Clinical studies in COVID-related olfactory disorders:Review of an institutional experience

Objective:To share a single institutional experience with clinical research on COVID-related olfactory dysfunction(OD).Data Source/method:Narrative review of published original data and ongoing clinical trials on COVID-related OD at Washington University from 2020 to 2023.Results:There were three new diagnostic-/patient-reported outcome measures developed and tested.We report five clinical trials of interventions for COVID-related olfactory disorders:combined Visual-Olfactory Training(VOLT)with patient-preferred scents versus standard olfactory training(VOLT trial),oral gabapentin versus placebo(Gabapentin for the Relief of Acquired Chemosensory Experience trial),nasal theophylline irrigations versus placebo(Smell Changes and Efficacy of Nasal Theophylline trial),stellate ganglion block(single-arm),and mindfulness-based stress reduction(mBSR)versus lifestyle intervention(mBSR trial).Conclusions:Initial intervention trials for COVID-related OD have shown potential for improving subjective and objective olfactory outcomes.However,there remains no gold standard treatment that definitively outperforms placebo in controlled trials.Therefore,continued investigation of novel therapeutic strategies for COVID-related OD is necessary to maximize olfactory outcomes for affected patients.

The hydrothermal synthesis of In_(2)O_(3)and CeO_(2)–In_(2)O_(3)is investigated as well as the properties of sensor layers based on these compounds.During the synthesis of In_(2)O_(3),intermediate products In(OH)_(3)and InOOH are formed,which are the precursors of stable cubic(c-In_(2)O_(3))and metastable rhombohedral(rh-In_(2)O_(3))phases,respectively.A transition from c-In_(2)O_(3)to rh-In_(2)O_(3)is observed with the addition of CeO_(2).The introduction of cerium into rh-In_(2)O_(3)results in a decrease in the sensor response to hydrogen,while it increases in composites based on c-In_(2)O_(3).The data on the sensor activity of the composites correlate with XPS results in which CeO_(2)causes a decrease in the concentrations of chemisorbed oxygen and oxygen vacancies in rh-In_(2)O_(3).The reverse situation is observed in composites based on c-In_(2)O_(3).Compared to In_(2)O_(3)and CeO_(2)–In_(2)O_(3)obtained by other methods,the synthesized composites demonstrate maximum response to H_(2)at low temperatures by 70–100℃,and have short response time(0.2–0.5 s),short recovery time(6–7 s),and long-term stability.A model is proposed for the dependence of sensitivity on the direction of electron transfer between In_(2)O_(3)and CeO_(2).

This study reflects on the impact that the neighborhoods’in-between spaces have on:spatial perception,social interaction,and security.These sites,characterized by their abandonment and deterioration,can also be seen as crucial spaces of opportunity for cities,in the architectural,urban and landscape research.This paper aims to analyze the sociospatial relationships in the neighborhoods’in-between spaces and examine the impact of inbetween space configuration on urban habitability.The investigation draws on a survey of perception to residents about the requirements for a suitable social interaction in these spaces.This study was developed in a neighborhood in the city periphery,characterized by their social dynamics and location in a nature conservation area.The findings indicate that the appropriation process,activities,and collective practices are dependent on the spatial legibility,in this case when this increases,gives rise to improve the habitability and the rehabilitation of the in-between space.furthermore,the lack of design on in-between spaces substantially affects the use of these spaces and the social interaction among residents.

Glyphosate-based herbicides are widely used around the world, making it likely that most humans have significant exposure. Because of habitual exposure, there are concerns about toxicity including neurotoxicity that could result in neurological, psychiatric, or cognitive impairment. We recently found that a single injection of glyphosate inhibits long-term potentiation, a cellular model of learning and memory, in rat hippocampal slices dissected 1 day after injection, indicating that glyphosate-based herbicides can alter cognitive function. Glyphosate-based herbicides could adversely affect cognitive function either indirectly and/or directly. Indirectly, glyphosate could affect gut microbiota, and if dysbiosis results in endotoxemia(leaky gut), infiltrated bacterial by-products such as lipopolysaccharides could activate pro-inflammatory cascades. Glyphosate can also directly trigger pro-inflammatory cascades. Indeed, we observed that acute glyphosate exposure inhibits long-term potentiation in rat hippocampal slices. Interestingly, direct inhibition of long-term potentiation by glyphosate appears to be similar to that of lipopolysaccharides. There are several possible measures to control dysbiosis and neuroinflammation caused by glyphosate. Dietary intake of polyphenols, such as quercetin, which overcome the inhibitory effect of glyphosate on long-term potentiation, could be one effective strategy. The aim of this narrative review is to discuss possible mechanisms underlying neurotoxicity following glyphosate exposure as a means to identify potential treatments.

BACKGROUND Psychological assessment after intensive care unit(ICU)discharge is increasingly used to assess patients'cognitive and psychological well-being.However,few studies have examined those who recovered from coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).There is a paucity of data from the middle East assessing the post-ICU discharge mental health status of patients who had COVID-19.AIm To evaluate anxiety and depression among patients who had severe COVID-19.mETHODS This is a prospective single-center follow-up questionnaire-based study of adults who were admitted to the ICU or under ICU consultation for>24 h for COVID-19.Eligible patients were contacted via telephone.The patient’s anxiety and depression six months after ICU discharge were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS).The primary outcome was the mean HADS score.The secondary outcomes were risk factors of anxiety and/or depression.RESULTS Patients who were admitted to the ICU because of COVID-19 were screened(n=518).Of these,48 completed the questionnaires.The mean age was 56.3±17.2 years.Thirty patients(62.5%)were male.The main comorbidities were endocrine(n=24,50%)and cardiovascular(n=21,43.8%)diseases.The mean overall HADS score for anxiety and depression at 6 months post-ICU discharge was 11.4(SD±8.5).A HADS score of>7 for anxiety and depression was detected in 15 patients(30%)and 18 patients(36%),respectively.Results from the multivariable ordered logistic regression demonstrated that vasopressor use was associated with the development of anxiety and depression[odds ratio(OR)39.06,95% confidence interval:1.309-1165.8;Pmonths after ICU discharge,30% of patients who had COVID-19 demonstrated a HADS score that confirmed anxiety and depression.To compare the psychological status of patients following an ICU admission(with vs without COVID-19),further studies are warranted.

A C-shaped hinge for displacement magnification in mEmS rotational structures

The design,analysis,fabrication,and characterization of two distinct mEmS rotational structures are provided;these structures include a classical symmetrical lancet structure and a novel symmetrical C-shaped structure provided with a tilted arm,and both are actuated by thermal actuators.Our proposed C-shaped structure implemented a curved beam mechanism to enhance the movement delivered by the thermal actuators.The geometrical parameters of our proposed device were optimized using the design of experiment(DOE)method.furthermore,the analytical modeling based on Castigliano’s second theorem and the simulations based on the finite element method(fEm)were used to predict the behavior of the symmetrical C-shaped structure;the results were in good agreement with each other.The mEmS-based rotational structures were fabricated on silicon-on-insulator(SOI)wafers using bulk micromachining technology and deep reactive ion etching(DRIE)processes.The fabricated devices underwent experimental characterization;our results showed that our proposed mEmS rotational structure exhibited a 28%improvement in the delivered displacement compared to the symmetrical lancet structure.furthermore,the experimental results showed good agreement with those obtained from numerical analysis.Our proposed structures have potential applications in a variety of mEmS devices,including accelerometers,gyroscopes,and resonators,due to their ability to maximize displacement and thus enhance sensitivity.

The Van Hoof effect is a phase shift existing between the radial velocity curves of hydrogen and metallic lines within the atmosphere of pulsating stars. In this article, we present a study of this phenomenon through the spectra of the brightest pulsating star RR Lyr of RR Lyrae stars recorded for 22 yr. We based ourselves, on the one hand,on 1268 spectra(41 nights of observation) recorded between the years 1994 and 1997 at the Observatory of Haute Provence(OHP, france) previously observed by Chadid and Gillet, and on the other hand on 1569 spectra(46nights of observation) recorded at our Oukaimeden Observatory(morocco) between 2015 and 2016. Through this study, we have detected information on atmospheric dynamics that had not previously been detected. Indeed, the Van Hoof effect which results in a clear correlation between the radial velocities of hydrogen and those of the metallic lines has been observed and analyzed at different Blazhko phases. A correlation between the radial velocities of different metallic lines located in the lower atmosphere has been observed as well. for the first time,we were able to show that the amplitude of the radial velocity curves deduced from the lines of hydrogen and that of fe Ⅱ(λ4923.921 ?) increases toward the minimum of the Blazhko cycle and decreases toward the maximum of the same Blazhko cycle. furthermore, we found that the Van Hoof effect is also modulated by the Blazhko effect.Thus, toward the minimum of the Blazhko cycle the Van Hoof effect is more visible and at the maximum of the Blazhko cycle, this effect is minimal. We also observed the temporal evolution of the amplitudes of the radial velocities of the lower and upper atmosphere. When observed over a long time, we can interpret it as a function of the Blazhko phases.

Quantum physics rules the dynamics of small objects as they interact over microscopic length scales.Nevertheless,quantum correlations involving macroscopic distances can be observed between entangled photons as well as in atomic gases and matter waves at low temperatures.The long-range nature of the electromagnetic coupling between charged particles and extended objects could also trigger quantum phenomena over large distances.Here,we reveal a manifestation of quantum mechanics that involves macroscopic distances and results in a nearly complete depletion of coherence associated with which-way free-electron interference produced by electron-radiation coupling in the presence of distant extended objects.This is a ubiquitous effect that we illustrate through a rigorous theoretical analysis of a two-path electron beam interacting with a semi-infinite metallic plate and find the inter-path coherence to vanish proportionally to the path separation at zero temperature and exponentially at finite temperature.The investigated regime of large distances originates in the coupling of the electron to radiative modes assisted by diffraction at material structures but without any involvement of material excitations.Besides the fundamental interest of this macroscopic quantum phenomenon,our results suggest an approach to measuring the vacuum temperature and nondestructively sensing the presence of distant objects.

In this paper,layered periodic foundations(LPfs)are numerically examined for their responses to longitudinal and transverse modes in the time and frequency domains.Three different unit-cells,i.e.,2-layer,4-layer,and 6-layer unit-cells,comprising concrete/rubber,concrete/rubber/steel/rubber,and concrete/rubber/steel/rubber/lead/rubber materials,respectively,are taken into account.Also,the viscoelasticity behavior of the rubber is modeled with two factors,i.e.,a frequency-independent(fI)loss factor and a linear frequency-dependent(fD)loss factor.following the extraction of the complex dispersion curves and the identification of the band gaps(BGs),the simulations of wave transmission in the time and frequency domains are performed using the COmSOL software.Subsequent parametric studies evaluate the effects of the rubber viscoelasticity models on the dispersion curves and the wave transmission for the longitudinal and transverse modes.The results show that considering the rubber viscoelasticity enhances the wave attenuation performance.moreover,the transverse-mode damping is more sensitive to the viscoelasticity model than its longitudinal counterpart.The 6-layer unit-cell LPf exhibits the lowest BG,ranging from 4.8 Hz to 6.5 Hz.
