Clinical significance of CT-defined minimal ascites in patients with gastric cancer

AIM： To study the clinical significance of minimal ascites, which was only defined by the CT and whose nature was not determined preoperatively, in the relationship with the peritoneal carcinomatosis. METHODS： The medical records and the dynamic CT films of 118 patients with gastric cancer were reviewed. Factors associated with peritoneal carcinomatosis were analyzed in 40 patients who had CT-defined ascites of which the nature was surgically confirmed, RESULTS： Only 12.5-25% of the CT-defined minimal ascites, whose volume was estimated to be less than 50 mL, were associated with peritoneal carcinomatosis. When the estimated CT-defined ascitic volume was 50 mL or more, peritoneal carclnomatosis was identified in 75-100%. When CT-defined lymph node enlargements were not found beyond the regional gastric area, perigastric invasions were not suspected, and the size of tumor was less than 3 cm, peritoneal carcinomatosis seemed significantly less accompanied at the univariate analysis. However, except for the minimal volume of CT- defined ascites in comparison with the mild or more, other factors were not confirmed multivariately. CONCLUSION： In the patients with gastric cancer, CT- defined minimal ascites alone is rarely associated with peritoneal carcinomatosis, if it does not accompany other signs suggestive of malignant seeding. Therefore, consideration of active curative resection should not be hesitated, if CT-defined minimal ascites is the only delusive sign.

Small molecule peptides and their derivatives are an emerging class of supramolecular hydrogelators that have attracted rapidly growing interest in the fields of drug delivery and regenerative medicine due to their inherent biodegradability and biocompatibility, as well as versatility in molecular design and ease of synthesis. Built upon the directional, intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking, peptide-based molecular units can associate in aqueous solution into filamentous assemblies of various sizes and shapes. Under appropriate conditions, these filamentous assemblies can percolate into a 3D network with materials properties tailorable for specific biomedical applications. In this review, we survey the literature published over the past three years in the development of peptide-based hydrogelators for biomedical applications. We highlight several representative examples and center our discussion on the fundamentals of molecular design, assembly, and gelation conditions.

A portable skincare plasma-device with a rechargeable battery is presented here. The device comprises two pads made of thin polyimide film as the dielectric layer, namely, the dielectric barrier discharge pad(DBD-pad) for skin-touch and a capacitive ground-pad(G-pad) for hand holding. High AC voltage of approximately 1 kV with frequency of 40 kHz is induced in the DBD-pad that contacts the skin, which serves as the floating electrode, while low voltage is induced on the G-pad. Considering the requirement for impedance matching between the DBDpad capacitance and the inverter along with the need for low skin current less than approximately 5 mA for electrical safety, the electrode area of the DBD-pad is minimized to be smaller than that of the G-pad.

The(EDTA)^(4-)organic substituents were supplemented with alkaline silicates electrolyte,however in varying concentration to explore the microstructure,chemical composition and subsequent effects on the biodegradation of the PEO coated Mg AZ91 *** surface analysis-,carried out through SEM,samples with zero-(EDTA)^(4-)were found-,lacking pancake structural features;however,supplementing electrolyte with(EDTA)^(4-),bulky and layered pancakes were obtained with minimum cracks and minimum porosity for *** the phase and inner layer analysis,it was found that EDTA can significantly alter the surface layers composition and could act as a passivation agent-;however,individual polycrystalline phases were not found to *** hardness value obtained for EDT-1 was~909.69 HV,the highest value found here which occurs with the shallowest indents found in this ***-vitro degradation analysis was carried out using potentiodynamic polarization at room temperature,cyclic polarization at RT and high fever conditions(HFT~40°C).The corrosion potential for coated AZ91 was obtained as a positive value of~0.1 V,for the first time in the PEO research;however,the results were not supported by the cyclic polarization tests at room temperature and at *** post corrosion microstructural analysis confirmed the effective role of EDTA up to 1.0 g·L^(-1)and revealed the formation of thin films during the forward polarization at HFT.

We report the first recorded capture of a blue-banded sea snake（Laticauda laticaudata Linnaeus, 1758, Jobeuntti Kun Badabam in Korean） in South Korea based on one male specimen collected from Marado-ri, Seogwiposi, Jeju-do on 20 October 2016. The morphological features of the lateral nostrils, the much wider ventrals than adjacent dorsals, the horizontally undivided rostral, the two prefrontals, and the uniform black bands on the body indicate that the specimen is L. laticaudata. An analysis of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequence indicated that the specimen fits well into the known L. laticaudata phylogenetic group, which confirms that the sea krait is L. laticaudata. Including this report, five species of sea snakes（L. laticaudata, L. semifasciata, Hydrophis platurus, H. cyanocinctus, and H. melanocephalus） have now been reported in Korean waters.

In this paper, we study the behavior of the solution at the crack edges for a nearly circular crack with developing cusps subject to shear loading. The problem of finding the resulting force can be written in the form of a hypersingular integral equation. The equation is then trans-formed into a similar equation over a circular region using conformal mapping. The equation is solved numerically for the unknown coefficients, which will later be used in finding the stress intensity factors. The sliding and tearing mode stress intensity factors are evaluated for cracks and displayed graphically. Our results seem to agree with the existing asymptotic solution.

In this condition,recurrent febrile urinary tract infection can be a serious problem,and can easily cause renal damage due to relatively short ureters and high pressure in the *** To prevent urosepsis and preserve renal function,early diagnosis and proper management including surgical correction should be considered for the management of renal ectopia with VUR.

Objective:Mitophagy is known to contribute towards progression of Parkinson’s *** red ginseng(KRG)is a widely used medicinal herb in East Asia,and recent studies have reported that KRG prevents 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion(MPP^(+))-induced cell *** study was undertaken to investigate whether KRG suppresses MPP^(+)-induced apoptosis and ***:SH-SY5 Y cells were incubated with KRG for 24 h,and subsequently exposed to MPP^(+).The MPP^(+)-induced cell death was confirmed with the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay,and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated d UTP nick end-labeling *** in the structure and function of mitochondria were confirmed using mitotracker,Mito SOX red mitochondrial superoxide indicator,parkin,and phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten-induced putative kinase 1(PINK1)immunofluorescent *** blotting was performed to evaluate the expression of apoptosis-related factors in whole cells,including Bax,Bcl-2 and cleaved caspase-3,and mitophagy-related factors in the mitochondrial fraction,including cytochrome c,parkin,PINK1,translocase of the outer membrane 20(TOM20),p62 and Beclin ***:MPP^(+)induced cell death by cytochrome c release and caspase-3 activation;however,this effect was suppressed by KRG’s regulation of the expressions of Bcl-2 and ***,MPP^(+)exposure increased the mitochondrial expressions of parkin,PINK1,Beclin 1 and p62,and decreased TOM20,cytochrome c and Bcl-2 *** MPP^(+)-induced changes in the mitochondrial fraction were attenuated by treatment with ***:KRG effectively prevents MPP^(+)-induced SH-SY5 Y cell death by regulating cytochrome c release from mitochondria and PINK1/parkin-mediated mitophagy,through regulation of the Bcl-2 family.
