Background Danshen （Radix Salvia miltiorrhizae） has been used as a traditional medicine in Asia for treatment of various microcirculatory disturbance related diseases. Tanshinones are mainly hydrophobic active components, which have been isolated from Danshen and show various biological functions. In this study, we observed the neuroprotective effect of tanshinone I （Tsl） against ischemic damage in the gerbil hippocampal CA1 region （CA1） after transient cerebral ischemia and examined its neuroprotective mechanism. Methods The gerbils were divided into vehicle-treated-sham-group, vehicle-treated-ischemia-group, Tsl-treated-sham- group, and Tsl-treated-ischemia-group. Tsl was administrated intraperitoneally three times （once a day for three days） before ischemia-reperfusion. The neuroprotective affect of Tsl was examined using H＆E staining, neuronal nuclei （NeuN） immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B staining. To investigate the neuroprotective mechanism of Tsl after ischemia- reperfusion, immunohistochemical （IHC） and Western blotting analyses for Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase （SOD1）, Mn- superoxide dismutase （SOD2）, brain-derived neurotrophic factor （BDNF） and insulin-like growth factor-I （IGF-I） were *** Treatment with Tsl protected pyramidal neurons from ischemia-induced neuronal death in the CA1 after ischemia-reperfusion. In addition, treatment with Tsl maintained the levels of SOD1 and SOD2 as determined by IHC and Western blotting in the CA1 after ischemia- reperfusion compared with the vehicle-ischemia-group. Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for bladder cancer (BC). Sulfotransferase 1A1 (SULT1A1), a phase II enzyme, plays an important role in the metabolism of several carcinogens contained in cigarettes. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between SULT1A1 G638A polymorphism, cigarette smoking and bladder cancer risk in Taiwan. A total of 150 BC patients and 150 cancer-free controls were recruited from February 2002 to February 2009. Genotyping of the SULT1A1 G638A polymerphism was determined using the polymerase chain reaction-restricted fragment length polymorphism (PCR- RFLP) method. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated as a measure of the combined effect of cigarette smoking and the SULT1A1 G638A polymorphism on BC risk. In the present study, we found that study subjects with the G/G genotype of the SULT1A1 gene had a significantly higher BC risk of 1.7 (95% CI = 1.3 - 3.2) compared with those carrying the combination of G/A and A/A genotypes. Moreover, ever smokers who carried the G/G genotype of the SULT1A1 gene had a significantly increased UC risk of 3.5 (95% CI = 2.5 - 10.2) compared with never smokers who carried the G/A and A/A genotypes as the reference group. In conclusion, our findings suggest that SULT1A1 G638A polymorphism is associated with the development of BC, especially among cigarette smokers.

黄瓜疫病菌的培养性状、寄主范围及大部分形态与瓜疫霉(Phytophthora melonis Kat-?ura)基本一致。但病菌的菌丝有明显的肿胀及瘤状结节,新孢子囊是以层出方式产生的。黄瓜疫霉菌侵染植株后,镰刀菌及细菌可乘虚而入,进行第二次侵染,加重病势。接种后遇高温,病害迅速发展。抗病性测定说明在广州地区栽培面积较大的夏、秋黄瓜品种中,尚无高抗品种,以“夏青2号”及“秋青10号”抗病性稍强。盆栽试验证明:65％敌克松(吉林产)1000倍液防效显著,以播种前土壤施药与生长期喷药相结合的方法最好。敌克松200ppm完全抑制体外病原菌的生长,即使还能形成孢子囊,数量也极少。这些试验结果为田间防治试验提供了依据。

Incidence and Clinical Characteristics of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) after Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) with DVT Chemoprophylaxis

Objective: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is very common and leading cause of death due to this procedure. The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence and clinical characteristics of DVT after TKA with DVT chemoprophylaxis. Methods: This is a prospective cohort study in single institution. The patients received postoperative DVT chemoprophylaxis (low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) or Fondaparinux), followed by duplex ultrasonography to check for DVT 1 - 2 weeks after TKA. The clinical characteristics were summarized and analysed by chi-square test and regression analysis. Results: Five hundred and thirty four patients were enrolled from January 2007 to December 2010. DVT chemoprophylaxis was administered in 524 (98.1%) of the 534 patients. DVT occurred in 9 subjects (1.69%);8 subjects had DVT in the leg, and 1 subject had a pulmonary embolism. Among them, asymptomatic DVT was observed in 5 patients (0.94%). Univariate analysis showed that surgical methods (revision, P = 0.0007), body mass index (BMI) (>25, P = 0.0028), low platelet count (less than 150 × 103, P = 0.0219), time in the intensive care unit (ICU) (P < 0.0001), no administration of prophylactic LMWH (P = 0.0392), and a history of DVT (P < 0.0001) were significant risk factors of DVT. Conclusions: The incidence of DVT was 1.69% after TKA with prophylactic antithrombotic therapy. Revision surgery, BMI, low platelet count, time in ICU, absence of prophylactic LMWH and history of DVT were significant risk factors of DVT.

Background： Glehnia littoralis has been used for traditional Asian medicine, which has diverse therapeutic activities. However, studies regarding neurogenic effects of G. littoralis have not yet been considered. Therefore, in this study, we examined effects of G. littoralis extract on cell proliferation, neuroblast differentiation, and the maturation of newborn neurons in the hippocampus of adult mice. Methods： A total of 39 male ICR mice （12 weeks old） were randomly assigned to vehicle-treated and 100 and 200 mg/kg G. littoralis extract-treated groups （n = 13 in each group）. Vehicle and G. littoralis extract were orally administrated for 28 days. To examine neurogenic effects ofG. litmralis extract, we performed immunohistochemistry tbr 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine （BrdU, an indicator for cell proliferation） and doublecortin （DCX, an immature neuronal marker） and double immunofluorescence staining for BrdU and neuronal nuclear antigen （NeuN, a mature neuronal marker）. In addition, we examined expressional changes of brain-derived neurotrophic factor （BDNF） and its major receptor tropomyosin-related kinase B （TrkB） using Western blotting analysis. Results： Treatment with 200 mg/kg, not 100 mg/kg, significantly increased number of BrdU-immunoreactive （＋） and DCX＋ cells （48.0 ±3.1and 72.0 ± 3.8 cells/section, respectively） in the subgranular zone （SGZ） of the dentate gyrus （DG） and BrdU＊/NeuN＋ cells （17.0 ±1.5 cells/section） in the granule cell layer as well as in the SGZ. In addition, protein levels of BDNF and YrkB （about 232% and 244% of the vehicle-treated group, respectively） were significantly increased in the DG of the mice treated with 200 mg/kg ofG. littoralis extract. Conclusion： G. littoralis extract promots cell proliferation, neuroblast differentiation, and neuronal maturation in the hippocampal DG, and neurogenic effects might be closely related to increases ofBDN F and TrkB proteins by G. littoralis extract treatment.

Quercetin（QE; 3,5,7,3′,4′-pentahydroxyflavone）, a well-known flavonoid, has been shown to prevent against neurodegenerative disorders and ischemic insults. However, few studies are reported regarding the neuroprotective mechanisms of QE after ischemic insults. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of QE on ischemic injury and the expression of antioxidant enzymes in the hippocampal CA1 region of gerbils subjected to 5 minutes of transient cerebral ischemia. QE was pre-treated once daily for 15 days before ischemia. Pretreatment with QE protected hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons from ischemic injury, which was confirmed by neuronal nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence staining. In addition, pretreatment with QE significantly increased the expression levels of endogenous antioxidant enzymes Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, Mn superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons of animals with ischemic injury. These findings demonstrate that pretreated QE displayed strong neuroprotective effects against transient cerebral ischemia by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes.
