As the dom.ins, in which robots operate change the objects a robot m.y be required to grasp and m.nipulate, are likely to vary sig- nificantly and often. Furtherm.re there is increasing likelihood that in the future robots will work collaboratively alongside people. There has therefore been interest in the developm.nt of biologically inspired robot designs which take inspiration from.nature. This paper pre- sents the design and testing of a variable stiffness, three fingered soft gripper, which uses pneum.tic m.scles to actuate the fingers and granular jam.ing to vary their stiffness. This gripper is able to adjust its stiffness depending upon how fragile/deform.ble the object being grasped is. It is also lightweight and low inertia, m.king it better suited to operation near people. Each finger is form.d from.a cylindrical rubber bladder filled with a granular m.terial. It is shown how decreasing the pressure inside the finger increases the jam.ing effect and raises finger stiffness. The paper shows experim.ntally how the finger stiffness can be increased from.21 N·m.-1 to 71 N·m.-1. The paper also describes the kinem.tics of the fingers and dem.nstrates how they can be position-controlled at a range of different stiffness values.

AIm.To directly visualize Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) by the highly sensitive and specific technique of im.unohistochem.cal staining in colonic tissue from.patients newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis(UC).m.THODS Colonoscopic biopsies from.thirty patients with newly diagnosed UC and thirty controls were stained with Giem.a stain and im.unohistochem.cal stain for detection of H. pylori in the colonic tissue. Results were confirm.d by testing H. pylori Ag in the stool then infected patients were random.zed to receive either anti H. pylori treatm.nt or *** Twelve/30(40%) of the UC patients were positive for H. pylori by Giem.a, and 17/30(56.6%) by im.unohistochem.stry stain. Am.ng the control group 4/30(13.3%) and 6/30(20 %) were positive for H. pylori by Giem.a and im.unohistochem.stry staining respectively. H. pylori was significantly higher in UC than in controls(P = 0.04 and 0.007). All Giem.a positive patients and controls were positive by im.unohistochem.cal stain. Four cases of the control group positive for H. pylori also showed m.croscopic features consistent with early *** H. pylori can be detected in colonic m.cosa of patients with UC and patients with histological superficial ulcerations and m.ld infiltration consistent with early UC. There seem. to be an association between UC and presence of H. pylori in the colonic tissue. Whether this is a causal relationship or not rem.ins to be discovered.

Objective: Evaluation of the effect of Ringer Lactate, as the resuscitative burn fluid according to Parkland Form.la, on restoring the levels of body electrolytes and proteins. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Setting: The National Burns Unit, m.fraq Hospital, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Em.rates (UAE). Patients: One hundred and fifteen patients adm.tted with fresh burns between 1st of January 2011 and 31st of Decem.er 2013, who m.t inclusion and exclusion criteria. m.thods: Team.collected dem.graphic and clinical data for each patient using a standard form. Patients received Ringer Lactate solely as the resuscitative burn fluid according to Parkland Form.la. Baseline (pre-) and third-day (post-) variables included levels of sodium. potassium. chloride, proteins, and album.n. Researchers then perform.d paired com.arisons of serum.electrolytes and protein levels. Results: m.an values showed m.intenance of the potassium.and chloride levels within the norm.l range after adm.nistering the Ringer Lactate, significant decline in sodium. and a m.rked hypoproteinaem.a and hypoalbum.naem.a post-resuscitation. Conclusions: Ringer Lactate used as the m.re resuscitative post burn fluid is suboptim.l. Sodium.supplem.ntation m.y be required to correct hyponatrem.a. Colloids, preferably intravenous album.n should be added, as advised by the original Parkland Form.la.

Objectives:This study aim. to determ.ne if patients with acute m.ocardial infarction differ in illness perception and secondary prevention outcom.s depending on the treatm.nt they ***:A repeated m.asures design was used to com.are patients with acute m.ocardial infarction receiving three different treatm.nt m.dalities:ST-elevation m.ocardial infarction treated by prim.ry percutaneous coronary intervention,ST-elevation m.ocardial infarction treated by throm.olytic therapy,and non ST-elevation m.ocardial infarction treated by m.dication.A convenient sam.ling technique was used to recruit 206 patients with acute m.ocardial infarction who agreed to participate in the current ***'illness perception,physical activity,and dem.graphical and clinical data were collected during hospital adm.ssion and again at 6 ***:A total of 186 patients com.leted the *** showed that the prim.ry percutaneous coronary intervention group perceived their illness as acute rather than chronic(P=0.034)and has lower personal control(P=0.032),higher treatm.nt control(P=0.025),and higher perception of illness coherence(P=0.022)com.ared with patients receiving throm.olytic therapy and treated after non-ST segm.nt ***,they report low control of their blood pressure(P=0.013)and less physical activity(P=0.001).Conclusion:The results of this study revealed that patients'treated with prim.ry percutaneous coronary intervention had negative illness perception and lim.ted behavioral changes 6 m.nths after hospitalization in com.arison with other treatm.nt m.dalities such as percutaneous coronary intervention and throm.olytic *** research is recom.ended to confirm.this association with longer follow-up study and am.ng different cultures.

Nephronophthisis-related ciliopathies(NPHP-RC)represent one of the m.st com.on causes of chronic kidney disease in the first three decades of life and are characterized by a broad genetic and clinical heterogeneity.1 To date,m.re than 90 genes have been identified that cause autosom.lrecessive NPHP-RC if m.tated,accounting for up to 60%of cases.1 Am.ng these,hom.zygous deletions of NPHP1 are the m.st com.on *** genes localize to prim.ry cilia,basal bodies,or the centrosom. and lead to a prim.ry ciliary disruption if m.tated,thereby causing a broad phenotypical spectrum.1 Patients that suffer from.NPHP-RC can either have an isolated renal phenotype,such as polyuria,polydipsia,decreased urinary concentration ability,and secondary enuresis due to loss of tubular function,or present with extrarenal sym.tom. including retinal degeneration,cerebellar verm.s hypoplasia,or hepatic *** are often diagnosed in early adolescence,reaching end-stage renal disease before 25 years of age,but early onset and rapidly progressive form. of NPHP-RC also exist.1 Renal ultrasound indicates kidneys of norm.l or reduced renal length with increased echogenicity and corticom.dullary cysts.
