Plants grown on sewage sludge in south china and its relevance to sludge stabilization and metal removal

The production of sewage sludge in china has been increasing sharply in order to treat 40% of the municipal sewage in 2005 as planned by central government. The main sludge disposal method is landfill owing to heavy metal contamination, but it presents an attractive potential for agricultural land application. Experiments were carried out to study the simultaneous metal removal and sludge stabilization by plants. The sludge samples were collected from Datansha Wastewater Treatment Plant of Guangzhou, it contained excessive cu and Zn compared with the chinese National standard for Agricultural Use of sewage sludge. Plants growing on sludge beds were investigated to follow their growth and metal uptake. 30 sludge plants were identified during 1 year's observation. A Zn high accumulating and high growth rate plant (Alocasia macrorrhiza) was selected and grown on sludge beds in plots. The water, organic matter, heavy metals and nutrients contents, the E. coli number and the cress seed germination index were monitored for the sludge samples collected monthly. The plant growth parameters and its heavy metals contents were also determined. The sewage sludge treated by plants could be stabilized at about 5 months, the E. coli number was significantly decreased and the cress seed germination index attained 100%. crop on sludge could ameliorate the sludge drying. The experiments are continuing to find out the appropriate plant combination for simultaneous sludge stabilization and metal removal for an acceptable period. comparisons between the proposed processes and other methods for treating produced sludge such as composting, chemical and bacterial leaching were discussed.

The activation and the resulting response of the immune system to antigens comprise different complex processes and cells. This paper aims at modeling the processes of recognition and learning of the immune system by means of the thermostatted kinetic theory methods. specifically, the thermostatted kinetic framework is firstly generalized for taking into account that in some processes of proliferation of the cells, the rate is also function of the degree of information exchanged amongst cells. In particular, within the new framework, a mathematical model is proposed for miming the recognition process of the immune system through the definition of interactions between the cytoto^ic and humoral components of the adaptive immune system via T- and B-cells. The model validation is obtained by performing a sensitivity analysis on the parameters which depicts the main emerging phenomena and the different phases of the recognition and learning of the immune system.

Bajiaolian, one of the species in the Mayapple family ( Podophyllum pelatum ), has been widely used as a traditional chinese herbal medicine for the remedies of snake bites, general weakness, poisons, condyloma accuminata, lymphadenopathy, and certain tumors in china. In Western medicine, Podophyllum was first used medically as a laxative in the early 19th century. since 1940, the resin of podophyllum has also been used topically for various skin lesions, such as warts and condyloma. Human poisonings have been reported.An animal model was established to investigate the neurotoxic effects of Bajiaolian. Podophyllotoxin, the major active ingredient in Podophyllum, was injected (ip) to young adult male rats at doses of 0, 5, 10, or 15 mg-kg-1 b.w.. The animals were sacrificed 72 h after injection.Neuronal changes were readily observable in animals treated with 10 or 15 mg-kg-1 of the toxin. Edematous changes of the anterior horn motoneurons were observed in the spinal cord. No neuronal necrosis was found. The type of neuronal swelling is believed to be only a transient change and would probably subside with time if no further assaults occur. More serious and perhaps longer term of changes were found in the dorsal ganglion neurons and the nerve fibers (axons) in the central and peripheral nervous system. severe depletion of the Nissl substance (RNA/polyribosomes) was observed in the dorsal root ganglion neurons. Alterations in these sensory neurons would give rise to and correlate with the sensory disturbances experienced by the patients. Bodian staining also revealed a dose-related increase in the coarseness (thickness) of the nerve fibers (axons) in the cerebellum, cerebral cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord.This is the first scientific study showing the neurotoxicity of Bajiaolian, a commonly used chinese herbal medicine. This work studies the influence of anisothermal iron sintering process on hollow cathode discharge characteristics. Two independent cathodes form an annular discharge. The pressed cylindrical iron powder sample, acting as central cathode, was placed concentrically in the interior of an external cathode. The external cathode, machined from an AIsI 310 steel bar, besides acting to confine the geometry of the plasma, can also acts as a source of alloying elements. The sample heating is a function of the ion bombardment energy and, so, of the discharge electrical parameters: current (or current density) and the effective potential applied to the cathode. successive anisothermal sintering is performed in a same sample until the reproducibility of the electrical parameters being obtained. The heating experiments up to 1250 °c, in a gas mixture of 80% Ar + 20% H2, at pressure of 133 Pa, at flow of 2xlO"6 mV, with an inter-cathode radial space of 5.8 mm, were carried out. It was verified the metallurgical evolution of the iron sample sintering process influences the current-?0n (time switched-on of the pulse) characteristics of the discharge.

Background:scalp combing,as an ancient method of health care,has been used for thousands of years in traditional chinese *** this method is considered to be beneficial for the blood circulation of the head,the underlying mechanisms remain ***:Both human participants and mice were used in this *** participants,the scalp was stimulated by combing continuously for 5 min,and the temperature was measured using infrared thermal imaging before and after *** mice,the temperature was determined before and at 5,15,and 30 min after a 5-min scalp mechanical stimulation(sMs).Additionally,the vasculature of the mice was labeled with retro-orbital fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran injection,and the capillaries were observed directly under a confocal *** in vivo cLARITY imaging and the spectrofluorometric detection of Evans Blue dye extravasation,the bloodebrain barrier permeability was ***:sMs increased the temperature of the left ear significantly in human(P=.0247)while can slightly increase the temperature of the right ear and the face without significant difference(P>.05).Moreover,sMs can significantly slow the decrease in the temperature of the external auditory canal at 5 min(P=.0153)and in body temperature at 15 min(P=.0295)after sMs whereas no significant difference in body temperature at 30 min(P>.05)compared with control ***,capillaries of the ear with a diameter of less than 8 mm were significantly dilated(P=.0006)following sMs and the number of dextran dots was higher at 15 min(P>.05)and 30 min(F=10.98,P=.037)after sMs intervention compared with control ***:Our study provides strong evidence to support the notion that scalp combing can improve extra-and intracranial blood circulation under healthy conditions.

In this paper we proceed with the multiscale analysis of semilinear damped stochastic wave motions. The analysis is made by combining the well-known sigma convergence method with its stochastic counterpart, associated to some compactness results such as the Prokhorov and skorokhod theorems. We derive the equivalent model, which is of the same type as the micro-model. One of the novelties of the work is that the corrector problem is solved in the classical sense of distributions,thereby allowing numerical computations of the homogenized coefficients.
