Tuning MXenes Towards Their Use in Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Finding appropriate photocatalysts for solar-driven water(H_(2)O)splitting to generate hydrogen(H_(2))fuel is a challenging task,particularly when guided by conventional trial-and-error experimental ***,density functional theory(DFT)is used to explore the MXenes photocatalytic properties,an emerging family of two-dimensional(2D)transition metal carbides and nitrides with chemical formula M_(n+1)X_(n)T_(x),known to be semiconductors when having T_(x)*** than 4,000 MXene structures have been screened,considering different compositional(M,X,T_(x),and n)and structural(stacking and termination position)factors,to find suitable MXenes with a bandgap in the visible region and band edges that align with the water-splitting half-reaction *** from bandgap analysis show how,in general,MXenes with n=1 and transition metals from group III present the most cases with bandgap and promising sizes,with C-MXenes being superior to *** band alignment calculations of candidate systems with a bandgap larger than 1.23 ev,the minimum required for a water-splitting process,Sc_(2)CT_(2),Y_(2)CT_(2)(T_(x)=Cl,Br,S,and Se)and Y_(2)CI_(2)are highlighted as adequate photocatalysts.

Prognostic Factors for Mortality in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury at HGZ 46, villahermosa, Tabasco, Period from march 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022

Introduction: A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by a forceful bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, or by an object that pierces the skull and interrupts the normal function of the brain. Severe TBI is estimated at 73 cases per 100,000 people. The mortality of severe TBI can be reduced if a timely diagnosis and treatment of the injuries are made through prognostic factors. Objective: To determine the prognostic factors related to mortality in severe traumatic brain injury at the Hospital General de Zona No. 46. Material and Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study in beneficiaries admitted to the Hospital General de Zona (HGZ) No. 46 of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS by its acronym in Spanish), with a diagnosis of severe TBI;the possible prognostic factors related to mortality of severe TBI were obtained from their records. Measures of central tendency and chi square were used for data analysis. Results: The study sample consisted of 60 subjects diagnosed with severe traumatic brain injury, of which 5 (8%) were women and 55 (92%) were men, and all 60 (100%) patients died. The average age of the sample was 26 with a standard deviation of 9 years. The variables that had a p value less than or equal to 0.05 were: Mydriasis, seizures, Hyperglycemia, Normoglycemia, Hypothermia and Hypotension. This means that these variables were associated with mortality. Conclusion: Statistical significance is demonstrated in prognostic factors of mortality in severe traumatic brain injury with p < 0.05 in the case of mydriasis, seizures, hyperglycemia, normoglycemia, hypothermia and hypotension.

Antibacterial activity of five Peruvian medicinal plants against Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Objective: To evaluate the susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa)in vitro to the ethanolic extracts obtained from five different Peruvian medicinal ***: The plants were chopped and soaked in absolute ethanol(1:2, w/v). The antibacterial activity of compounds against P. aeruginosa was evaluated using the cupplate agar diffusion ***: The extracts from Maytenus macrocarpa("Chuchuhuasi"), Dracontium loretense Krause("Jergon Sacha"), Tabebuia impetiginosa("Tahuari"), Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn(eucalyptus), Uncaria tomentosa("U?a de gato") exhibited favorable antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa. The effect of water deficit was determined on both in vitro and soil seedling as well as in cells in suspension of Agave americana *** order to do the establishment of cells,the formation of callus was induced;for it two auxins were evaluated:2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2,4-D)and 4-mino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid(picloram)at three concentrations(0.25,0.5 and 0.75 mg L−1)in three explants(leaf,root and meristems)cultured in MS semisolid *** callogenesis response was related to the type and section of the explant,as well as the regulator used,and a cell suspension was established using 0.5 mg L−1 naphthaleneacetic acid(NAA)+0.5 mg L−1 Benzylaminopurine(BAP).Seedlings were exposed to polyethyleneglycol(15%and 30%w/v)with a water potential of−0.87 and−2.67 MPa,respectively,under soil *** stress was applied through restricted *** weight,root system growth,and chlorophyll concentration were some of the parameters that were affected by the effect of water deficit on *** *** concentration values were significantly decreased by 15 at 30%PEG(19.6 SPAD units)compared to the control *** in vitro plants,the highest concentration of proline was found in the roots,being the treatment with 30%polyethylene glycol where the highest concentration of this osmoregulator was obtained(62.5 mg g−1 DW).Under restricted irrigation conditions,an increase in proline concentration was observed both in the aerial part(2.2μg 100 g−1 DW)and in the root system(1.8μg 100 g−1 DW).However,the concentrations found were approximately ten times greater,less than those found under in vitro ***,the accumulation of proline can be considered an indicator of stress in Agave Americana *** in vitro.

El Soplao outcrop, an Early Cretaceous amber deposit recently discovered in northern Spain （Cantabria）, has been shown to be the largest site of amber with arthropod inclusions that has been found in Spain so far. Relevant data provided herein for biogeochemistry of the amber, palynology, taphonomy and arthropod bioinclusions complement those previously published. This set of data suggests at least two botanical sources for the amber of El Soplao deposit. The first （type A amber） strongly supports a source related to Cheirolepidiaceae, and the second （type B amber） shows non-specific conifer biomarkers. Comparison of molecular composition of type A amber with Frenelopsis leaves （Cheirolepidiaceae） strongly suggests a biochemical affinity and a common botanical origin. A preliminary palynological study indicates a regional high taxonomical diversity, mainly of pteridophyte spores and gymnosperm pollen grains. According to the preliminary palynological data, the region was inhabited by conifer forests adapted to a dry season under a subtropical climate. The abundant charcoalified wood associated with the amber in the same beds is evidence of paleofires that most likely promoted both the resin production and an intensive erosion of the litter, and subsequent great accumulation of amber plus plant cuticles. In addition, for the first time in the fossil record, charcoalified plant fibers as bioinclnsions in amber are reported. Other relevant taphonomic data are the exceptional presence of serpulids and bryozoans on the surfaces of some amber pieces indicating both a long exposure on marine or brackish-water and a mixed assemblage of amber. Lastly, new findings of insect bioiuclusions, some of them uncommon in the fossil record or showing remarkable adaptations, are reported. In conclusion, a documented scenario for the origin of the El Soplao amber outcrop is provided.

Effect of split applications of urea on protein size distribution, physical dough properties, and baking performance of five experimental bread wheat lines

Five experimental bread wheat lines (BWL) were grown at the Yaqui valley Experimental Station in Sonora, México during two consecutive growing cycles. The effect of five nitrogen fertilization (NF) treatments on protein size distribution (PSD), physical dough properties (PDP), and baking performance of the BWL was evaluated. Polymeric and monomeric proteins were evalu-ated by SE-HPLC. PDP were carried out by the National Mixograph and the TA-XT2 Texture Analyzer. Baking performance was evaluated using the straight dough method. Protein content (PC), main protein fractions (glutenins, gliadins, albumins-globulins), and mixograph development time (MDT) were significantly influenced by NF treatment and BWL but not by their interaction. On the other hand, PDP measured by the Kieffer rig, and baking performance were significantly influenced by the main factors (NF and BWL) and their interaction. The amount and timing of fertilizer applied to the BWL modified the PC, PSD, PDP, and bread loaf volume. PDP exhibited a larger variation in comparison to the PSD of glutenins. The split application of 150 kg of urea/ha (50-50-50) to all BWL showed a better loaf volume response than the same amount of urea applied at sowing (150-0-0). The application of 300 kg of urea/ha to all BWL, either at sowing or at three split applications of 100 kg of urea/ha each, resulted in higher flour unextractable polymeric protein (FUPP). On the other hand, the split application of 100-100-100 kg of urea/ha to three of the BWL represented the higher total unextractable polymeric protein (TUPP). Differences on PC and PSD were reflected on differences on PDP and bread loaf volume observed among the BWL.

Importance of sperm morphology during sperm transport and fertilization in mammals

After natural or artificial insemination, the spermatozoon starts a journey from the site of deposition to the place of fertilization. However, only a small subset of the spermatozoa deposited achieves their goal： to reach and fertilize the egg. Factors involved in controlling sperm transport and fertilization include the female reproductive tract environment, cell-cell interactions, gene expression, and phenotypic sperm traits. Some of the significant determinants of fertilization are known （i.e., motility or DNA status）, but many sperm traits are still indecipherable. One example is the influence of sperm dimensions and shape upon transport within the female genital tract towards the oocyte. Biophysical associations between sperm size and motility may influence the progression of spermatozoa through the female reproductive tract, but uncertainties remain concerning how sperm morphology influences the fertilization process, and whether only the sperm dimensions per se are involved. Moreover, such explanations do not allow the possibility that the female tract is capable of distinguishing fertile spermatozoa on the basis of their morphology, as seems to be the case with biochemical, molecular, and genetic properties. This review focuses on the influence of sperm size and shape in evolution and their putative role in sperm transport and selection within the uterus and the ability to fertilize the oocyte.
