The objective of this project was to search for consensus in differential gene expression data and in regulation of differentially expressed genes among DNA microarray studies of atherosclerotic vessels and plaque. Seventeen DNA microarray studies of atherosclerosis were analyzed. Only 19 genes were found to be differentially expressed in 3 or more of the studies. The nineteen genes belong to classic gene ontologies known to be involved in atherosclerosis: immunity and defense, metabolism, proteases, receptors, and signal transduction. Four bioinformatics programs (TRED, rVISTA, JASPAR, and Ariadne Pathways) were used to further analyze the promoter regions and common upstream regulators of the 19 genes. Twelve of the genes shared nine common upstream regulators, many of them known to affect atherosclerosis, and one possible new pathway was identified that may be involved in this disease.

Objectives: This study evaluated the association between weight loss and change in depression among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2Dm). methods: Weight change from 2008 to 2009 among respondents (with and without T2Dm) in the Study to Help Improve Early evaluation and management of risk factors Leading to Diabetes (SHIELD) was calculated. Change in depression was calculated as change from 2008 to 2009 in Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores. Respondents with weight loss (>1%, >3%, >5%) were compared with respondents with weight gain (≥1%). multivariate regression adjusted for baseline characteristics. Results: Among those with T2Dm, more respondents with weight loss (n = 779) improved their depression scores, compared with respondents with weight gain (n = 731): 32.9%, 36.9%, 39.8% for >1%, >3%, and >5% weight loss, respectively, vs. 28.7% for weight gain (pmore respondents with weight loss improved the severity level of depression compared with respondents with weight gain (p ment, T2Dm respondents with weight loss had significantly greater improvement in depression scores (p mes higher odds of improving depression severity than T2Dm respondents with weight gain (OR: 2.22 for >1%, 2.96 for >3%, and 3.31 for >5% weight loss, p milar improvement in depression scores and severity of depression related to weight loss was observed among all SHIELD respondents (with and without T2Dm). Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate an association between weight loss and improvement in depression over a 1-year period in adults with T2Dm, and suggest the need for further investigation with respect to causality.

Assessment of Underwater Anthropogenic Noise Associated with Construction Activities in Bechers Bay, Santa Rosa Island, California

Acoustic monitoring and mitigation of underwater construction noise was conducted during marine pier demolition and reconstruction activities near Santa Rosa Island, California. Activities spanned two construction seasons and used both auger and pneumatic percussion drilling methods for pile placement. Pile drilling activities during construction resulted in sound pressure levels (SPL) ranging from 121.0 to 184.5 dB re 1 μPa. No significant difference was found for calculated source SPLs between the Season 1 and Season 2 methods of pile drilling (KW = 2.28, p = 0.15). Additionally, no significant difference was found for calculated source SPLs during active drilling between the Season 1 and Season 2 methods of pile drilling (KW = 3.39, p = 0.07). The average calculated source SPL documented during this study was lower than the NOAA Fisheries mandated safety zone threshold (160.0 dB re 1 μPa [rms]) for harassment to marine mammals. This is the first known report of SPL data collected in concert with marine pile drilling via the auger drilling technique. The results from this study can be used to improve information for and assist with the development of regulatory policies and techniques regarding sound level thresholds and mitigation monitoring.

Elemental Analysis of Soil Phosphorus Neighborhoods Using SEm, Spectral mapping and GIS

The utility of GIS (geographic information system) methods and spatial statistical analysis on spectral maps of sediment samples were examined. Detailed elemental maps are often constructed using energy dispersive X-ray techniques and SEm (scanning electron microscopy). The elemental neighborhood associations of a single element, P (phosphorus), were quantified at a magnification of 3,000 ×. For each of the 170,000 pixels on the images which displayed a strong P concentration, neighborhoods from 0.1μm2 to 12 μm2 were examined for associated elemental concentrations. PCA (principal component analysis) revealed two significant neighborhood types associated with P in samples of pH 4, and three neighborhood types at pH 8. These neighborhoods corresponded to mg-P associations commonly found to be chemically prevalent in river sediments impacted by agricultural operations. Discriminant analysis showed that the greatest accuracy in predicting sample pH could be achieved by using a neighborhood size of 12 μm2. Potassium at relatively large neighborhood sizes was the element most significant in predicting pH. While many of the chemical associations in close proximity to P could be predicted and explained through mineral solubility, spatial analysis provided some interesting insights into the structure of the samples. Results also indicted differences in the spatial scale associated with different processes.
