late” orange, while for “marsh Seedless” grapefruit the Allometric Method 1 provided the best estimate.

Bleeding risk stratification in an era of aggressive management of acute coronary syndromes

Major bleeding is currently one of the most common non-cardiac complications observed in the treatment of patients with acute coronary syndrome(ACS). Hemorrhagic complications occur with a frequency of 1% to 10% during treatment for ACS. In fact, bleeding events are the most common extrinsic complication associated with ACS therapy. The identification of clinical characteristics and particularities of the antithrombin therapy associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic complications would make it possible to adopt prevention strategies, especially among those exposed to greater risk. The international societies of cardiology renewed emphasis on bleeding risk stratification in order to decide strategy and therapy for patients with ACS. With this review, we performed an update about the ACS bleeding risk scores most frequently used in daily clinical practice.

A system for calculating the merchantable volume of oak trees in the northwest of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico

The taper functions of Kozak （1988）, Bi （2000） and Fang et al. （2000） were comparatively analyzed in the present paper to develop a system for calculating the merchantable volume of oaks in the northwestern region of the state of Chihuahua （Mexico）. Taper data corresponding to 298 trees were collected in mixed and uneven-aged pine-oak stands located throughout the study area, and covering the cxisting range of ages, stand densities and sites. Results show that the compatible segmented model developed by Fang et al. （2000） best described the experimental data and is therefore recommended for estimating tree diameter at a specific height, height to a specific diameter, merchantable volume, and total volume for oaks. The equation developed in this study is a fundamental tool for use in forest surveys in the study region and is simple enough to ensure its operational implementation. The results of the statistical analysis show that the equation can be recommended for other regions, although some local adaptations may be needed.

The endemic silverside fish C. humboldtianum is of great ichtyologycal, economical and cultural relevance in central Mexico and it has been suggested that it is among a group of other “peces blancos”, the most ancestral species. Here we characterized a set of 26 microsatellite loci from the species in order to further assess population and phylogeographic issues that aid in evaluating their highly impacted populations. From 58 primer pairs tested on specimens from Villa Victoria dam (Rio Balsas Basin), 26 loci positively amplified on the species and cross-primed on specimens of the closely related and threatened Poblana alchichica, C. promelas and C. riojai. Loci resolved medium and high genetic variation (mean NA = 14.3, SD = 9.38;mean HO & HE = 0.47, SD = 0.32 and 0.58, SD = 0.32, respectively) and it is expected that these polymorphic loci are also useful in studing threatened atherinopsid species.

Mitochondrial protection by low doses of insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰin experimental cirrhosis

AIM： To characterize the mitochondrial dysfunction in experimental cirrhosis and to study whether insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰ （IGF-Ⅰ ） therapy （4 wk） is able to induce beneficial effects on damaged mitochondria leading to cellular protection. METHODS： Wistar rats were divided into three groups： Control group, untreated cirrhotic rats and cirrhotic rats treated with IGF-Ⅰ treatment （2 μg/1O0 g bw/d）. Mitochondrial function was analyzed by flow cytometry in isolated hepatic mitochondria, caspase 3 activation was assessed by Western blot and apoptosis by TUNEL in the three expedmental groups. RESULTS： Untreated cirrhotic rats showed a mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by a significant reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential （in status 4 and 3）; an increase of intramitochondrial reactive oxigen species （ROS） generation and a significant reduction of ATPase activity. IGF-Ⅰ therapy normalized mitochondrial function by increasing the membrane potential and ATPase activity and reducing the intramitochondrial free radical production. Activity of the electron transport complexes Ⅰ and Ⅲ was increased in both cirrhotic groups. In addition, untreated cirrhotic rats showed an increase of caspase 3 activation and apoptosis. IGF- Ⅰ therapy reduced the expression of the active peptide of caspase 3 and resulted in reduced apoptosis. CONCLUSION： These results show that IGF- Ⅰ exerts a mitochondrial protection in experimental cirrhosis leading to reduced apoptosis and increased ATP production.

Geospatial Model as Strategy to Prevent Forest Fires: A Case Study

The forests of the State of Durango have been severely affected by fires in recent years. Early detection of fires through watchtowers is essential. In this work a geospatial model was generated to optimize strategic visualization points, using a GIS environment. Analysis of the area of visibility was developed by integrating a digital model of elevation and a plant cover map. The resulting distribution generates more than 50% coverage of the studied area, in points that were not always the highest. It was concluded that this strategy would permit to increase the efficiency, mainly favoring the communities of pine, whose economic importance would justify the required investment.

Indomethacin but not a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor inhibits esophageal adenocarcinogenesis in rats

AIM： To evaluate the effects of indomethacin [dual cyclooxygenase （COX）-I/COX-2 inhibitor] and 3-（3,4-difluorophenyl）-4-（4-（methylsulfonyl） phenyl）- 2-（5H）-furanone （MF-tricyclic）（COX-2 selective inhibi- tor） in a rat experimental model of Barrett＇s esophagus and esophageal ***： A total of 112 surviving post-surgery rats were randomly divided into three groups： the control group （n = 48）, which did not receive any treatment; the indomethacin group （n = 32）, which were given 2 mg/kg per day of the COX-I/COX-2 inhibitor; and the MF-tricyclic group （n = 32）, which received 10 mg/kg per day of the selective COX-2 inhibitor. Randomly se- lected rats were killed either 8 wk or 16 wk after sur- gery. The timing of the deaths was in accordance with a previous study performed in our group. Only rats that were killed at the times designated by the protocol were included in the study. We then assessed the histology and prostaglandin E2 （PGE2） expression levels in the rat esophagi. An additional group of eight animals that did not undergo esophagojejunostomy were included in order to obtain normal esophageal tissue as a control. RESULTS： Compared to a control group with no treat- ment （vehicle-treated rats）, indomethacin treatment was associated with decreases in ulcerated esophageal mucosa （16% vs 35% and 14% vs 17%, 2 mo and 4 mo after surgery, respectively; P = 0.021）, length of intestinal metaplasia in continuity with anastomosis （2 4- 1.17 mm vs 2.29 ＋ 0.75 mm and 1.25 4- 0.42 mm vs 3.5 4- 1.54 mm, 2 mo and 4 mo after surgery, respec- tively; P = 0.007）, presence of intestinal metaplasia beyond anastomosis （20% vs 71.4% and 0% vs 60%, 2 mo and 4 mo after surgery, respectively; P = 0.009）, severity of dysplasia （0% vs 71.4% and 20% vs 85.7% high-grade dysplasia, 2 mo and 4 mo after surgery, re- spectively; P = 0.002）, and adenocarcinoma incidence （0% vs 57.1% and 0% vs 60%, 2 mo and 4 mo after surgery, respectively; P 〈 0.0001）. Laurel forests are quite relevant for biodiversity conservation and are among the island ecosystems most severely damaged by human *** the past,Canary laurel forests have been greatly altered by logging,livestock and *** remains of laurel forests are currently protected in the Canary Islands(Spain).However,we miss basic information needed for their restoration and adaptive management,such as tree longevity,growth potential and responsiveness to natural and anthropogenic *** dendrochronological methods,we studied how forest dynamic is related to land-use change and windstorms in two well-preserved laurel forests on Tenerife *** cores were collected from over 80 trees per stand at three stands per *** used ring-width series to estimate tree ages and calculate annual basal area increments(BAI),cumulative diameter increases,and changes indicative of released and suppressed *** tree species were found in all stands,with Laurus novocanariensis,Ilex canariensis and Morella faya being the most common *** some individuals were over 100 years old,61.8%-88.9% of the trees per stand established between 1940 and 1970,coinciding with a post-war period of land abandonment,rural exodus and the onset of a tourism *** trees have shown growth rates larger than 1 cm diameter per year and most species have had increasing BAI trends over the past *** growth releases occurred after windstorms at both sites,but the effects of windstorms were site-dependent,with the 1958 storm affecting mainly the eastern tip of the island(Anaga massif)and the 1991 storm the western tip(Teno massif).Given the great ability of laurel forest trees to establish after land use cessation and to increase growth after local disturbances such as windstorms,passive restoration may be sufficient to regenerate this habitat in currently degraded areas.

Effectiveness of an intervention for reducing social stigma towards mental illness in adolescents

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention for reducing social stigma towards mental illness in adolescents. The effect of gender and knowledge of someone with mental illness was measured. METHODS: Two hundred and eighty secondary school students were evaluated using the Community Attitudes towards Mental Illness(CAMI) questionnaire. The schools were randomized and some received the intervention and others acted as the control group. The programme consisted of providing information via a documentary film and of contact with healthcare staff in order to reduce the social stigma within the school environment. RESULTS: The intervention was effective in reducing the CAMI authoritarianism and social restrictiveness subscales. The intervention showed significant changes in girls in terms of authoritarianism and social restrictiveness, while boys only showed significant changes in authoritarianism. Following the intervention, a significant reduction was found in authoritarianism and social restrictiveness in those who knew someone with mental illness, and only in authoritarianism in those who did not know anyone with mental illness. CONCLUSION: The intervention was effective to reduce social stigma towards people with mental illness, especially in the area of authoritarianism. Some differences were found depending on gender and whether or not the subjects knew someone with mental illness.
