Confounding response of macrofauna from a confluence of impacts: brine and sewage pollution

Throughout the shores of the world, a confluence of different sources of pollution is common, e.g., through outlets releasing brine, industrial, and domestic sewage. In this study, we assessed whether a combined disposal of domestic sewage and brine altered the patterns of abundance and assemblage structure of sub- tidal macrofauna inhabiting sandy seabeds on the south coast of Gran Canaria （Canary Islands, NE Atlantic Ocean）. Samples were collected in two surveys （May 2008 and January 2009） at three distances （0, 15, and 30 m） away from the discharge point. Macrofaunal abundances showed different patterns with varying proximity from the disposal point in the two surveys. In May 2008, lower abundances were observed at 0 m （53.89±46.82 ind.） than at 15 m （120±91.7 ind.） and 30 m （283.89±189.33 ind.） away from the dis- posal point. In January 2009, however, higher abundances were observed at 0 m （131.33±58.69 ind.） than at 30 m （100±24.44 ind.） and 15 m （84.78±58.39 ind.） away from the disposal point. Significant differ- ences in macrofaunal assemblage structure were found with varying proximity from the discharge point in both surveys. The effect of proximity from the disposal point was confounded by changes in sedimen- tary composition between surveys, which contributed to explain differences in macrofaunal abundances and assemblage structure with varying proximity from the discharge point. As a result, confounding driver- s of macrofaunal assemblage structure, here, changes in sediment composition, accounted for changes in macrofaunal abundances and assemblage structure with varying proximity from a combined disposal point of brine and sewage.

AIM: To evaluate the correlation between the immunoexpression of angiogenic markers [CD31, CD105 and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)], proliferative index(Ki67), and prognosis of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GIST).METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 54 GIST cases. Medical records were searched to obtain the GIST patients' demographic and clinical data, and paraffin-embedded blocks of tumor samples were retrieved from the hospital archives to conduct a new immunohistochemical evaluation. The tumor samples of GIST patients were subject to immunohistochemical evaluation for endoglin(CD105), CD31, VEGF, and Ki67 expression. The CD105 and CD31 intratumoral microvascular density(IMVD) was measured using automated analysis. We determined the correlation between the immunoexpression of CD105, CD31, VEGF,Ki67 and prognosis. In addition, we conducted a cutoff analysis using the receiver-operating characteristic curve. VEGF positivity was classified as either null/weak or strong. Ki67 was evaluated using a cutoff of 5%positive cells. The prognosis was classified as good(patient alive without recurrence) or poor(patient with recurrence/death).RESULTS: The distribution of tumor sites among the54 analyzed samples was as follows: 27(50%) in the stomach, 20(37.1%) in the small intestine, 6(11.1%)in the colon, and 1(1.8%) in the esophagus. The size of the tumors ranged from 2 to 33 cm(median: 8cm); in 12 cases(22.2%), the tumor was below 5 cm at the largest diameter, but in 42 cases(77.7%), the tumor was larger than 5 cm. The means of CD105 and CD31 were significantly higher in the group with poor prognosis(P 1.2%) and CD31(> 2.5%) in the receiver-operating characteristic curve were related to a poorer *** with a better prognosis showed significantly null/weak staining for VEGF(P multivariate analysis, C

This paper reviews distributed discrimination of strain and temperature by use of an optical fiber based on fiber optic nerve systems. The preliminary method based on multiple resonance peaks of the Brillouin gain spectrum in a specially-designed fiber is firstly introduced. The complete discrimination of strain and temperature based on the Brillouin dynamic grating in a polarization maintaining fiber is extensively presented. The basic principle and two experimental schemes of distributed discrimination based on fiber optic nerve systems are demonstrated. The performance of the high discriminative accuracy （0.1 ~C-0.3 ~C and 5 kte-12~te） and high spatial resolution （-10 cm） with the effective measurement points of about 50 for a standard system configuration or about 1000 for a modified one will be highly expected in real industry applications.

Seizures of agrochemical formulations have increased in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul is among the Brazilian states with the highest number of seizures of these products obtained illicitly. The use of illicit formulations can cause significant harm to agricultural production, the environment, and non-target species. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and oxidative stress of a seized formulation containing the herbicide imazethapyr (IMZT). Characterization of the herbicide included gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and thermal analyses (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)). Hemolytic and cytotoxicity assays in ZF-L hepatic cells showed IC50 values of 12.75 µg/mL, 3.01 µg/mL, 2.67 µg/mL, and 1.61 µg/mL for erythrocytes, [3(4,5-dimethyl)-2 bromide-5 diphenyl tetrazolium] (MTT), neutral red (NR), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays, respectively. The median IC50 of 2.84 µg/mL was used in oxidative stress assays, revealing increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, reduced total sulfhydryl content, and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity. This study is the first to report in vitro oxidative stress induced by IMZT in the ZF-L cell line, emphasizing the importance of in vitro assays for assessing the toxic effects of seized agrochemicals on human health and the environment.

The homojunction based on Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene-doped In_(2)O_(3) and indium oxide as the channel layer is real-ized in high-performance metal oxide thin film transistors(TFTs).Doping of MXene into In_(2)O_(3) results in n-type semiconductor behavior,realizing tunable work function of In_(2)O_(3) from 5.11 to 4.79 eV as MXene content increases from 0 to 2 wt.%.MXene-doped In_(2)O_(3)-based homojunction TFT presents optimal per-formance with electron mobilities of greater than 27.10 cm^(2)/(V s)at 240°C,far exceeding the maximum mobility of 3.91 cm^(2)/(V s)for single-layer In_(2)O_(3)*** improved performance originates from boosting of a two-dimensional electron gas(2DEG)formed at carefully engineered In_(2)O_(3)/MXene-doped In_(2)O_(3)ox-ide homojunction ***,the transformation in conduction mechanism leads to better stability of MXene-doped In_(2)O_(3) homojunction devices compared to undoped bilayer In_(2)O_(3).Low-frequency noise further illustrates that doping MXene into In_(2)O_(3) helps to reduce the device trap density,demonstrating excellent electrical performance.A resistor-loaded unipolar inverter based on In_(2)O_(3)/0.5%MXene-In_(2)O_(3)TFT has demonstrated full swing characteristics and a high gain of *** effective doping of MXene into constructed homojunction TFTs not only contributes to improved stability,but also provides an ef-fective strategy for designing novel homojunction TFTs for low-cost oxide-based electronics.
