Hydroxyapatite composites with carbon allotropes:Preparation,properties,and applications

Hydroxyapatite(HA)and its composites with inorganic additives,dopants,and polymers is a rapidly developing branch in the materials chemistry.In particular,carbon allotropes are widely used in these composites being widely applied for medical purposes.Observing a gap of insufficient generalization of recent achievements in the field of the HA/Carbon composites,in this review we present the state of the art of the field of HA composites and hybrids with classic carbon allotropes and nanocarbons.these composites are known for carbon nanotubes,nanofibers,graphene and its oxidized forms,as well as,in a lesser grade,for graphite,fullerenes,nanodiamonds,carbon nanofoams,etc.these composites can be fabricated by a variety of classic and less-common methods,such as co-precipitation(with or without ultrasonic treatment),CVD,hot isostatic pressing,hydrothermal,spark plasma sintering,biomimetic mineralization,thermal and plasma spray,electrochemical and electrophoretic deposition,self-assembling,3D printing,electrospinning,and lyophilisation,among others.Combination of various synthesis techniques can be also carried out for composite preparation.Natural or synthetic HA can be used as it is for further interaction with carbon allotropes or it can be first prepared and then reacted with carbon counterpart;similarly,carbon allotropes can be introduced into the interaction with HA directly or they can be first synthesized,in particular from biomass.Resulting biocompatible composites can be produced in the form of coatings,powders,and scaffolds and can additionally contain quantitative amounts of third phases,frequently natural or synthetic polymers.In these composites,especially with O-containing functionalizing groups,HA disadvantages could be considerably decreased with simultaneous enhancement of mechanical properties,becoming similar to human bone,chemical stability and biocompatibility,as well as possessing antibacterial effect.GO→G reduction and higher HA decoration were observed in several experiments.the morphology of p

During the winter period（January–March 2016）, the total suspended particles（tSP） and particulate matter smaller than 2.5 μm（PM2.5） were characterized by the application of various analytical techniques in four zones of the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey in Mexico. to evaluate the seasonal variation of some elements in the particulate matter, the results of this study were compared with those obtained during the summer season（July–September 2015）. the speciation of the C_（1s） signal by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the contribution of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons as the main components in both seasons. Conversely, carboxylic groups associated with biogenic emissions were detected only in winter. the percentages of SO_4^（2-） ions were lower in winter, possibly caused by the decrease in the solar radiation, and relative humidity recorded. the results of the ICP analysis revealed that Fe, Zn and Cu were the most abundant metals in both tSP and PM2.5 in the two seasons. there were significant seasonal variations for concentrations of As, Ni and Zn in the urban area and for Fe, As, Cd, Ni and Zn in the industrial zone. this was attributed to the greater burning of fuels as well as to an increase in vehicular traffic, the effect of thermal inversion and changes in some meteorological parameters. the results of the sequential microanalysis by Raman spectroscopy and SEM/EDS allowed observation of deposits of carbonaceous material on the particles and to perform the speciation of particles rich in Fe and Pb, which helped infer their possible emission sources.

High Dimension Multivariate Data Analysis for Small Group Samples of Chemical Volatile Profiles of African Nightshade Species

Quantitative headspace analysis of volatiles emitted by plants or any other living organisms in chemical ecology studies generates large multidimensional data that require extensive mining and refining to extract useful information. More often the number of variables and the quantified volatile compounds exceed the number of observations or samples and hence many traditional statistical analysis methods become inefficient. Here, we employed machine learning algorithm, random forest (RF) in combination with distance-based procedure, similarity percentage (SIMPER) as preprocessing steps to reduce the data dimensionality in the chemical profiles of volatiles from three African nightshade plant species before subjecting the data to non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). In addition, non-parametric methods namely permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) and analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) were applied to test hypothesis of differences among the African nightshade species based on the volatiles profiles and ascertain the patterns revealed by NMDS plots. Our results revealed that there were significant differences among the African nightshade species when the data’s dimension was reduced using RF variable importance and SIMPER, as also supported by NMDS plots that showed S. scabrum being separated from S. villosum and S. sarrachoides based on the reduced data variables. the novelty of our work is on the merits of using data reduction techniques to successfully reveal differences in groups which could have otherwise not been the case if the analysis were performed on the entire original data matrix characterized by small samples. the R code used in the analysis has been shared herein for interested researchers to customise it for their own data of similar nature.

Background Despite the increasing focus on strengthening One Health capacity building on global level, challenges remain in devising and implementing real-world interventions particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Recognizing these gaps, the One Health Action Commission (OHAC) was established as an academic community for One Health action with an emphasis on research agenda setting to identify actions for highest impact.Main text this viewpoint describes the agenda of, and motivation for, the recently formed OHAC. Recognizing the urgent need for evidence to support the formulation of necessary action plans, OHAC advocates the adoption of both bottom-up and top-down approaches to identify the current gaps in combating zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance, addressing food safety, and to enhance capacity building for context-sensitive One Health implementation.Conclusions By promoting broader engagement and connection of multidisciplinary stakeholders, OHAC envisions a collaborative global platform for the generation of innovative One Health knowledge, distilled practical experience and actionable policy advice, guided by strong ethical principles of One Health.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)causes significant global disease burden and is a leading cause of mortality.NAFLD induces a myriad of aberrant changes in hepatocytes at both the cellular and molecular level.Although the disease spectrum of NAFLD is widely recognised,the precise triggers for disease progression are still to be fully elucidated.Furthermore,the propagation to cirrhosis is poorly understood.Whilst some progress in terms of treatment options have been explored,an incomplete understanding of the hepatic cellular and molecular alterations limits their clinical utility.We have therefore reviewed some of the key pathways responsible for the pathogenesis of NAFLD such as innate and adaptative immunity,lipotoxicity and fibrogenesis,and highlighted current trials and treatment options for NAFLD patients.

Is Regular Probiotic Practice Safe for Management of Sepsis?

For decades,the gut has been thought to play an important role in sepsis pathogenesis.Sepsis is a serious life-threatening,chronic condition of an infection caused by dysregulated host immune response in most of the intensive care unit patients.Probiotics have dual roles in polymicrobial sepsis i.***.probiotics may induce sepsis in many cases and may prevent its prognosis in many cases.Experimental evidence from both pre-clinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that probiotic therapy ameliorates various inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor,interleukin-10(IL-10),IL-6,etc.,in septicemia.In addition,probiotic use was also found to reduce the severity of pathological conditions associated with irritable bowel disorder and prevent development of endocarditis in septicemia.On contrary,probiotic therapy in neonatal and athymic adult mice fail to provide any beneficial effects on mortality and sepsis-induced inflammation.Importantly,in few clinical trials probiotic use was found to aggravate sepsis by promoting inflammatory cascade rather than suppressing it.this review discusses various studies regarding the beneficial or harmful effects associated with probiotic therapy in sepsis.

Drought and heat are major environmental stresses that continually influence plant growth and development. Under field conditions, these stresses occur more frequently in combination than alone, which magnifies corresponding detrimental effects on the growth and productivity of agriculturally important crops. Plant responses to such abiotic stresses are quite complex and manifested in a range of developmental, molecular, and physiological modifications that lead either to stress sensitivity or tolerance/resistance. Maize (Zea mays L.) is known for its sensitivity to abiotic stresses, which often results in substantial loss in crop productivity. Bioaugmentation with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has the potential to mitigate the adverse effects of drought and heat stresses on plants. Hence, this is considered a promising and eco-friendly strategy to ensure sustainable and long-term maize production under adverse climatic conditions. these microorganisms possess various plant growth-promoting (PGP) characteristics that can induce drought and heat tolerance in maize plants by directly or indirectly influencing molecular, metabolic, and physiological stress responses of plants. this review aims to assess the current knowledge regarding the ability of PGPR to induce drought and heat stress tolerance in maize plants. Furthermore, the drought and heat stress-induced expression of drought and heat stress response genes for this crop is discussed with the mechanisms through which PGPR alter maize stress response gene expression.

Simulation of vessel tissue remodeling with residual stress:an application to in-stent restenosis

We present a numerical procedure to model the artery wall remodeling stimulated by stenting considering varying degree of residual stresses.this framework sets up biological remodeling with the existence of residual stress.Previous studies suggest that the residual stress originates from the growth and remodeling of the premature tissue.Meanwhile,it is known that tissue remodeling can happen under mechanical loading.However,none of the existing research studies the impact of residual stress on the mechanical-driven growth of biomaterials.to fill this gap,we build a numerical framework that couples the residual stress with a growth model,and examine its impact on tissue remodeling.the proposed approach is applied to in-stent restenosis,where the tissue remodeling process is modeled with finite element method,and the residual stress is generated geometrically using open angle method.the result shows that residual stress reverses the radial distribution of stress concentration,which is ameliorated by tissue remodeling.the thickening of vessel wall tends to increase with residual stress,which links to more severe in-stent restenosis.the results demonstrate the important interplay between residual stress and tissue remodeling.the findings suggest that residual stress should be considered in the future simulation of tissue remodeling.

OpenIFEM:A High Performance Modular Open-Source Software of the Immersed Finite Element Method for Fluid-Structure Interactions

We present a high performance modularly-built open-source software-OpenIFEM.OpenIFEM is a C++implementation of the modified immersed finite element method(mIFEM)to solve fluid-structure interaction(FSI)problems.this software is modularly built to perform multiple tasks including fluid dynamics(incompressible and slightly compressible fluid models),linear and nonlinear solid mechanics,and fully coupled fluid-structure interactions.Most of open-source software packages are restricted to certain discretization methods;some are under-tested,under-documented,and lack modularity as well as extensibility.OpenIFEM is designed and built to include a set of generic classes for users to adapt so that any fluid and solid solvers can be coupled through the FSI algorithm.In addition,the package utilizes well-developed and tested libraries.It also comes with standard test cases that serve as software and algorithm validation.the software can be built on cross-platform,i.e.,Linux,Windows,and Mac OS,using CMake.Efficient parallelization is also implemented for high-performance computing for large-sized problems.OpenIFEM is documented using Doxygen and publicly available to download on GitHub.It is expected to benefit the future development of FSI algorithms and be applied to a variety of FSI applications.

System barriers to the provision of quality maternal health care in two regional teaching and referral hospitals in Kenya:a qualitative study

Objective:Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 66%of global maternal deaths.In Kenya,362 maternal deaths occur in every 100000 live births.Most of these deaths occur as a result of suboptimal quality care of mothers during labor,delivery,or within 24h of delivery.this study explored barriers that nurse-midwives encounter in trying to provide high-quality obstetric care during these periods.Methods:A qualitative research design utilizing focus group discussion as part of a mixed method study was used to find out the participants'experiences.Data were collected between February and March 2022 in the maternity units of two regional teaching and referral hospitals in Kenya.Eligible participants were nurse-midwives in charge of the maternity unit.the discussion was conducted in English,tape-recorded,and transcribed verbatim,Data were analyzed thematically,following Braun and Clarke 6-step framework.Nvivo version 7.0 computer software was used to facilitate this process.Results:two focused group discussions each involving seven participants were conducted.the participants agreed that maternal mortality due to postpartum hemorrhage and pregnancy-induced hypertension is a major health concern.Further,maternal care in the two hospitals was substandard.themes that emerged as barriers were:inadequate supplies;inadequate obstetric knowledge and skills;shortage of nurse-midwives,and inadequate support supervision.the underlying factors include inadequate funding by the county government and high staff turnover.Conclusion:this study showed that nurse-midwives are working under very difficult circumstances which are hindering the provision of quality maternal care.this is mainly due to system failures and inadequate nursemidwife numbers.targeted strategies need to be urgently implemented to mitigate these challenges to improve the quality of maternal health care.
