Different Mortality Effects of Extreme Temperature Stress in Three Large City Clusters of Northern and Southern China

Extreme temperature events have affected Chinese city residents more frequently and intensively since the early 2000 s, but few studies have identified the impacts of extreme temperature on mortality in different city clusters of China. This study first used a distributed lag,nonlinear model to estimate the county/district-specific effects of extreme temperature on nonaccidental and cardiovascular mortality. The authors then applied a multivariate meta-analysis to pool the estimated effects in order to derive regional temperature–mortality relationship in three large city clusters—the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH)region, the Yangtze River Delta(YRD), and the Pearl River Delta(PRD), which represent northern and southern regions. With 0–3 days' lag, the strongest heat-related mortality effect was observed in the BTH region(with relative risk(RR) of 1.29; 95% confidence interval(CI):1.13–1.47), followed by the YRD(RR = 1.25; 95% CI:1.13–1.35) and the PRD(RR = 1.14; 95% CI: 1.01–1.28)areas. With 0–21 days' lag, the cold effect was pronounced in all city clusters, with the highest extreme cold-related mortality risk found in the PRD area(RR = 2.27; 95% CI:1.63–3.16), followed by the YRD area(RR = 1.85; 95%CI: 1.56–2.20) and BTH region(RR = 1.33; 95% CI:0.96–1.83). People in the southern regions tended to be more vulnerable to cold stress, but the northern population was more sensitive to heat stress. By examining the effects of extreme temperature in city clusters of different regions,our findings underline the role of adaptation towards heat and cold, which has important implications for public health policy making and practice.

Random numbers of heavy metal(Cd, As, and Pb) concentrations were created by Monte Carlo simulation of 16 representative sites in five soil zones from published papers for subsequent research. Ordinary kriging and significant analyses were used in a dataset of the 16 *** of heavy metals in topsoil was found to be mainly influenced by zonality, non-zonality, and anthropogenic inputs. Nevertheless, human-induced correlations among heavy metals could not be detected on a regional spatial scale. Soil zone and landform were found to be representations of zonality and non-zonality, *** was found that in east China, heavy metals accumulated in the south, especially the southwest, and were not uniform in each soil zone, indicating that zonality was not the unique influencing factor of soil environment quality. Both soil zone and landform may be responsible for heavy metal concentrations. An analysis of variance, coefficients of divergence analysis, was applied to assess the effects of soil zone and landforms on the variation of heavy metal concentrations in the study region. The influence of soil zone and landform was relatively homogeneous in areas of the north; while in the south, landform played a dominating role. Therefore, soil environment quality formed mainly under the effect of landform. This was mainly due to the fact that landform in fluences other natural environment elements including climate, further impacting the division of soil zone.

A highly sensitive potentiometric immunosensor for the diagnoses of epidemic dis-eases has been developed by means of self-assembly to immobilize hepatitis B surface antibody(HBsAb)for the detection of hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)as a *** first,the Nafion containing-SO^(-)_(3)groups was immobilized on a platinum electrode surface to absorb the-NH^(+)_(3)groups of antibody molecules via the opposite-charged adsorption technique,in the meantime,hepatitis B surface antibodies were adsorbed onto the surface of Au nanoparticles,then hepatitis B surface antibodies and Au nanopartilces were entrapped into polyvinyl butyral on the surface of Nafion *** modified procedure was further characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)and cyclic voltammetry(CV).The influence and factors influencing the per-formance of resulting immunosensor were studied in *** resulting immunosensor exhib-ited sigmoid curve with log HBsAg concentrations,high sensitivity,wide linear range from 26 to 1280 ng·mL^(-1)with a detection limit of 3.1 ng·mL^(-1),rapid potentiometric response(4 months).Analytical results of clinical samples show that the developed immunoassay is comparable with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELISAs)method,implying a promising alternative approach for detecting HBsAg in the clinical diagnosis.

Influence of background pressure on the microstructure and optical properties of Mo/Si multilayers fabricated by magnetron sputtering

Mo/Si multilayers were fabricated by using magnetron sputtering method at different background pressures:6×10-5 Torr,3×10-5 Torr,and 3×10-6 *** reflectivity of the Mo/Si multilayers increased from 1.93% to 16.63%,and the center wavelength revealed a blue shift to 0.12 nm with the decrease of background *** incident X-ray diffraction(GIXRD) indicated that multilayers fabricated at high background pressure possessed better periodic structure and thinner Mo-on-Si *** crystallization degree in(110) preferred the orientation of Mo layers and serious interdiffusion in the Mo/Si multilayers fabricated at low background pressure were observed by transmission electron microscopy(TEM).According to quantitative analysis of microstructural parameters,the Mo layers thickness and thickness ratio of Mo/Si multilayers both decreased and approached the design value gradually by the decrease of background *** addition,the thicknesses of Mo-on-Si and Si-on-Mo interlayers were 1.17 nm and 0.85 nm *** is suggested that the influence of background pressures on the microstructure has a critical role in determining the optical properties of Mo/Si multilayers.
