Chitosan-praseodymium complex for adsorption of fluoride ions from water

Engineering of chitosan by praseodymium has been investigated to improve the adsorption properties as well as physical characteristics of chitosan. Modification of chitosan changes the original properties of chitosan so that it can be more suitable for adsorption of fluoride ions. In this study, chitosan-praseodymium （Chi-Pr） was synthesized by impregnation method. The Chi-Pr complex was characterized by scanning electron microscopic-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （sEM-EDX）, Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） and employed as an adsorbent for removal of fluorides ions from water in the batch system. The variables such as contact time, concentration of Pr, adsorbent dose, initial concentration of fluoride ions, and competitor anions were studied. The adsorption efficiency of fluoride ions （n） with increasing Pr loading into chitosan （5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.%, 20 wt.% and 25 wt.%） were 35.5%, 56.1%, 72.0%, 68.5% and 62.5%, respectively. The Chi-Pr （15 wt.%） complex had the highest fluoride removal efficiency （72.0%）. The experimental data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacity （qmax） of 15.87 mg/g and an equilibrium constant （kL） of 0.15 mg. Kinetic study revealed that the adsorption of fluoride ions from water followed pseudo-second-order model with a maximum adsorption capacity （q2） of 8.20 mg/g and a rate constant （k2） of 0.01 g/***. Adsorption efficiency of fluoride ions in the simulated drinking water was diminished with the changes in pH levels. The presence of Pr3＋ in chitosan increased chitosan＇s performance as an adsorbent for adsorption of fluoride ions.

Terbium-picrate triethylene glycol（EO3-Tb-Pic） complex was prepared in thin film and single layer device structure of ITO/EO3-Tb-Pic/Al, using spin coating technique. The UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy analysis was performed to evaluate the electronic molecular transition of the complex. The optical band gap, Eg estimated from the Tauc model revealed that EO3-Tb-Pic thin film exhibited a direct transition with Eg of 2.70 eV. The electronic parameters of the ITO/EO3-Tb-Pic/Al device such as the ideality factor n, barrier height Φb, saturation current Io, and series resistance Rs, were extracted from the conventional lnI-V, Cheung＇s functions and Norde＇s method. It was found that the evaluated parameters calculated from Norde＇s and Cheung＇s methods were consistent with those calculated from the conventional I-V method. In the double logarithmic I-V plot, three distinct regions based on the slope were identified, and the conduction mechanisms were discussed and explained. The mobility, μ value was estimated from sCLC region as 2.58×10^–7 cm2/（V·s）. This newly obtained lanthanide complex may be potentially utilized in electronic devices.

Lymph node status is considered a key prognostic and predictive factor in patients with gastric cancer(GC).Although there is a practical approach to the intraoperative detection of sentinel lymph nodes(sLNs),such a procedure is not included in the European surgical *** this report,we present a practical approach to sLN mapping in a representative case with early gastric cancer(EGC).A 74-year-old female was hospitalized with an endoscopically observed,superficially ulcerated tumor located in the antral *** gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy and sLN mapping was performed by injecting methylene blue dye into the peritumoral submucosal *** incidentally detected blue-stained lymph node located along the middle colic artery was also *** was detected 40 min after injection of the methylene *** examination showed a p T1b-staged well-differentiated HER-2-negative *** of the 41 LNs located at the first,third,and fifth station of the regional LN compartments were found to be free of tumor *** only lymph node with metastasis was located along the middle colicartery and was considered a non-regional lymph *** incidentally identified skip metastasis indicated stage Ⅳ GC.A classic chemotherapy regimen was given,and no recurrences were observed six months after *** this representative case,low-cost sLN mapping,with a longer intraoperative waiting time,totally changed the stage of the tumor in a patient with EGC.

Mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma(MANEC) is a rare tumor of the gastrointestinal tract that consists of a dual adenocarcinomatous and neuroendocrine differentiation, each component representing at least 30% of the tumor. To date, only seven cases have been reported in the cecum, and less than 40 in the stomach. Our first case was diagnosed in a 74-years-old female as a polypoid lesion of the cecum with direct invasion in the transverse colon, without lymph node metastases. The second case was diagnosed in the stomach of a 46-years-old male as a polypoid tumor of the antral region that invaded the pancreas and presented metastases in 22 regional lymph nodes. The metastatic tissue was represented by the glandular component. In both cases, the tumor consisted of a moderately-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma(with mucinous component in Case 1) intermingled with neuroendocrine carcinoma. Ki67 index was lower than 20% in Case 1, respectively higher than 20% in Case 2. The neuroendocrine component was marked by synaptophysin and neuron specific enolase, being negative for Keratins 7/20. The neuroendocrine component represented 60% in Case 1, and 40% in Case 2, respectively. The glandular components were marked by carcinoembryonic antigen, maspin and keratin 20/7(Case 1/2). Both cases were proved to be microsatellite stable. Independently by the localization and tumor stage, MANECs appear to be highly malignant tumors, with high risk for distant metastases. The aggressiveness seems to depend on the endocrine component, independent of its proportion. The neuroendocrine component could be a dedifferentiated adenocarcinoma with a neuroendocrine phenotype.

Raintree (samanea saman) is a multipurpose village tree species grown in abundance at southern and northern regions of Bangladesh. Village people need to know estimation procedure for timber inventory of this useful tree species. Data on diameter at breast height (diameter) and total height (height) of 205 standing sample trees were collected by spiegel relascope for the purpose. The sample trees with diameter ranging 21 cm - 91 cm and height ranging 10 m - 20 m were considered for measurement. Volumes (m3) of individual trees were computed by smalian formula. A total of 10 linear models of volume on diameter and volume (V) on diameter (D) and height (H) were examined with the sample trees. A few statistics of F, t, mean square error, multiple correlation coefficient and Furnivall Index was computed and tested for investigation of best fitted models. The two models of In(V) = 8.3023 + 2.1746 In(D) and In(V) = –9.1864 + 1.85502 In(D) + 0.8234 In(H) were found to be best fitted models. They have been recommended to estimate volume of large scale standing Raintree trees.

The aim of this study was to identify the most frequent yeasts in the oral cavity of adult individuals without immune disorders and to associate the presence of these oral yeasts with different characteristics of each individual. Oral rinse samples were obtained from 96 healthy adults and cultured in sabouraud dextrose agar media and CHROMagar. Yeasts were identified by sequencing the D1/D2 region of the 28 s rRNA gene. Probable association among the socio-demographic characteristics, body mass index, family and personal medical history,oral hygiene, tobacco and/or alcohol consumption habits and presence of oral fungi was analyzed. Contingency tables and logistic regression were employed to evaluate possible relationships between the presence of oral fungi and mixed colonization with these variables. 57.3% of the healthy individuals had oral yeasts and 21.8% had mixed colonization. The most prevalent yeasts were Candida albicans(52%), C. parapsilosis(17.9%), and ***(7.57%). Yeasts with most frequently mixed colonization were C. albicans and C. parapsilosis. No relationships were found among the variables analyzed. However, the presence of mixed colonization was related to the presence of dental prostheses(Pses(P=0.016) and O’Leary index(P=0.012). This is the first study that characterized oral yeasts in Colombian healthy individuals, determined the most prevalent oral yeasts C. albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. dublinensis and an association of mixed colonization with the use of dental prostheses and aparatology and poor hygiene.
