Bi2Se3 thin films were electrochemically deposited on Ti and indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates, respectively, at room temperature, using Bi（NO3）3·5H2O and SeO2 as starting materials in diluted HNO3 solution. A conventional three-electrode cell was used with a platinum sheet as a counter electrode, and a saturated calomel electrode was used as a reference electrode. The films were annealed in argon atmosphere. The influence of cold isostatic pressing before annealing on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of the films was investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the film grown on the indium tin oxide-coated glass substrate is pure rhombohedral Bi2Se3, and the film grown on the Ti substrate consists of both rhombohedral and orthorhombic Bi2Se3.

Barium titanate nano-powders were synthesized under defined conditions. The surface of these particles was successfully modified by coating with urea. The characteristics of these composite particles were studied by X-ray diffraction,transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The electro-rheological (ER) effects of these particles suspended in methyl-silicone oil were measured. The particle,methyl-silicon oil ratio was 30%-35% weight percent. The experimental results indicate that these ER particles exhibit a remarkable ER effect. The ER fluid shows Bingham characteristics and the static shearing stress increases with an increase of the electric field strength. The highest static shearing stress under a 4 MV/m electric field is 13.2 kPa at room temperature,an increase of about 8.7 kPa compared to untreated BaTiO(C2O4)2 powders.

Montmorillonite particles coated with titania were synthesized by means of a sol-gel method to use with elec-tro-rheological material. The characteristics of these composite particles were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron mi-croscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The electro-rheological (ER) effects were measured after these particles were mixed with methyl-silicon oil by 20% and 30% (weight percent). The experimental results show that these montmorillonite/titania particles exhibit a marked ER effect compared with pure montmorillonite particles under a DC electric field. The highest static yield stress is up to 4.28 kPa, which is an increase of about 3.13 kPa over that of untreated montmorillonite pow-der under the electrical field strength of 3.2 kV/mm at room temperature.

A new frame-shifting mutation of UGT1A1 gene causes type I Crigler-Najjar syndrome

We present a case of severe persisting unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in a Uigur infant boy, eventually diagnosed as Crigler-Najjar syndrome type I. DNA analysis of his blood of the UGTIA1 gene sequence demonstrated that he was homozygous for an insertion mutation causing a change of the coding exons with a frame-shift, resulting in the substitution of 27 abnormal amino acid residues in his hepatic bilirubin uridine diphosphoglucuronyl transferase enzyme. Both of his parents were heterozygous for the same mutation. A novel frame-shifting mutation of the UGTIA1 gene was found, confirming the diagnosis of Crigler-Najjar syndrome type I for this patient.

Vitamin D status among infants, children, and adolescents in southeastern China

Objective： Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are global public health problems, which must first be identified before they can be appropriately addressed, and yet information is strikingly lacking in most parts of the Asia and Pacific region. The study aimed to document and account for the actual situation in Wenzhou on the southeastern coast of China. Subjects and methods： Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels among a total of 5845 infants, preschool children, school children, and adolescents aged 1-18 years were examined between March 2014 and February 2015. Results： Their mean levels were （110.2＋26.8）, （77.5＋25.7）, （55.6＋15.4）, and （47.2＋13.9） nmol/L, respectively. Older age groups were involved in increasing risk of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency. There were significant seasonal differences in its median level and prevalence of deficiency and insufficiency among school children and adolescents, but there was no significant sex difference in mean level and prevalence in any age group. Conclusions： Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency were prevalent among infants, preschool children, school children, and adolescents in Wenzhou. A vitamin D-rich diet and outdoor activities for 1-2 h per day under the natural conditions favorable to its endogeous synthesis do not suffice. The vitamin D status in Wenzhounese infants excelling over that in the US was the result of its supplementation thanks to the Chinese Medical Association recommendations, which should be conse- quently extended to more age groups. life style shaped by socio-economic environments affects vitamin D status. Knowledge on the importance of vitamin D for healthy growth should be popularized.

Multi-wire plaque crushing as a novel technique in treating chronic total occlusions

Background Failure of balloon catheter passing through the occluded segment accounts for 10%-15% of all procedures during percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI） for chronic total occlusion （CTO）. We sought to investigate an original technique for facilitating balloon catheter passing by multi-wire plaque crushing. Methods Between July 2000 and October 2007, 152 patients with 164 CTO lesions who had failed balloon passing were treated by multi-wire plaque crushing technique. The main process of this technique was to insert 1 or 2 wires along with the original wire located in the true lumen of CTO lesions after balloon failure for plaque crushing and then to withdraw the crushing wires to get an enlarged lumen inside of the occlusion segment, thus facilitating the balloon passing. Results Both overall lesion and technique success rates were 91.5% （150/164）. A total of 211 crushing wires were used during. PCI, including 1 crushing wire for 117 （71.3%） lesions and 2 crushing wires for 47 （28.7%） lesions. Approximately 57.3% （121/211） of all crushing wires were those already used in the same procedure. Technique failure occurred in 14 lesions （8.5%）. Technique failure was due to crushing wires entering false lumen （92.9%, 13/14） and coronary perforation （7.1%, 1/14）. Major procedural complications included coronary perforation （1 case） and severe coronary dissection （2 cases）, all of which were successfully treated. Conclusions Multi-wire plaque crushing technique is effective in facilitating balloon catheter passing during CTO PCI. It is feasible, economical and relatively safe with a low rate of procedural complications.
