The number of Korean students enrolling in universities overseas is rapidly growing. However, these populations are underrepresented in sexuality related research, despite the possibility of sexually risky behavior in overseas university students. We examined the sexual knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of university students in Korea and studying in the United States. Data were collected—131 Korean students in Korea and in the US using a web-based self-report questionnaire system. Students in the US showed greater total sexual knowledge than students studied in Korea. There were differences in the sexual knowledge, attitude and behaviors according to general characteristics between both groups. Although students in the USA had a higher level of sexual knowledge, both students in the USA and in Korea had a low level of sexual knowledge overall.

AIM： To clarify the mechanism underlying the antidiabetic activities of cortex cinnamomi extract （CCE）. METHODS： To induce in vivo diabetes, mice were injected with streptozotocin （STZ） via a tail vein （100 mg STZ/kg body weight）. To determine the effects of CCE, mice were administered CCE twice daily for 7 d by oral gavage starting 1 wk before the STZ injection. Blood glucose and plasma insulin concentration were measured as an index of diabetes. Also, to induce cytotoxicity of RINm5F cells, we treated with cytokines （IL-1β （2.0 ng/mL） and IFN-γ （100 U/mL））. Cell viability and nitric oxide production were measured colorimetrically. Inducible nitric oxide synthase （iNOS） mRNA and protein expression were determined by RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. The activation of NF-κβ was assayed by using gel mobility shift assays of nuclear extracts. RESULTS： Treatment of mice with STZ resulted in hyperglycemia and hypoinsulinemia, which was further evidenced by immunohistochemical staining of islets. However, the diabetogenic effects of STZ were completely prevented when mice were pretreated with CCE. The inhibitory effect of CCE on STZ-induced hyperglycemia was mediated through the suppression of iNOS expression. In rat insulinoma RINm5F cells,CCE completely protected against interleukin-1β and interferon-y-mediated cytotoxicity. Moreover, RINm5F cells incubated with CCE showed significant reductions in interleukin-1β and interferon-y-induced nitric oxide production and in iNOS mRNA and protein expression, and these findings correlated well with in vivo observations. CONCLUSION： The molecular mechanism by which CCE inhibits iNOS gene expression appears to involve the inhibition of NF-κβ activation, These results reveal the possible therapeutic value of CCE for the prevention of diabetes mellitus progression,

Background Permanent vegetative state is defined as the impaired level of consciousness longer than 12 months after traumatic causes and 3 months after non-traumatic causes of brain injury. Although many studies assessed the cerebral metabolism in patients with acute and persistent vegetative state after brain injury, few studies investigated the cerebral metabolism in patients with permanent vegetative state. In this study, we performed the voxel-based analysis of cerebral glucose metabolism and investigated the relationship between regional cerebral glucose metabolism and the severity of impaired consciousness in patients with permanent vegetative state after acquired brain *** We compared the regional cerebral glucose metabolism as demonstrated by F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography from 12 patients with permanent vegetative state after acquired brain injury with those from 12 control subjects. Additionally, covariance analysis was performed to identify regions where decreased changes in regional cerebral glucose metabolism significantly correlated with a decrease of level of consciousness measured by JFK-coma recovery scare. Statistical analysis was performed using statistical parametric *** Compared with controls, patients with permanent vegetative state demonstrated decreased cerebral glucose metabolism in the left precuneus, both posterior cingulate cortices, the left superior parietal lobule （Pcorrected 〈0.001）, and increased cerebral glucose metabolism in the both cerebellum and the right supramarginal cortices （Pcorrected 〈0.001）. In the covariance analysis, a decrease in the level of consciousness was significantly correlated with decreased cerebral glucose metabolism in the both posterior cingulate cortices （Puncorrected 〈0.005）.Conclusion Our findings suggest that the posteromedial parietal cortex, which are part of neural network for consciousness, may be relevant structure for pathophysiological mechanism in pat

New height precise Earth Geopotential Model EGM08 made it possible to develop the value of the geoidal geopotential W0. This value is independent on Earth’s tides and others disturbances, therefore it can be used as basic quantity for many applications. Value W0 represents mean sea surface. W0 was developed from data of satellite altimetry which monitores actual ocean’s surface. This value is one of the four fundamental geodetic constants. This value has been accepted worldwide and is included to the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service Conventions (IERS Conventions) 2003, 2007. This value defines in principle parameters of level ellipsoid which best fit to the surface defined by W0. The body of this level ellipsoid produces normal gravity. We developed other important parameters for determination of the density deviations (VTT technology), i.e. values of normal gravity ge at the equator and gp at the pole on the elipsoid E0 and the value of parameter β. All parameters above used for development of VTT technology are supplied by GPS/leveling data that enable to create so-called density deviation maps at any place in the World. In comparison with gravity anomalies, the density deviations represent more precise density anomalous places in the Earth’s crust. A construction of density deviation map is applied at two from geologically different regions—the Western Carpathians and the Central African Rifts.

Nobiletin Prevents Body Weight Gain and Bone Loss in Ovariectomized C57BL/6J Mice

Obesity and osteoporosis are associated with estrogen deficiency following menopause. Therefore, it is important to prevent and treat both disorders to maintain a healthy life in postmenopausal women. Nobiletin, a polymethoxylated flavone, exhibits various pharmacologic effects, including anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effects of nobiletin on obesity, obesity-related metabolic disorders, and bone mass in ovariectomized (OVX) mice. Mice were divided into four groups and underwent sham operation or OVX. OVX mice were treated with 50 or 100 mg/kg nobiletin, or received vehicle alone (0.3% carboxyl methyl cellulose/0.5% dimethyl sulfoxide). Nobiletin decreased body weight gain and white adipose tissue weight in OVX mice. Nobiletin also decreased triglyceride levels, and tended to reduce plasma total cholesterol and glucose levels. Additionally, nobiletin prevented the reduction in bone mineral density of the trabecular region of the femur in OVX mice. Taken together, our results suggest that nobiletin improves adiposity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and prevents bone loss in OVX mice. Therefore, nobiletin is expected to have beneficial effects for the prevention and improvement of metabolic disorders and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

To investigate the characteristic radiologic findings of cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis (CMUSE) which can be differentiated from other similar bowel disease and to assess their clinical behavior. METHODSTwenty pathologically and clinically confirmed CMUSE patients (males:females = 8:12; mean age: 40.4 years) between March 2002 and August 2015 from seven academic centers in South Korea were retrospectively reviewed. We evaluated small bowel series (SBS; n = 25), computed tomography (CT) enterography (n = 21), magnetic resonance (MR) enterography (n = 2), and abdominopelvic CT (n = 18) images, focusing on enteric and perienteric manifestations. Any change in radiologic features during follow-up period was recorded. We evaluated clinical data including presenting symptoms, laboratory finding and presence of relapse from electronic medical records. Histopathologic findings were also evaluated. RESULTSThe main symptoms were abdominal pain (n = 12) and anemia (n = 10). All patients showed small bowel strictures (n = 52, mean: 2.6 per patient) on initial CT/MR, located in the ileum (n = 47) or jejunum (n = 5). Strictures showed short-length (mean: 10.44 mm) and circumferential bowel wall thickening (mean: 5.56 mm) with layered enhancement (n = 48) that were also noted on initial SBS (n = 36) with shallow ulcers (n = 10). Some ulcerative lesions or wall thickening progressed into strictures on follow-up SBS/CT, and some strictures revealed recurrent ulceration on follow-up SBS. There were no penetrating disease features like fistula or abscess and no gastrointestinal tract involvement except the small bowel. Nine patients experienced disease recurrence (median relapse-free period: 32 mo) even post-operatively. Histopathologic features of surgically resected specimens were characterized as multiple superficial ulcerations confined to mucosa or submucosa and multiple strictures. Objective:To investigate the anti-obesity activity and the action mechanism of the roots of Adenophora triphylla *** extract(ATE) in high-fat diet(HFD)-induced obese mice and 3T3-LI ***:The roots of Ademption triphylla were extracted with 70%*** demonstrate the compounds,linoleic acid was analyzed by using gas chromatography:and the anti-obesity effects and possible mechanisms of ATE were examined in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and HFD-induced obese ***:Treatment with ATE inhibited the lipid accumulation without cytotoxicity in 3T3-L1 ***,200 and 400 mg/kg ATE treatment significantly decreased the body weight gain,white adipose tissues(WATs) weight and plasma triglyceride level,while 100 and 200 mg/kg ATE treatment increased the plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level in the HFD-induced obese mice,as compared with the HFD *** with 200 and 400 mg/kg ATE also lowered the size of adipocytes in adipose tissue and reduced the lipid accumulation in *** treatment showed significantly lower expression level of adipogenesis-relatcd proteins,such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor y,fatty acid binding protein(aP2),fatty acid synthase in 3T3-L1 adipocytes;and furthermore,decreased peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor γ,aP2,fatty acid synthase,sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c,and lipoprotein lipase mRNA expression levels in WAT of the HFD-induced obese ***:These results suggested that the ATE has an anti-obesity effect,which may be elicited by regulating the expression of adipogenesis and lipogenesis-related genes and proteins in adipocytes and WAT of the HFD-induced obese mice.

Inorganic silica-titania thin films with thicknesses 150 nm-200 nm are deposited on high purity and polished silicon wafer and silica glass substrates by sol-gel dipping process and are patterned by capillary force lithography technique. Subsequently grating structure is embossed in green stage. The patterned gel films are subjected to stepwise heat treatment to 500 ℃ and above in pure oxygen atmosphere in order to achieve major conversion of mixed-gel to oxide optical films which are characterized by Ellipsometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） and atomic force microscopy （AFM） to optimize the fabrication parameters and to get perfectly matched film. Removal of organics and formation of perfectly inorganic silica-titania network at optimized heat treatment in controlled environment are ensured by FTIR spectral study. The difference in refractive indices between the substrate and coated film as developed waveguides for operating wavelength show the planar waveguide behavior of the films. calculated theoretically matches exactly with the （632.8 nm） and the measured optical properties

Despite many studies on land degradation in the Highlands of Northern Ethiopia, quantitative information regarding long-term changes in land use/cover(LUC) is rare. Hence, this study aims to investigate the LUC changes in the Geba catchment(5142 km2), Northern Ethiopia, over 80 years(1935–2014). Aerial photographs(APs) of the 1930 s and Google Earth(GE) images(2014) were used. The point-count technique was utilized by overlaying a grid on APs and GE images. The occurrence of cropland, forest, grassland, shrubland, bare land, built-up areas and water body was counted to compute their fractions. A multivariate adaptive regression spline was applied to identify the explanatory factors of LUC and to create fractional maps of LUC. The results indicate significant changes of most types, except for forest and cropland. In the 1930 s, shrubland(48%) was dominant, followed by cropland(39%). The fraction of cropland in 2014(42%) remained approximately the same as in the 1930 s, while shrubland significantly dropped to 37%. Forests shrank further from a meagre 6.3% in the 1930 s to 2.3% in 2014. High overall accuracies(93% and 83%) and strong Kappa coefficients(89% and 72%) for point counts and fractional maps respectively indicate the validity of the techniques used for LUC mapping.
