A novel and substantive approach to teaching the diagnostic elements of pulmonary pathology. Drawing on 263 challenging, yet exemplary, referral cases taken from files collected over 20 years by internationally renowned lung pathologist, Dr. Eugene Mark, the authors introduce his state-of-the-art approach to the interpretation of pulmonary pathology. They illustrate the principles of his diagnostic approach with high-resolution color images found on the CD accompanying the book. This Lung Pathology Atlas on CD-ROM contains the histological record of each case, usually as five-color images that are representative of the histology seen on the slides that were sent to Dr. Mark in consultation, with the pathology being described in his letters to the referring pathologists. This text includes the primary and/or differential diagnosis and the pertinent histological features of each case, as well as clinical history, when available. Key words or phrases in the text are highlighted and digitally hyperlinked to associated images or regions of interest within those images to assist the readers in their correlation. The CD allows readers to differentiate subtle differences in histology when separating one disease entity from another and to broaden their understanding of the natural history of the disease through examples of medical lung disease in different phases of progression

Neurological heterotopic ossification(NHO)is a debilitating condition where bone forms in soft tissue,such as muscle surrounding the hip and knee,following an inj.ry to the brain or spinal *** abnormal formation of bone can result in nerve impingement,pain,contractures and impaired *** are often diagnosed with NHO after the bone tissue has completely mineralised,leaving invasive surgical resection the only remaining treatment *** resection of NHO creates potential for added complications,particularly in patients with concomitant inj.ry to the central nervous system(CNS).Although recent work has begun to shed light on the physiological mechanisms involved in NHO,there remains a significant knowledge gap related to the prognostic biomarkers and prophylactic treatments which are necessary to prevent NHO and optimise patient *** article reviews the current understanding pertaining to NHO epidemiology,pathobiology,biomarkers and treatment *** particular,we focus on how concomitant CNS inj.ry may drive ectopic bone formation and discuss considerations for treating polytrauma patients with *** conclude that understanding of the pathogenesis of NHO is rapidly advancing,and as such,there is the strong potential for future research to unearth methods capable of identifying patients likely to develop NHO,and targeted treatments to prevent its manifestation.

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is an important redox-active cofactor for many bacterial dehy-drogenases. It's biosynthetic pathway involves six or seven genes, one of which is pqqB. Former studies indicated that the protein encoded by pqqB, namely PqqB, functions as a PQQ transporter. Here we report the crystal structure of PqqB from Pseudomonas putida at 2.2 ? resolution together with functional studies to verify this theory.

Diversification in sexual signals is often taken as evidenee for the importance of sexual selection in speciatio ***,in order for sexual selection to gen erate reproductive isolati on between populations,both signals and mate preferences must diverge ***,assortative mating may result from multiple behavioral mecha nisms,in eluding female mate pref ere nces,male mate preferences,and male-male competition;yet their relative contributions are rarely ***,we explored the role of mate pref ere nces and male competitive ability as pote ntial barriers to gene flow between 2 diverge nt lineages of the taw ny dragon lizard,Ctenophorus decresii,which differ in male throat *** found stronger behavioral barriers to pairings between southern lineage males and northern lineage females than between northern males and southern females,indicating incomplete and asymmetric behavioral isolating *** results were driven by both male and female mate preferences rather than lineage differences in male competitive *** trasexual selecti on is therefore un likely to drive the outcome of sec on dary contact in ***,despite its widely ack no wledged importa nee in *** results are consiste nt with the emergi ng view that although both male and female mate pref ere nces can diverge alongside sexual signals,speciation is rarely driven by divergent sexual selection alone.

BACKGROUND:Prior experimentation has shown that loss of the tyrosine kinase(TK) signaling domain of the Ron receptor leads to marked hepatocyte protection in a model of lipopolysaccharideinduced acute liver failure(ALF) in D-galactosamine(GalN)sensitized *** aim of this study was to identify the role of Ron in the regulation of hepatic gene ***:Microarray analyses were performed on liver RNA isolated sequentially from wild-type(WT) and TK-/mice during the progression of *** array data were validated using Western and immunohistochemistry analyses as well as with ex vivo culture ***:At baseline,101 genes were differentially expressed between WT and TK-/-livers,which regulate processes involved in hypoxia,proliferation,apoptosis and *** hour after ALF induction,WT livers exhibited increased cytokine expression compared to TK-/-livers,and after 4 hours,an induction of suppressor of cytokine signaling(SOCS) genes as well as j.K-STAT pathway activation were prominent in TK-/livers compared to ***:Our studies suggest a novel hepato-protective mechanism in Ron TK-/-mice wherein increased and sustained SOCS production and j.K-STAT activation in the hepatocyte may inhibit the destructive proinflammatory milieu and promote survival factors which blunt hepatic death and the ensuing development of ALF.

The discrete element model （DEM） is a very promising modelling strategy for two-phase granular systems. However, owing to a lack of experimental measurements, validation of numerical simulations of two-phase granular systems is still an important issue. In this study, a small two-dimensional gas- fluidized bed was simulated using a discrete element model. The dimensions of the simulated bed were 44mm × 10mm × 120 mm and the fluidized particles had a diameter dp = 1.2 mm and density ρp = 1000 kg/m^3. The comparison between DEM simulations and experiments are performed on the basis of time-averaged voidage maps. The drag-law of Beetstra et al. [Beetstra, R., van der Hoef, M.A., ＆ Kuipers,j. A. M. （2007b）. Drag force of intermediate Reynolds number flow past mono- and bidispersed arrays of spheres. AIChE j.urnal, 53,489-501 ] seems to give the best results. The simulations are fairly insensitive to the coefficient of restitution and the coefficient of friction as long as some route of energy dissipation during particle-particle and particle-wall contact is provided. Changing the boundary condition of the gas phase at the side-walls from zero-slip to full-slip does not affect the simulation results. Care is to be taken that the cell sizes are chosen so that a reasonable number of particles can be found in a fluid cell.

Rangelands worldwide have been subj.ct to broadscale modiﬁcation,such as widespread predator control,intro-duction of permanent livestock water and altered vegetation to improve *** Australia,these landscape changes have resulted in kangaroos(*** macropods)populations increasing over the past 200 ***-garoos are a key contributor to total grazing pressure and in conj.nction with livestock and feral herbivores have been linked to land *** used 22 years of aerial survey data to investigate whether the density of 3 macropod species in the southern rangelands of Western Australia was associated with:(i)land use,including type of livestock,total livestock,density of feral goats,type of land tenure,and kangaroo commercial harvest effort;(ii)predator management,including permitted dingo control effort,estimated dingo abundance,and presence of the State Barrier Fence(a dingo exclusion fence);and(iii)environmental variables:ruggedness,rainfall,fractional cover,and total standing dry *** kangaroos(Osphranter rufus)were most abundant inﬂat,open vegetation,on pastoral land,where area permitted for dingo control was high,and numbers were positively associated with antecedent rainfall with a 12-month *** grey kangaroos(Macropus fuliginosus)were most abundant onﬂat,agricultural land,but less abundant in areas with high permitted dingo ***(Osphranter robustus)were most abundant in rugged pastoral land with open vegetation,where permitted dingo control was *** environmental variables are key drivers of landscape productivity and kangaroo populations,anthropogenic factors such as land use and permitted dingo control are strongly associated with kangaroo abundance.

The characterization of multiple iron-rich phases in high-pressure die-cast AlSi10MnMg alloy was *** was focused on the formation and fracture behavior of the primary iron-rich phase((P-IMC)_(I))formed in the shot sleeve and plate-shaped eutectic iron-rich phase in high-pressure die cast(HPDC)AlSi10MnMg *** show that multiple types of iron-rich phases with various morphologies,in-cluding primary iron-rich phases(polyhedral(P-IMC)_(I) and(P-IMC)_(II))and eutectic iron-rich phases(plate-shaped,net shape,and fish-bone shape),were found in HPDC ***(P-IMC)_(I) formed in the shot sleeve were distributed in the interface between primaryα-Al and binary Al-Si *** size(P-IMC)_(II) and various eutectic iron-rich phases formed in the die cavity and they were distributed in Al-Si binary *** primary iron-rich phases belonged to a simple cubic crystal structure with a lattice constant a=1.265 nm and they exhibited a lateral growth characteristic with a termination of{110}surface.βphase was surrounded byδphase and they coexisted in a plate-shaped iron-rich ***-density stacking fault inβphase andδ/βinterface provided an excellent nucleation site forδ*** mechanical behavior,the stress concentration caused by eutectic iron-rich phases was far less than(P-IMC)_(I) and it would not cause crack initiation along the eutectic cluster *** addition,(P-IMC)_(I) showed the worst deformation coordination with primaryα-Al while the plate-shaped eutectic iron-rich phase exhibited similar deformation characteristics with silicon particles.
