Clinical features of coronary artery ectasia in the elderly

Objective To investigate the incidence, imaging and clinical characteristics in elderly patients with coronary artery ectasia （CAE）. methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with CAE who underwent coronary angiography between January 2006 and December 2012. According to age, the enrolled patients were divided into two groups （elderly group, age≥ 65 years; non-elderly group, age 〈 65 years）. The clinical feature, imaging characteristics and the 5-year survival rate of the two groups were *** The preva-lence of CAE in elderly patients was 0.33%. Patients in elderly group were found to have significantly higher proportion of female （30.1%vs. 10.1%,P〈 0.001）, three-vessel disease （60.5%vs. 45.2%,P = 0.003） and localized ectasia （55.0%vs. 40.2%,P = 0.003）. In addition, body mass index （20.90 ± 2.71 kg/m2vs. 22.31 ± 2.98 kg/m2,P 〈 0.001） and percentage of current smokers （45.0%vs. 64.6%,P 〈 0.001） were significantly lower in elderly group. Cumulative survival curves demonstrated reduced 5-year cumulative survival at the follow-up in the elderly group compared with the non-elderly group （88.0%vs. 96.0%,P = 0.002）. But the 5-year event free survival rate failed to show a significant difference between the two groups （31.0%vs. 35.0%,P= 0.311）.ConclusionThe prevalence of CAE in elderly patients was 0.33%, which was about 1/3 of the entire numbers of CAE patients. There were significant differences between the elderly and the non-elderly patients with CAE in terms of coronary artery disease risk factors and coronary artery ectatic characteristics. CAE might be asso-ciated with increased mortality risk in the elderly.

Fabrication of sharp silicon hollow microneedles by deep-reactive ion etching towards minimally invasive diagnostics

microneedle technologies have the potential for expanding the capabilities of wearable health monitoring from physiology to *** paper presents the fabrication of silicon hollow microneedles by a deep-reactive ion etching(DRIE)process,with the aim of exploring the feasibility of microneedle-based in-vivo monitoring of biomarkers in skin *** devices shall have the ability to allow the sensing elements to be integrated either within the needle borehole or on the backside of the device,relying on capillary filling of the borehole with dermal interstitial fluid(ISF)for transporting clinically relevant biomarkers to the sensor *** modified DRIE process was utilized for the anisotropic etching of circular holes with diameters as small as 30μm to a depth of>300μm by enhancing ion bombardment to efficiently remove the fluorocarbon passivation ***,isotropic wet and/or dry etching was utilized to sharpen the needle due to faster etching at the pillar top,achieving tip radii as small as 5μ*** sharp microneedles have been demonstrated to be sufficiently robust to penetrate porcine skin without needing any aids such as an impact-insertion applicator,with the needles remaining mechanically intact after repetitive *** capillary filling of DRIE-etched through-wafer holes with water has also been demonstrated,showing the feasibility of use to transport the analyte to the target sites.

Excess lipid storage in adipose tissue results in the development of obesity and other metabolic disorders including diabetes,fatty liver and cardiovascular *** lipid droplet(LD)is an important subcellular organelle responsible for lipid *** previously observed that Fsp27,a member of the CIDE family proteins,is localized to LD-contact sites and promotes atypical LD fusion and ***,a close homolog of Fsp27,is expressed at high levels in brown adipose ***,the exact role of Cidea in promoting LD fusion and lipid storage in adipose tissue remains ***,we expressed Cidea in Fsp27-knockdown adipocytes and observed that Cidea has similar activity to Fsp27 in promoting lipid storage and LD fusion and ***,we generated Cidea and Fsp27 double-deficient mice and observed that these animals had drastically reduced adipose tissue mass and a strong lean *** addition,Cidea/Fsp27 double-deficient mice had improved insulin sensitivity and were intolerant to ***,we observed that the brown and white adipose tissues of Cidea/Fsp27double-deficient mice had significantly reduced lipid storage and contained smaller LDs compared to those of Cidea or Fsp27single deficient ***,these data reveal an important role of Cidea in controlling lipid droplet fusion,lipid storage in brown and white adipose tissue,and the development of obesity.

In situ polymerization of aniline in electrospun microfibers

Conductive microfibers with an average diameter of ca. 1.0 μm were prepared by in situ polymerization of aniline, in which poly（vinylchloride-acrylonitrile）（PVC-AN） was used as the filament-material in electrospinning to form precursor microfibers and carry the aniline monomers. Fourier-transform infrared （FTIR） results demonstrated that PANi was successfully polymerized in the microfibers. The morphology of the PVC-AN-PANi microfibers was observed by scanning electron microscopy （SEm）. Results of differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the polymer composite of PVC-AN-PANi formed via molecular interactions. Although the conductivity of PVC-AN-PANi microfibers was still limited （2.2 × 10^-8 S/cm）, this method provided an effective and convenient approach for preparing highly uniform and soft microfibrous electrodes.

Seasonal trend of ambient PCDD/Fs in Tianjin City, northern China using active sampling strategy

The spatial concentrations, seasonal trends, profiles and congener pairs of ambient polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins （PCDDs） and polychlorinated dibenzofurans （PCDFs） were investigated within a seasonally active sampling scheme during Jun 2008 and Jan 2009 in Tianjin City, northern China. The PCDD/F concentrations ranged 14.2-172 fg I-TEQ/m3 （average 69.3 fg I-TEQ/m3） in summer and （89.8-1.01） x 103 fg I-TEQ/m3 （average 509 fg I-TEQ/m3） in winter, respectively, except for the E-waste dismantling site where much higher values were observed （1.04 x 103 fg I-TEQ]m3 in summer and 7.123 x 103 fg I-TEQ/m3 in winter）. The results indicated a significantly seasonal trend with higher TEQ values in winter as compared with summer, which could be related to increased emission sources and seasonal variations of the atmospheric boundary layer height. 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF was the dominant contributor to the total PCDD/F toxic equivalents, and 2,3,7,8-TCDD was detected at almost all the sampling sites in winter. most of the similarly substituted PCDD/F congener pairs exhibited high correlations, suggesting that they might have similar environmental fate or sources. But different seasonal and spatial distributions of PCDD/F concentrations indicated that the emission sources might be intermittent.

A novel nanofluid of modified carbon black nanoparticles for enhanced oil recovery in low permeability reservoirs

A novel nanofluid of modified carbon black(mCB)nanoparticles was initially developed for enhanced oil recovery(EOR)in low permeability *** mCB nanoparticles were obtained via a three-step reaction involving modification by oxidation,acyl chlorination,and activated *** nano-particles were spherically dispersed,with an average size of 72.3 *** with carbon black(CB)nanoparticles,dispersed mCB nanoparticles can effectively reduce the oil-water interfacial tension(IFT)to 10^(-2)mN/m and change the surface wettability of sand *** on the results of core flooding experiments,the mCB nanoparticles exhibited a better EOR capacity than surfactants and CB nano-particles,and the final oil recovery was significantly increased by 27.27%.The core scanning test showed that the mCB nanoparticles could plug high permeability channels by adsorbing onto the surfaces of sand particles and forming larger aggregates that bridge across pores or throats,resulting in a higher swept *** synergistic effects of improved swept volume and oil displacement efficiency were the EOR mechanisms of the mCB *** studies indicate that these mCB nanoparticles have excellent potential for EOR in low permeability reservoirs.

Boron is an essential microelement for plant *** is one of the most cultivated fruits and vegetables in the world,and boron deficiency severely inhibits its yield and ***,the mechanism of tomato in response to boron deficiency remains largely ***,we investigated the physiological and molecular bases of the boron deficiency response in hydroponically grown tomato *** deficiency repressed the expression of genes associated with nitrogen metabolism,while it induced the expression of genes related to the pentose phosphate pathway,thereby altering carbon flow to provide energy for plants to cope with *** deficiency increased the accumulation of copper,manganese and iron,thereby maintaining chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency at the early stage of *** addition,boron deficiency downregulated the expression of genes involved in cell wall organization and reduced the contents of pectin and cellulose in roots,ultimately retarding root ***,boron deficiency markedly altered phytohormone levels and signaling pathways in *** contents of jasmonic acid,jasmonoy1-L-isoleucine,trans-zeatin riboside,abscisic acid,salicylic acid,and SA glucoside were decreased;in contrast,the contents of isopentenyladenine riboside and ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid were increased in the roots of boron-deficient tomato *** results collectively indicate that tomato roots reprogram carbon/nitrogen metabolism,alter cell wall components and modulate phytohormone pathways to survive boron *** study provides a theoretical basis for further elucidating the adaptive mechanism of tomato in response to boron deficiency.

Role of Oral misoprostol in First Trimester Abortion: A Prospective Study at CmH, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Background: misoprostol has been used for medical abortion. We conducted this prospective study to see the efficacy of oral misoprostol in our tertiary Hospital. Objective: Objective of this study was to assess the efficiency, safety and compliance of misoprostol in first trimester abortion. materials and methods: This prospective study was undertaken in obstetrics and gynecology dept of CmH Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2014 up to Dec 2014. A total 50 patients of incomplete abortion (54%), missed abortion (30%), anembryonic pregnancy (14%) and inevitable abortion (2%) of s of gestation were the targeted population. Study population was diagnosed from history, physical examination and ultrasonogram had received 600 microgram misoprostol orally. If the pregnancy was not completely evacuated at this time another dose of misoprostol was given. All women returned for follow-up care 7 days later. If the pregnancy was not completely evacuated at this time, women underwent immediate surgical evacuation. Efficacy was defined as the percent of women discharged from the study without need for surgical intervention. Results: 30 patients had complete evacuation after 1st dose, 12 cases needed 2nd dose and only 2 cases needed 3rd dose. Remaining 6 cases needed surgical evacuation. Efficacy was satisfactory (85%) and analysis revealed statistically significant (p 0.05). Conclusion: management of first trimester abortion with oral misoprostol is highly effective and highly acceptable.
