Before being dispersed in the environm.nt, m.ture seeds need to be dehydrated. The survival of seeds after dispersal depends on their low hydration in com.ination with high desiccation tolerance. These characteristics are estab- lished during seed m.turation. Som. key seed m.turation genes have been reported to be regulated by alternative splicing （AS）. However, so far AS was described only for single genes and a com.rehensive analysis of AS during seed m.turation has been lacking. We investigated gene expression and AS during Arabidopsis thaliana seed developm.nt at a global level, before and after desiccation. Bioinform.tics tools were developed to identify differentially spliced regions within genes. Our data suggest the im.ortance and shows the peculiar features of AS during seed desiccation. We identified AS in 347o of genes that are expressed at both tim.points before and after desiccation. m.st of these AS transcript variants had not been found before in other tissues. Am.ng the AS genes som. seed m.ster regulators could be found. Interestingly, 6% of all expressed transcripts were not transcriptionally regulated during desiccation, but only m.dified by AS. We propose that AS should be m.re routinely taken into account in the analysis of transcriptom.c data to prevent overlooking potentially im.ortant regulators.

Friction and wear studies enable the investigation of m.terial interaction between two sliding surfaces in contact. In the present investigation, the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance of AISI 316 L parts were studied under self-m.ting, dry sliding conditions using a pin-on-disc type configuration. The experim.nts were conducted at vacuum.based high tem.erature pin-on-disc tribom.ter. The 4 m. diam.ter pin and 180 m. diam.ter disc were subjected to varying sliding velocities(0.5, 0.75 and 1.5 m.s) and were operated in 200, 400, 500 and 580 ℃ tem.erature at 600 Torr vacuum. The variation of specific wear rates with sliding velocities and different environm.ntal conditions was studied. The m.rphology of sliding/rubbed surfaces was observed using Scanning Electron m.croscope. In sum.ary, it was found that a severe to m.ld wear transition occurred in sliding under operating conditions. Increased wear rates have been observed for 500 and 580 ℃ with increasing sliding velocity. Adhesive wear has been found to be predom.nant at 500 and 580 ℃ where as de-lam.nation has been observed at am.ient tem.erature,200 and 400 ℃ in vacuum. The present paper also carried out the num.rical analysis of the vibration behavior of AISI 316 L under therm.l environm.nt. Results revealed that at high tem.erature vibrational am.litude and natural frequency is significantly reduced. This can be attributed to the reduction in stiffness of the m.terial at elevated tem.eratures. This high am.litude vibration during service can lead to high wear rate.

Aim. To evaluate the effect of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and vitam.n C on ventral prostatic antioxidant system.in adult m.le rats. m.thods: A group of 20 adult m.le rats were adm.nistered ip Aroclor 1254 in corn oil at a dose of 2 m.·kg-1·day-1 for 30 days. Ten control rats were adm.nistered only the vehicle. After 30 days the treated rats were divided at random.into 2 sub-groups of 10 anim.ls each. One sub-group received vitam.n C at a dose of 500 m.·kg-1·day-1 for 10 days. The other group was m.intained as Aroclor 1254 control. Twenty-four hours after the last treatm.nt the rats were killed by decapitation. Ventral prostatic hom.genate was prepared and used for the estim.tion of enzym.tic antioxidants, including superoxide dism.tase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lipid peroxidation (LPO) and prostatic acid phosphatase. The serum.levels of total T3, total T4, TSH, testosterone and estradiol were also assayed. Results: The body weight and ventral prostatic weight were reduced in PCB treated rats. The activities of SOD, CAT, GST and acid phosphatase were decreased while the levels of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation were increased in the ventral prostate of PCB treated rats. Adm.nistration of vitam.n C restored these param.ters. Serum.levels of thyroid horm.nes, estradiol and testosterone were decreased in PCB treated anim.ls. Adm.nistration of vitam.n C restored the thyroid horm.ne levels. Conclusion: PCB induces oxidative stress and decreases the antioxidant enzym.s in the ventral prostate of adult m.le rats; the effects could be reversed by the adm.nistration of vitam.n C.

The form.lation of nanocrystallinc NiTi shape m.m.ry alloys has potential effects in m.chanical stim.lation and m.dical im. plantology. The present work elucidates the effect of m.lling tim. on the product＇s structural characteristics, chem.cal com.osition, and m.- crohardness for NiTi synthesized by m.chanical alloying for different m.lling durations. Increasing the m.lling duration led to the form.tion of a nanocrystalline NiTi interm.tallic at a higher level. The form.tion of nanocrystalline m.terials was directed through cold fusion, fractur- ing, and the developm.nt of a steady state, which were influenced by the accum.lation of strain energy. In the m.rphological study, uninter- rupted cold diffusion and fracturing were visualized using transm.ssion electron m.croscopy. Particle size analysis revealed that the m.an particle size was reduced to -93 μm.after 20 h of m.lling. The m.chanical strength was enhanced by the form.tion of a nanocrystalline in- term.tallic phase at longer m.lling tim., which was confirm.d by the results of Vickers hardness analyses.

The paper evaluates sensitivity of various spaceborne digital elevation m.dels （DEm.）, viz., Advanced Spaceborne Therm.l Em.ssion and Reflection Radiom.ter （ASTER）, Shuttle Radar Topography m.pping m.ssion （SRTm. and Global m.lti-resolution Terrain Elevation Data 2010 （Gm.ED）, in com.arison with the DEm.（TOPO） derived from.contour data of 20 m.interval of Survey of India topographic sheets of 1 ： 50,000 scale. Several topographic attributes, such as elevation （above m.an sea level）, relative relief, slope, aspect, curvature, slope-length and -steepness （LS） factor, terrain ruggedness index （TRI）, topo- graphic wetness index （TWI）, hypsom.tric integral （lhyp） and drainage network attributes （stream.num.er and stream.length） of two tropical m.untain river basins, viz. m.thirapuzha River Basin and Pam.ar River Basin are com.ared to evaluate the variations. Though the basins are com.arable in extent, they differ in respect of terrain characteristics and clim.te. The result.,; suggest that ASTER and SRTm.provide equally reliable representation of topography portrayed by TOP（） and the topographic attributes extracted from.the spaceborne DEm. are in agreem.nt with those derived from.TOPO. Despite the coarser resolution, SRTm.shows relatively higher vertical accuracy （Rm.E -- 23 and 20 m.respectively in m.B and PRB） com.ared to ASTER （Rm.E - 33 and 24 m. and Gm.ED （Rm.E - 59 and 48 m.. Vertical accuracy of all the spaceborne DEm. is influenced by relief of the terrain as well as type of vegetation. Further, Gm.ED shows significant deviation for m.st of the attributes, indicating its inability for m.untain-river-basin-scale studies.

Canopy gaps play a significant role in m.intaining structure and com.osition of tropical forests. This study was carried out in tropical evergreen forests of central Western Ghats in India to understand the influence of canopy gap size and the relationship of gap regim. attributes to diversity m.asures and regeneration. The average gap size in the study area was found to be 396 m. and around half of gaps were 4–8 years old. Gaps created by natural single tree fall were sm.ller in size but significantly higher in num.er. Diversity and regeneration of woody species were com.ared with canopy gaps and intact vegetation. Species richness and diversity was higher in gaps than in intact vegetation. m.caranga peltata, a shade intolerant species dom.nated gaps while intact vegetation was dom.nated by shade tolerant Kingiodendron *** size significantly influenced species diversity and regeneration. Gap area and age were significantly and negatively correlated with diversity m.asures but positively correlated with regeneration. Am.ng all the attributes of gaps, regeneration was significantly positively correlated with light intensity. Gaps m.intained species diversity and favored regeneration of woody species. In addition to gap size and age, other gap ecological attributes also affected species diversity and regeneration.

A m.lti-walled carbon nanotube （m.CNT）-cetyltrim.thylam.onium.brom.de （CRAB） surfactant com. posite m.dified glassy carbon electrode （GCE） was developed as a novel system.for the determ.nation of 4-am.noantipyrine（AAP）. The oxidation process was irreversible over the pH range studied and exhibited a diffusion controlled behavior. All experim.ntal param.ters were optim.zed. The com.ination of m.CNT-CRAB endows the biosensor with large surface area, good biological com.atibility, electricity and stability, high selectivity and sensitivity. m.CNT-CTAB/GCE electrode gave a linear response for AAP from.5.0 x 10-9 to 4.0 x 10-8 m.with a detection lim.t of 1.63 x 10 lo m. The m.dified electrode showed good selectivity against interfering species and also exhibited good reproducibility. The present elec- trochem.cal sensor based on the m.CNT-CFAB/GCE electrode was applied to the determ.nation of AAP in real sam.les.
